Nope, it was the $2.50 charge for an online dating service that was charged at 1:30 in the am, the $1.00 from a bar in St Kitts, plus a bunch of other little charges in the last couple of days for very small amounts like that. So it turns out that the scammers just plug in the 16 numbers into their systems and just use the card numbers that work. Anyhow, check your statements!! This seems like a regular thing happening now and it's easy for them to slide in right before Christmas. Luckily the credit card company said I would be fully credited the charges which surprised me because I thought they had a $50 minimum. I guess they realize that this is their problem vs. someone having their card physically stolen.. |

Watch all your other cards, and it's more likely that your card was either electronically swiped at a restaurant or some other place where it went out of your sight for a little bit, sometime in the last 6 months, or some merchant's system got hacked.
I hope they isolated it! Good luck! |
We had the same thing happen with our debit card..
we had to switch banks Hope you can get it resolved! |
When talking to the credit card company, they pretty much said that the numbers were configured randomly vs. someone actually stealing the info while it was in my possession. Whether they are telling me the truth or not, who knows.
Luckily, we really only use this one credit card #, but it is good to constantly be checking the statements... Verve |
Well, it may or may not be true in your case, but 4.2 million cards stolen from Hannaford (one of ours included), 45.7 million cards were hacked out of TJ Max (yup, we shopped there) and our Discover Card was swiped complete with the three digit cvv code.
One card of ours was actually part of a screw up by the Boston Globe where they had printed out all of their accounts' info including card numbers, and then put it into their recycle bin. Then as was their normal policy, someone used paper out of the recycle bin to wrap newspapers into bundles in specific counts to go to stores and newsstands. It happens all the time, and the banks contact us to replace a card. They NEVER tell you that your card was compromised by XYZ merchant, but we can put 2 and 2 together with the news reports. |
So Sorry....
I got hit too...a credit card I have never used!!!! Fraud Dept called me..there was alot of online charging AND a $1.00 cash advance from a town in Italy!!!! Italy of all places!! The service rep. asked me if I had been out of the country...????!!!!!!! Gosh I hadn't even been out of the city!!! WATCH your cards!!!! everyone!!! Glad they caught it.... |
The exact same thing happened to my mom too as you Sheepieshake. She confirmed that no it wasn't her in Italy and besides she doesn't drive and it was a card she hadn't used yet. Seems like scammers are fiquring small amounts like that will go unnoticed but quess with a few complaint - the fraud dept is probably now on alert for small amounts that show up on cards.
Glad you were able to clear it up Verve Up. Marianne |
We had our Debit card used but again the bank caught it right away.
They stopped the card and we got a new # card. They seem to be on top of this thing, But i keep check on it everyday. |
when we got back from the uk in september there was over $2000 is charges on our account from gas station in georgia and bank charges from overdrawing our account the bank sorted it out quickly and gve us the money and the charges back with in a week but we wher enot happy
when they asked us where we had bee nwe were like you want to see you passports its got out in and out stamps in !!!! zoe and einy |
I'm glad you got credited the money back. That has always scared me, and I feel uncomfortable any time I make an online purchase ...in fear of the site being hacked into or whatever. |
My husband has gotten into the habit of checking our bank acct and credit cards daily. Now he knows what I've been doing.
And the he tauht the kids to do the same thing. My younger son found two charges on his debit card that weren't his - they hadn't been approved yet, but were "pending." Someone had call one of those 1-800- porn sites and tried to use his debit card. The bank has tied up the money until they finish investigating, which can be up to 60 days (they have taken over 30 days so far). He is thinking about changing banks due to their lack of concern - and this is from the new bank that took over his old bank. |
They did that with my debit card as well. I have 4 separate $1 charges and then 2 $9.95 charges. My bank told me the identity theives do that all the time and people just don't catch them. If you don't check your bank statement it can add up. |
That sucks. Glad they are sorting it out for you though. |
Me too! But after a few small transactions, my thieves rang up over $4000 in purchases! Yikes! I'm surprised the credit card company didn't shut them down sooner. I just have to deny the charges and they will be reversed. Still, it is just awful thinking about how they got the number and how much they were able to steal. |
There was a program on one of news channels about an electronic scanner that can be attached to ATM's ( I believe it is also the same scanner that resturant employees are using ). It advised trying to jiggle the ATM where you insert the card, if it moves do not use it and contact the bank. We do not use a card in resturants for this reason, but from the looks of the device it could be used most anywhere. I guess it's best not to let the card out of your sight. |
TGIFridays has started usig a little machine at each table - you can pull up your bill and pay by credit card without it leaving the table.... |
I got my new credit card. All of the numbers are the same except for 3 digits! |
