Is there a way to condition w/o using conditioner?

I noticed one small spot that is flaking.

Should I just spray some of that leave-in conditioner on him or does he just need conditioner?

I already use BOTH the stuff and ice-on-ice (stuff was on sale ...normally use ice) whenever I brush which is a quick run through once a day.

The only time I've bathed him is when he's gone on himself, and I've tried to only make it his rear. One full bath when he came home.

His coat is so dang different than yuki. It already looks like I see gray coming in around the legs, but the coat is so different ...it could be my imagination. 8O His hair grows so fast, I love it!

Maybe I should just try working on the diarrhea issue (one wet stool a day, followed by several hard ones)? He's on what he was eating when I got him as well as a little sprinkle of kelp (breeder was using it), and now I regret getting such large puppy bags of at least the brand I think is causing it.

Yikes! That's an awful lot of crap, eh, I mean chemicals, to use on a baby puppy 8O

He barely has any hair at this age, so not much to mat. (OK, it may feel differently to you, but it's just fluff, not his real coat). Just put some plain water in a spray bottle and spritz if you need some kind of moisture for grooming purposes.

Of course, the flaking skin could just be diet not agreeing with him or too hot and dry in house. You can't really condition that with a coat conditioner, but you can stop assaulting the poor guy with spray bottles

You could try adding some salmon oil or something like that to his diet I guess for the dry skin but if he's having digestive issues, less is more until you figure out what the offending agent may be.

Mind you, kelp is good stuff. Hope it's not that.

At what age should I start using the sprays then? :) I was just giving a few sprays (of one or the other ...whatever I had in that location) before I did a quick run through. Not until coat was soaked or anything. I thought you're not supposed to brush before spraying. I'll stop using it!

I probably wouldn't use it until the coat actually starts needing some help detangling, like when the mats start so you should have a few months. You're right to not brush dry but like Kristine said, at this age, water in a spray bottle works just fine. Honestly I never thought about the chemical aspect of it, I was just avoiding using anything I had to pay for until it was necessary!
Thanks! Makes sense to me.
he may also be adjusting to your water yet. Iw ouldn't call one wet stool followed by normal ones diarrhea.

Morgan always has one stooll that is wetter than the others - seems like its normal for him. Usually it is after exercise or if he is stressed.
Tiggy has one wet stool a day too.
And usually after exercise.
If she really runs around like a fool it can be quite wet, but not enough to dirty her coat.
Up until she was about 6 or 7 months old any little thing would set off her tummy, too much excitment, a different treat, my husband giving her a titbit from his plate  That all seems to have settled down now which is nice :D
Betsy had chronic itching and flaking skin. Her puppy coat looked dry. I changed her food (Pro Purina to Wellness) and the itching/flaking stopped. It took us about a year of experimenting to find a kibble that Roxy could tolerate without having wet stools.

I have always bathed Betsy once a week. After trying a bunch of shampoos (I even tried the Head and Shoulders route) I am now using Isle of Dog's whitening shampoo and the conditioner. Her puppy coat looks great and her skin too.

I use Silken Spirits on my other dogs instead of the conditioner. We avoid the conditioning step for them - they are rescues and really don't care for the water/bath thing, so the silicon adds a little sheen to their coats, they smell great and we are done fast.

Good luck!
until he is older you dont need to do all that stuff! If your worried about condition go get some mane and tail conditioner and mix it with water diluted in a spray bottle. He's just a baby..............

The other thing is I always give my guys full baths if they are dirty............. Even my full grown guys get baths once a month.

but if your that worried about it call your breeder
I have to give Jenny a bath once a month. I use VO-5 conditioner on her, she smells great for a couple of days  It actually makes it easier to groom her and she fluffs up nicely when blown dry. I don't remember ever having to bath my other OES as much as her.
