I don't know anything about the dog food, but I think at this point as long as your dogs have something to eat, you should feel blessed. Your dogs will be fine. Things will get better for you and you can go back to the good food. Just buy what you can afford right now. Just think about it, some parents are probably feeding their children Ramon noodles right now or going without all together because of the economy. I think a lot of people are doing what you are doing and going for the lower priced dog food.
I was even wondering if a lot of people were going to switch to cheaper foods and what foods they were switching to? Maybe someone should post about the best quality for the lowest price foods? That might help a lot of people right now. |
I switched to Costco Pemium Lamb and Rice (about $28/40 lbs) about 6 months ago from an expensive, holistic food. Funny how we can cut down to cheaper cuts for ourselves to save a little but feel guilty about economizing with our dogs...
If anything, the dogs are doing better on the Costco kibble (firmer stools, less gas). I still make my own stew of ground beef, rice, vegetables and beef or chicken broth to mix with the kibble. OK, I probably do it more for myself because it smells good to me, but the dogs love it and now give me a dirty look if they get plain kibble. But basically, I agree with Ella. Any decently formulated dog food that provides complete nutrition is going to be OK, and a long shot better than many dogs have to face. |

I've been happy with it. It is made by Diamond Pet Foods and is similar to their branded Diamond Naturals Large Breed Lamb and Rice. No wheat or corn, brown rice and lamb, no by-products, vegetables, antioxidants and Omega 3 (or is it 6?) fish oils, and glucosamine. About the same thing they had been getting for twice the price. My dogs have never done well on exclusively chicken or fish based protein kibble so I tend to stick with Lamb base. |
babycheeks wrote: I recently lost my job so I am in a financial bind.... and the guy next to me sales ShowCoat and Strongpoint dog food for 20ibs only 14 bucks!!! I looked at the Strongpoint didnt think all of them were all that great with the dried egg product and beet pulp but correct me if I am wrong... I thought the Showcoat might be okay really not much ingredients to it... there use to eating Natural balance dog food but it was a very far drive just to get that ... there isnt anything else in this very small town ( ranch like) atmosphere of Texas. Ive ordered online in the past but its not feasible with shipping for my family. Id have to order online and that would just cost us more. I do have an emergency fund for the dogs just in case for medical reasons... but I dont want to dip into that on the food. Does anyone know if Showcoat is an okay brand I cant find much on it since they dont advertise really? Also is it going to be okay only feeding a mostly lamb food...they dont have any other Showcoat Formulas but lamb to really switch around too unless I put them on the puppy sometimes so they can get some chicken. By the way this is going to be for Sheepdog and poodle.
Thank you so much! Just concerned since its my first time learning of this product. You may have read my recent posts about my 2 labs who passed away within a week. I was told something they ate, drank or were otherwise environmentally exposed to was the culprit. My other 5 dogs in the house are healthy, the 2 labs lived together in their kennel. There was one 50# bag that only the 2 labs ate - I was trying a new brand that came highly recommended by our pet supply store - and it was Strongpoint. It was being recommended for those who fed Canidae and were concerned about the formulary change. I tried a bag of the Strongpoint - and for some reason only fed it to Tater and macy. I didn't want to switch foods with the others for risk of GI upset before shows, classes, etc. So the 2 ate the whole bag themselves. I am not trying to implicate this company - just one of the possibles I have narrowed things down to for what could have happened. I will not use it again. |

I felt the same way when we switched to Costco Chicken and Rice (lamb was too rich!) Kirkland brand by Costco is actually a quality food! The chicken and rice is 20 bucks for 40 lbs (another reason I LOVE Costco!) |
Is that the name of the food or the store? I have not seen it here in this area, East coast near Rochester NY |
I found this by searching hope it helps.

I don't know much about dog nutrition, but I will say that the Trader Joe's brand has been working wonders for my cat and it's about the same price as Purina, much less than the science diet she was on before. She has herpes in her eye and it's mostly disappeared since I started her on the TJs brand. Everything I eat comes from there, so it can't be that bad. |

which food? edit: oh I see from your other post you were referring to costco. we don't have them in NY |
einy eats the costco chicken and rice and for a dog with a sensitive tummy i couldn't be happier - if i can't get to costco hes good on the sams club chicken and rice too, but it cost a bit more.
its inexpensive and he loves it, it a bit of a drive about 35 mins to our nearest costco but as a bag last about a month i'm not complaining and it gives use and excuse to stock up on bulk items for us at the same time (tinned goods. toilet tisues, meat etc etc) zoe and einy |
Has anyone tried the Rachel Ray Nutrish? How expensive is it? I like the idea that profit goes to help animal rescue. |

We tried it... Max wasn't crazy about it. He ate it, but I wouldn't buy it again. Looser stools and a bit of gas. |

My dogs do not do well with corn but, I am sure it is a fine food as well! |
I'm worried for you to find a new job!
Good luck! |
