Can you recommend a pet insurance company?

Hello all!

Now that we have settled in we need to look for pet insurance, we had it in the UK and it covered medical expenses like he time he ate a toy etc. they don't cover routine vaccines i know.

BUT! what companies would you recommend? hubby says says to ask you all as we have no idea where to start

Thank you

Hi!

You might want to look at this page here on oes.org...

Compare PetsMart and VPI (Banfield) Insurance has more info than the title would imply.
I was just looking around at them too as my dh has insurance discount with VPI. I called my vet and spoke with him....... and he said with the # in my household, to just put a set amount onto a credit card, and put the card away until needed.

They are very expensive here in the USA. I was looking at 200.00 a month for all 5 animals here.
With insurance, you'll regret having paid the premiums if your dog remains healthy or rejoice that you had the forethought to take it out if you've had reason to use it.

Someone on the forum mentioned this one...

I liked this plan... it's unusual because it includes genetic conditions http://www.embracepetinsurance.com/Cont ... erage.aspx and you have the option to select coverage for chronic conditions that have to be treated year after year http://www.embracepetinsurance.com/Cont ... erage.aspx . Note that they do have the right to non-renew. Underwritten by Lloyds of London. We took out high limits on Bumble and will drop it back at about 2 years of age.

I liked the following plan because it covers hip dysplasia though we don't have this coverage on any of the sheepies... it's on Maggie and Meesha-
http://www.petcareinsurance.com
But this plan has set limits it will pay per system category. We haven't used these policies yet. :phew:

The next plan has paid well... it's through the AKC and we took it out when Emma and Darby were puppies-
http://www.akcpethealthcare.com/
Darby will soon max out her benefits for allergies alone ($3,000 limit per condition on the Essentials Plus plan) but we will continue to carry it to cover other conditions that may arise. This policy does not cover hip dysplasia but we were fortunate that neither of them have this condition. We retested for allergies a couple of months ago and began new allergy shots recently. It's paid for allergy testing, serum, shots, benign tumor removal, cyst removal, accidental mushroom ingestion, etc. after the deductible and co-pay. This policy is currently about $395 per year...

With insurance, it's always best to take it out when the dog is young and healthy because preexisting conditions are almost always excluded... they can also prevent you from getting any coverage at all. Panda and Kaytee fall into this group... Panda with her hip dysplasia and Kaytee with her cleft palate and blindness. They were both uninsurable for sickness coverage. BUT... they did qualify for accident coverage through the ASPCA- their Safety Plan. The premium is just over $100 per year. http://www.aspcapetinsurance.com/Pet-In ... ASPCA.aspx

Just our experiences... good luck with your decision.
