My knee hurts

Last week my knee was kinda ouchy. I've been bumping into things lately, so I figured I whacked it. Today it hurts. Just now I knocked it on the table leg and it was really painful. No swelling. No fever. No visible bruises.

Could arthritis happen so suddenly? It hurts just on one side of the knee, not on the front. I don't recall having twisted it and Lord knows I'm not athletic so I don't think I strained it.

Hope it gets better soon. Boy do I know how a knee can hurt!!! I still have a 7 inch plate in mine with 8 screws. The cold makes it hurt!
Oh well I just live with it lol. I can tell the weather by it :D
Yes, arthritis can set in like that. But it could also be your IP band.
Hi Paula,
arthritis pain can set in quickly especially if you change activities or it gets cold suddenly but the arthritis itself takes years to develop unless its due to an infection.
Depending on whether its the inside or the outside of the knee it can be different muscles that are tight or it may be the cartilage inside the knee.
Initially try Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation although I dont know any sheepie owners who get much time to sit around with an ice pack and their feet up  but a stretchy bandage on it and as much rest as possible should help.
After 3-4 days try some heat but stop the heat if the knee swells or gets more sore.
Fish oil capsules help inflammation and glucosamine helps arthritis and damaged cartilage but glucosamine is made from shell fish so dont take it if you have a shell fish allergy.
If you want to go medical try ibuprofen as long as you know you're not allergic and always take it with food to protect your stomach.
If you're still in pain at around 7-10 days consult a health care practitioner.
Sorry I sound like the back of the medicine packet, I was trying to fit lots of info into a few words.
Mim
Deb, if it does not go away go see an Orthepod(sp). It could be that you have torn some cartilage.

One day I got up and my knee hurt even though I did not remember doing anything to it. Three months later I was on an operating table getting it fixed.
sounds like my minescus tear they had to go in and clean out.......
good luck.
I think Marilyn hit the diagnosis. I had a massage last week and almost jumped off the table when the therapist hit my IT (ilio-tibial?) band. I've been very tight lately because I haven't been doing my stretching program. Plus I remembered that yesterday I did some plies on the Bosu balance ball, so that may have contributed. So back to my regular program of nightly stretches.
I can never remember if it is IP or IT band! Maybe now I will remember! I've had trouble with mine twice. 1st time I was sure I had a bone spur or something as the pain was on the outside, left side of my left knee. The longer I let it go, the deeper the pain went & the longer it got in length. Once they did the massage & ultra sound & got me to do the stretching exercises it eased up & went away completely. This last time I should have known better. I spent the Thanksgiving holiday (before during & after) on my feet constantly. With a bad right knee (no cartilage left, arthritis & bone on bone) I overcompensate & end up with the IT band problem. Mine gets to the point where I can't even go down stairs! Keep up the stretching exercises & that should help!

How's your knee going? Hope its feeling better!!
Mim, thanks for asking. It's still ouchy. I'm having a massage on Friday and I'm going to have her work on that leg. If it's still ouchy, I guess I'll go see my friend's doctor who is into "sports medicine."
Good idea. I hope the massage helps. Good luck with sorting it out. It can take over 6 weeks for even a sprain/strain to settle, so hopefully it will be nothing major. :)
UPDATE: Went to the sports medicine doc today and I am officially old. He diagnosed bursitis. Along with some tendonitis. He gave me a script for anti-inflammatories and feels that a few weeks of those (along with certain exercises and icing it) will take care of it. Didn't pick up the rx due to weather, but did the exercises and iced it and it hurts more. I'm assuming because of all his poking and prodding.

And secondary update on Bob the Wonder Pony. His lab work all came back beautiful so he's not insulin resistant. The vet said he's in great shape (healthy as a horse, bwah ha ha!)
Well, I'm sorry to hear that you are old... 8)
The alternative isn't good, so you better take it!

Way to go Bob. Porky Pete wishes him the best.
Hey, OLD!!! Watch who you're calling old you young thing.

I had bursitis in my elbow in my 20's (thanks to my first dalmo who thought heel was a mean person who he should run away from) and tendonitis in my shoulder in my 30's (thanks to my hobby-flying trapeze)

My sympathies, both those conditions really hurt. Get on to the anti inflams but be careful of your stomach. Because if you dont get them settled they can linger a bit and that's darn annoying and painful.

Get well. :D
Bummer about the "old" part...so that is what all those numbers mean. I hope your new meds help eleviate the pain.

Good news on Bob!!

Feel better soon!
Paula - Glad you got a diagnosis and some meds. I hope it helps and you get some relief soon. :D

Mim - are you serious? :o I've never known anyone whose hobby was playing on a flying trapeze. 8O How exactly does one get started in that activity as a hobby?? :P

Tammy, I went to a Club Med for a holiday and had some lessons and then was addicted. In Melb we have a circus school so I had more lessons there, and I holidayed each year at a beach town that had a rig where I could have lessons (that was a BIG sacrifice)   I learnt flying trapeze and a climb a rope act called spanish web and performed in their shows. It was great fun but for the injury I'd still be doing it. I'll see if I can find a photo and upload it.

Thanks for the speedy approval guys.

Its a bit shadowy but I'm the one down below with the pointy toe thing happening.
:twitch: Wow! I am in awe!! I cannot imagine taking that on as a hobby. Just too cool!! Bravo Mim!! :go:
Wow MIM, I'm really impressed!
Is it true what they say about the trapeeze?

I dunno, what do they say about trapeze? :D :D :D :D
