I have Elna.... My mother was a seamstress and wouldn't have a Singer. Later she quilted and used her machines to piece... |
I sew, but mostly am a quilter. I have been using cheap brother machines (from Walmart) for piecing but the last one died and I am in the same boat. I have a problem paying 1,000 for a machine (although I did for my id arm quilter ).
I am going to look at the bernina's because my quild mostly uses them. i am also intrigued by the Husquevana - but mostly becasue we had a mower by them that would not die let e know what you find out - we can compare notes!! |
I have a brother XL-5700. One of the reasonably priced ones, just a few steps up from the basic models. It has been great. Not seeing much action now, but I have used it for quilting and lots of garment repairs. |
I have an entry level Bernina and have been quite happy with it (five years now). |
I have a 30 year old basic Singer that just does zigzag.
And my mother gave me her old singer Furtura when she got her Bernina. I want a Bernina. |
Like I said my singer furura 900 was top line about 40 yrs ago. I loved it but the bobbin keeps jaming up. I don't want to buy another if there is still help for this one. |
I have two entry level Berninas (one's my mothers) that are 40 years old. If the new ones are like the old, they are battleships. |
I have an ELNA TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and it still works. It belonged to my Mother and I've had it for 13 years now. Way to go ELNA.... |
All i know is it's a singer.......... and i think it was 1973 when my mom and dad gave it to me for christmas! I think i have used it maybe 50 time. lol. I had a home ech teacher ruin sewing for me in high school and if i can get someone else to do it, i do.......... |
If you have a Singer Featherweight portable (I think in the black case only?) it's worth something. |
no mine is in a blu plastic case, machine itself is blue but it is metal. it was the last year they made the heavey metal......... another reason i hate dragging it out! |
I have an old Singer....it only goes forward (no backward or zigzag). However....it can probably sew through metal
I also have a Pfaff for quilting that I got as a refurbished unit. It has a LOT of features....most of which I haven't even tried yet. Jennifer, Baxter, Cassiopia and Abby |

Not sure if I have 4 or 5 Elna's. For my mom, it was like Lay's potato chips, one was never enough... I had one of her old ones, my sis has one old one, and when I was cleaning some of her stuff out of her house, I took home 3 or 4 elnas and an ancient White, which only goes forwards, no zig/zag or anything fancy, but a work horse. Mom used it to make leather jeans for my brothers when they took up motorcycles... I guess if I was to buy a machine today, I would have to think about what I would use it for. I love to sew but have no time, so it would mostly be for mending and hemming... I do on occasion take a sewing class just so I can use the great tables for cutting out... My dream house would have a room for my yarn, knitting needles and knitting machines, a room for my sewing machines and fabric, a room for my jewelry making equipment, and one for my painting and other artistic endeavors... Oh to dream.... |
