Eating the ornaments

Okay I knew that the tree would be a challenge this year as Jasper is eating anything not nailed down and my favorite word is "No" but he has taken to the round ball ornaments. I remember Miley doing this too but I it did not seem so bad then. I must be getting old.

Just wondering if any other pups are having fun un-decorating the tree.

Crazy dog! :)

Charlie has done amazing this year! We were really worried about a BIG fun-loving puppy and a Christmas tree this year. No problem at all with any of our decorations!! :D

Our daughter's dogs, on the other hand, are a different story! She and her husband left them in the house today during work because it was cold outside today. When they got home, they found half of the ornaments gone or broken, both of the plugs on the strings of lights gone, the extension cord chewed in half, and the skirt on their couch chewed up. Needless to say, "dead" doggies!! (She has an English Mastiff/Great Dane puppy--8 mos. old and a Golden Retriever/Chocolate Lab--9 yrs. old. Guess who did the damage??) Also, needless to say, doggies outside tomorrow (or at least the garage!).
Given Tiggy's track record I havent even unpacked the Xmas decorations.
I figure it just not worth the stress and potential stomach prob.s :D :D
I caught Brutus playing with an ornament. When he looks outside by the window, he brushes the xmas tree and some ornaments sticks to his coat. :D :D :D :D
Maybe Jasper felt you had to many bulbs on the tree. You know OES like to redecorate, bite legs off chairs, put new holes in walls ect.

I was wondering how my Aussie puppy, Asia, was going to do with the two decorated trees. So far she has touched neither. TG. China, however, my other Aussie, enjoys napping under the tree in the Piano room. Violet, my OES, is not fazed with either..not food she's not interested. lol
Our tree is in the stand, but not decorated yet. Jenny hasn't done anything to the tree yet, except that she has gone over to it and taken a few quick nips that she thinks she is getting away with. I am sure that it will be challenging for us as well once the tree is decorated. I have a feeling that she will try to undecorate and fast as we are decorating :D
Pyr/Mastiff........amazing they have any ornaments on the TOP of the tree! Could it be the retriver who started it???

I'm so thankful my guys have always ignored the tree. The bears around the base may help......they were originally put there to keep Clancy the Irish Wolf from going behind the tree to nap. She'd stretch out her legs and down would come the tree. Only thing now is a few sniff of the bears each year, "Welcome back guys" and that's it. Bless my furry children.
Winston has chewed on two of the wooden ones. But then last week he chewed up a package of Gillette Fusion razors and one of the five-blade cartridges. The x-ray showed two razor blades in his stomach. He's fine now but I got a bottle of liquid pepper/bitter apple from the vet and have been "painting" the ornaments every few days. So far, the tree and the ornaments are fine.

Oh. Is that what fashionable OES owners are calling it these days?  8)

Sybil could start her own business.

The dog's stomach problems, or yours? 8)

I am with you. We put a bunch of small trees up high on some tables and weighted things down. I still have every expectation of finding things on the floor, smashed to smithereens.

In fact, in the time I have been writing this response, I have had to fish two pieces of hard plastic out of Pesty Ross's mouth.Better run, since I have no idea what they were once part of.

Weeeeell... I've officially been added to the dog-owner-idiot-list this year

Not once, but twice, Bumble has eaten a light bulb off the Christmas tree. Yes, actually eaten it... leaving the jagged, broken off end on the strand.

After a frantic call to the vet on-call (who turned out to be one of our previous vets) he said not to worry... give him some Metamucil with his meal. I worried anyway  and soaked several slices of soft white bread in water and sprinkled it with Metamucil... and gave him a bowl of cooked oatmeal on top of that. This was about two weeks ago. I'm relieved to say that everything passed without incident (TG).

He will leave a candy cane sitting on his foot for a few minutes but can't keep from munching on the tree lights.
http://oesusa.com/index.625.jpg Goodness we love this dog!

The tree is now confined to the dining room which has a Dutch door, a set of French doors and the front door... but no doggie door. :sidestep:

Well both really    Its easy to be confusing in writing isnt it :? :?

We may have to trade notes on "things my OES has eaten" 8O

I fished some hard plastic bits out of Tiggy's mouth the other day. She'd chewed up a cat toy. I dont even know how she got it but she is a very good sneak thief
A few more bits appeared the next day while I was on poo patrol. Didnt seem to have effected her digestion though :)
This is where this posting really comes in handy this time of year, especially if the dogs manage to eat Glass ornaments.

It works.

The cotton ball method is what our vet recommended recently to get the razor blades through Winston. He ate the milk-soaked cotton balls like they were marshmallows. Yummy, yummy, yummy.

My vet said soak the cotton wool in parafin oil but then cod liver oil to make it more palatable. She then said "oh mix in some wet food to increase the odds of him eating it, otherwise you'll just have to shove them down."

She couldnt believe it when I told her that Rastus picked out the cotton wool first and ate that by preference then finished off the wet cat food for seconds.

As I mentioned in another post he can be a dumb dalmatian
Our Christmas Tree is in doggy jail.

We have one of those big 'cages' for Hudson. It's more like a floorless playpen. We've put up the tree in it. The black bars are about three or four feet high. Looks like the tree has been very bad, but it's effective.

You can even open the little door and reach in to remove the presents.

Hopefully next year will be better.

But, he hasn't damaged a single ornament or gift this way.
Yes, it does work.
Years ago, when I had twin human babies and young dogs, I placed our tree in the playpen. It was a wooden playpen, and I decorated it with garland and stuff. It didn't look too bad and the tree and presents stayed safe!
