Puppy Grooming & the "Parting Technique"

Hello all!

I'm new to the forum, and need some advice. We have a gorgeous 6 month old OES puppy, who we've had from 8 weeks. He's called Woof (or Arthrug Man on the Moon). I groom Woof pretty much every day and, despite the fact we go out into the muddy fields of the UK (I'm lucky enough to live in the country), I feel I do an OK job - he's always lovely and fluffy. Anyway, my question is - when do I have to start using the Parting technique?

Woof's very patient (in fact he's already beginning to love being groomed), but at the moment I still only need to brush him through with a bristle brush or a comb - is this wrong?

PS - I promise I'll get some Pix of Woof on later today - hes too cute not to share....

One thing I forgot - Woof's NOT so happy about having his claws clipped. in fact, whilst he was a little nervous at 8 weeks, and an absolute angel at 16 (laying still for what seemed like forever), there is just no way he's letting us do it this time - in fact he got so stressed at being restrained that I got very upset and let him go.

Please help! Apart from potentially impairing Woof it's going to cost me a fortune in vet bills.....
Hey there!
I know your original subject was the parting technique, but I just couldn't help adding on to your thoughts about clipping Woof's Nails. Curtis has just turned 7 months old this week, and continues to be extrememly laid back and well behaved when it comes to brushing, bathing, ear cleaning and even having the hair pulled out of his inner ear (something that had his owner near fainting when I first saw the vet ripping the hair out of his little 4 month old ears!). Nails are totally different story, however. While Curtis has never really snapped at me in his life, I think he seriously conciders it whenever a friendly paw-shake turns into a little more than he bargained for. On our first try with clipping, he was wriggling so much, I accidentally clipped him below the bloodline, and WOW did I feel awful! He spent the next week in the lap of puppy-luxury and 9 uncut nails as I tried to make up for it.
Anyways, if there's any advice out there to be had, bring it on!
With warm thoughts and a cold nose...
I let Bentley remain standing when I clip--I lift each foot as if I was cleaning a horses hooves. I initially fed him a treat before clipping, then grabbed a foot facing away from his head(and held the leg as if he was "pointing")--he couldn't see the nail clippers and couldn't hear it very well either. I did one foot at a time per day untill he realized I wasn't trying to cut his legs off:) I think Bentley felt very vulnerable laying down--especially if I wasn't rubbing his furry belly! I have had friends who have just practiced lifting feet, building trust (no clipping) and then one day voila! They clipped!
I'm So gald it's not just me....gotta keep trying I s'pose...
