Hi, and welcome to the forum. Thank you for saving the poor girl. It sounds like she just needs time, spend as much time as you can with her, lots of love and gently earn her trust. You can encourage her to eat by putting smelly things on her food, like a little parmesan cheese.
Where are you located?
Welcome. Thanks for adopting this dog! With time and patience, I'm sure she'll be a wonderful family member! Although you may be right - this dog may have been abused - dogs can act like this even if they weren't physically abused - she may just have been neglected (or have been timid all along).

NEOESR has a great article about "How to Have a Great REscue Dog"

http://www.neoesr.org/kesner.htm

You need to only use positive reinforcement. Take your time and let her settle in and take things at her own pace. Don't force her - and don't overwhelm her with large gatherings, parties, or company.

Hope this article is helpful. Please keep us posted as to your progress!

I had the same thing happen when I rescued my first dog..a toy poodle.
He hid under my cabinets in my kitchen for most of the first week he was with me. By the second week he was running around the house and chasing the cats... Give her some time to adjust and I'm sure she'll be fine
Good Luck!!

Cooper wouldn't eat hardly anything at all when we first brought him home, and he came from a family who loved him dearly and I know spoiled him rotten! It took a few days for him to adjust to the new surroundings, and a little time for me to figure out an eating routine that he was comfortable with. Give your new baby a little time and love, she'll be just fine!
Welcome to the forum imiubu, and thanks for rescuing a dog!!

When our Sofa got home, she was very timid and did not eat well for about 2 or 3 weeks. All she did was stay curled on a couch. It will take some time for your new dog to adapt to your house, so you need to provide a positive environment for her. Encourage her to play and offer her yummy food to encourage her to eat. Calling the shelter to find out what she ate would help a lot, because OES's have sensitive stomach and a sudden change in their diet could result in loose stool.

Be patient, your doggie will feel more confident as you interact with her and she realizes she won't be neglected or abused at your house, and soon you'll wonder why you adopted her... (hahaha, just kidding!) Once their playful personality starts to bubble, you'll fall in love even more with her.

Don't forget to ask any question you have, there's great people here with great advise for all kinds of problems, and post some pictures soon, we love to see dogs!

Congratulations and good luck with your new friend for life!
imiubu - congratulations on adopting an OES. We adopted a little girl pup (Abby) last Fall and it took her about 2 months for her to come out of her shell but now we can't pull her off of Farley. They play *all* the time. :) Good luck. [/url]
Hi!

Give her time to adjust and trust you. She won't starve herself. When we got Casey as a pup it took her a day or two to adjust to where she was. Treat her as if she was a pup. Give her some space and be aware that she is observing the heirarchy in the house as well. Let her join in as she feels comfortable. Thank you for rescuing her! Good luck and keep us informed!
