Coccyx Calamity!

Forlorn webmaster seeks better medical team that all of the King's Horses and Men!

Christmas morning Joan went to the hotel lobby to pick up a bit of the continental breakfast. When she returned, all I heard was a key in the door and I got concerned it was housekeeping so I wanted to get to the door in a hurry to see who it was.

As I approached the door and put the brakes on, I guess I found out how that door could be so shiny! My feet went straight out from under me, my big toe slammed into the bottom of the door, my backside landed on the ground, all before I realized I was falling! It was sooooo fast!

So my toe which now bears a scab from the torn flesh feels fine, but my butt is hurting! No bruising at all, and it only hurts when I'm sitting on it, so I'm thinking I've hurt my coccyx. It doesn't hurt much at all, but the pain has been increasing just a little butt.

So the question I have is... how is an injured coccyx treated? Is it just one of those things generally left untreated like a rib or a toe? I can't imagine any kind of a cast! :D : D :D   (Unless it's made by Dunkin' Donuts, I won't be sitting on any doughnuts.)

I have no idea what the official treatment is, but I've been in the exact same position (no pun intended) that you were, twice.

Both involved icy stairs in the backyard that I fell down TWICE, about eight months or so apart. I landed right on my tailbone. It didn't hurt that much at the time, but I was a little stiff, and the ache kicked in the next day. It was painful for a week or so, but calmed down after that with no ill effects.

The second time I fell I hit my tailbone, slipped down one more step, landed hard and hit the middle of my back, slipped down to the last step, and this time hit my back on the middle step and right where my head and neck meet on the top step. Ouch ouch and ouch.

I probably should have sought medical attention but I didn't. I took a few leftover T3s for the pain, and was stiff for about a week, but recovered fully. I don't think there's much they can do.

You could probably sit on some frozen peas to get any swelling/bruising down. I have no idea if I had any bruising/swelling. I couldn't really see it myself, and refused to let my husband check. I couldn't believe that I'd fallen down the same three steps TWICE.

Good luck to you. If there is a treatment that you find out about, please let me know. I imagine I'll manage to fall down those stairs again in the not so distant future.

I hope you feel better soon. Pain meds are a glorious thing, if you've got any kicking around....I'm just saying.
You gotta get one of those donuts to sit on.
Ron what a bummer :rimshot:
Hopefully its only bruising. Here in Aus you can get a blow up donut cushion to sit on while the bruising subsides from the pharmacy.

Otherwise get two small towels and roll them into sausages a couple of inches thick then position them on your chair horizontal to each other and long ways from back to front of the chair.
Then the trickey part, wiggle them around so they're just far enough apart that you can plonk your sit bones on them and keep your poor coccyx off the chair. The cushion's an easier option if you can get one.

Good luck :D
You can use the donut - test it out and see. Just remember - donuts are contradicted for hemorroids, so if you have them, you may need to decide the lesser evil.......

To answer your question - no, going to the doctor won't get you more than maybe some pain pills. There is no real treatment other than time. Ibuprofen would be helpful = reducing swelling and pain.

Good luck - I have been there as well. Thankfully mine was as a teen - we bounce better then.
AWWW poor Ronnie!!!!!! Remember I did the same last year when i fell backward over little hattie!! And landed on my butt!! wow did it hurt!!! I was due to go on hols too. in a few days. Every time i tried to sit or lie down Ouch!!!!!! It does get better but it will take time!!!!!!! :)
OUCH!!

Hubby had same issue with his butt bone... except his injury was from playing soccer and got kicked full force in the tailbone. (He was goalie... slid to grab the ball and was laying on ground covering it when other player ran up and *POW*)

His treatment, for we DID go to doctor... was to take his pain meds/anti inflammatory, and sit on the 'ahem' ... DONUT. Took a while but it eventually went away.

SIDE NOTE: I mentiond this to hubby and Scott says to go sit on the toliet. Eventually your legs will fall asleep and you will forget all about your buttbone.
I think that this is karma for being such a pain in all of our butts all these years!!
Ouch!!! Hope you heal up fast!
I guess this means youre a pain in the butt.... 8)

i hope you rectify the situation :rimshot:
Sorry to hear this Ron. Hope you get to feeling better. I tried using one of those donuts due to a shattered pelvic, but could not do so b/c of stitches.

Rectum, hell, killed 'em! (I've been waiting YEARS to use that line!).

Time will heal the coccyx. A lot of time. I fell going down the stairs and bumped my butt down the whole flight. It took at least 3 months for the pain to go away.
The pain in my butt is still there. On a related note, I don't think Joan will be taking a business trip anytime soon.
OMG you broke your A#@ ! So sorry. My mom broke hers once (had xrays ) time will heal it but it takes a while Advil if you can take it. What a way to bring in the New Year 8O
Been there, done that
It stays sore for quite a while. When it was fresh I used ice, then after a while ( 2-3 days ) switched to heat which seemed to help. Other than the previous suggestions that's about all you can do.
If the pain is unbearable with the OTC meds then see your Dr. for a Rx that will help. Don't grin and it bare it ( sorry could'nt resist ) :)
With my bad back, I cringed reading this. Seems like every time I fall I end up in the hospital with another disk surgery.

You can alternate heat and cold - cold always works better for me. Don't let it go too long if the pain doesn't go away. Get an MRI done to see if you didn't crush or compress a disk.
