when you find out...let me know. ..Heart has become a barker too...especially when I walk to the door to let them out..She will jump at the door and bark that higher pitched, "I'm first...I'm first...don't you try to get ahead of me!!!" bark.... |

Me too!! All the above and when I get her lead out, and when we get to the park, and when she sees anyone or anything running and when Rastus is too tired to play any more. All my previous dogs have been quiet and so is Rastus so its come as quite a shock to have someone who is so vocal. And the high pitched bark is painfully deafening. PS distraction does work with Tiggy especially if its with something for her to hold in her mouth, she cant bark with a mouth full. Problem is when she's barking its usually impossible to distract her. |
When I first adopted Violet through the rescue, she was 9 mts old and never barked. I thought, woo hoo, a non barking dog. Violet did not bark for a really long time, I don't remember when she started to bark, but I think after she turned 2 years old and she hasn't stopped since. I guess she just didn't have anything to say, but she has definatly made up for it in the last few years. She will even bark with food in her mouth, which is rude, and could cause choking, which I do point out to her when she does it. Violet's high pitched bark is the worst.
Susie, welcome to our world of barking OES. lol |
I've only had 1 that is what I'd call a barker. My dogs will bark when you expect them to. Like when they see something moving outside in the yard. Or when they are in the dog run & know I am in getting their food ready. Or when I come into the kennel the first time in the morning. Melody is what I called a "nuisance" barker. She didn't bark non-stop but she barked when it really wasn't necessary! Like to let you know she had finished her last kibble or to let you know you weren't close enough to her. We used to have a standing joke about her barking. When outside, if she was in the dog run & could see me, as long as I was standing up she was quiet. As soon as my butt hit a chair she barked. We figured out that when standing she had a 50/50 chance I'd go towards her & we'd do something. Butt in chair meant "no chance"! I will say of all the OES I have ever had, she was definitely the smartest. I mean way smarter. Everyone commented on how smart she was. We figured out at one point that she had a vocabulary of over 30 words. In obedience she'd do the command the judge called out before I'd make the move to do the command! The hardest thing for her to do in obedience was "be quiet" during the long down! She never NQ'd because of it but she lost points because she just had to let that one little whine out to let me know a dog down the line had moved a 1/4"! Longest 3 minutes of my life! So there just might be some connection between intelligence & the barking. But it sure would be nice if they could understand that we prefer the "quiet" to the "bark, bark, bark"! |
Obe is very vocal when he wants to be. Such times include, anything that moves outside. Moved the furniture away from windows so he could not see out. Helped, now it's just when he is outside. Anytime he gets excited (easily done) I get the high pitched loud OES play bark. Best one, I go out night before, want to sleep in (head hurts) Woof Woof, will get your head ringing. Along with a thumping now. Thank you son, I take it you want to eat or out to potty. Or when he wants something and I ignore him, he barks to get my attention. This is after he makes those whimpering sounds.
When does he not bark. Someone knocks on the door, never not once. But his butt starts to wiggle. He just looks at it as someone is here and I get attention. UPS, Fed Ex, he tries his best to help them carry the packages, if outside. His way of asking for treats. The garbage man he sits and watches, big truck makes a lot of noise. I watched him bark at one person (mean bark) and he was not letting whoever it was near the yard. Must have sensed something with the person. Needless to say the man turned and walked back the way he came. He did not live on the private road so he had no reason to be there. Good boy Obe. Right now he is chasing squirrels from tree to tree barking. In my honest opinion I dont believe Obe has mean bone in his body. I think if I was in trouble, someone hurting me, breaks into the house, etc. This would change his tone and become protective of me. |
