Jumping on kids only

My husband and I have a lovely, very active and people loving 11 month OES named Sunny.

We've trained her to not jump up on people anymore, but it's only working on BIG people. Every time she comes close to our 3 year old niece (or any little kid), no matter what the circumstance is, she does a little "hop" to try to get to our niece's face. Sunny has never shown aggression to us, even in play, so I know she' s not trying to bite or anything, probably just a little lick or sniff, but in the process, she's knocked our niece over once and now she's terrified of Sunny. And with good cause, Sunny is almost as tall as our niece. Our niece is a good sport and wants to play with Sunny, but each time they're together, the first few attempts result in "hops" from Sunny, so our niece gets pretty skittish and we end up having to quarantine the two of them.

I just don't know what to do, because she gets it with adults, it's just little kids that she does this with. It's almost as if she's playing with them like she would another dog, sniffing and licking their face, bouncing up and down, putting a paw up etc. And the way(s) we taught Sunny to not jump up can't be carried out when she's jumping up on a three year old, we can't tell our niece how to react, she's just a toddler.

So how do we train Sunny that kids arn't dogs that walk on their hind legs?

Your help would be so appreciated, as Sunny is becoming less and less welcome at family gatherings :(

Thanks!

we have this problem with Summer. I think it stems back to her puppyhood the house she came from had 3 little kids and they used to carry the pups around. When Summer even hears a child she gets so excited, but as you say her size is against her. I was watching my yorkie with my grand kids and she does exactly the same but as she is under 10lbs it doesnt have the same implications.
Perhaps someone can come up with a suggestion.
It sounds like perfectly normal sheepie behaviour. She just knows the children will not tell her off/ discipline her like the adults will.

I'm no expert but this might help..

Is your niece at all scared? Also how old is she? If she is not scared and is old enough, it would be a good idea to 'play a game' with your niece and the pup, have your niece enter the house with a treat. When the pup jumps, your niece is to either turn away from the dog, or leave the house immediately. The pup will learn she gets no attention from jumping. You can do this with the pup on a leash, when she jumps, pull her back and give a sharp "NO". When your nice comes back in the house, do the same again and again until you can get the pup to sit. When the pup sits, your niece gives praise and the treat. Back out the door and continue the game until your niece can come in, get the pup to sit, and treat/ praise. It's important for her to be calm. I guess it should take about 20 minutes for it to work. You might want to take a few hours break then try again just to reinforce.
Most likely your dog has been trained "off" using adults. I would suggest training "off" using several different ages & sizes of young children. Instruct the children what to do beforehand & what to expect from the dog so they don't exhibit too much "fear" as the dog can pick up on this immediatiely. Also, make sure the little ones are not moving fast either towards or away from the dog. This just brings out the herding instinct in them which in their mind is a light bulb that goes on & says "need to round up & confine the numbers".
