Hubby picked up a set for MO this afternoon at PetsMart!. I'm not one to suggest they are the best.......they were the only ones they had. It's going to take awhile before she's comfortable with them and we learn to get them on correctly.
I'm finding even with the velcro strap, they come off. These are not the hard sole version, maybe they are better. These are more like a nylon fabric sock, velcro down the back and a wrap around velcro strap, non-slip nubbies on the bottom. Problem is I can't get the strap tight enough to keep the boots on. Of course it doesn't help she's digging for gophers with her boots on. I'm trying to cover her arthritic foot from direct contact with the cold ground. I'll be interested in learning from the more experienced members here. |
I have Ruff Wear's Bark'n Boots Grip Trex all-condition, all-terrain, all-season boots. They are a little pricy, but I love them. Winston used to get snow packed into his paws when we would go for walks - these boots have a vibram sole and they work great. I also use the liners -I am not sure it they help - but I rarely have an issue with the boots coming off. One thing to watch when securing the boot is to make sure a good portion of the long hair is pulled of the way before securing the boots.
Good Luck - I know some people who also have luck with Muttlucks - you might look into those as well. |
The ruff wear ones are the one i looked at (online) just because of the sole. I need to keep the snow from clumping up under his paw.
Poor guy today at ski area would get out walk/run around then come to me and hold his paw up with frozen balls attached underneath. I guess equivalent to us having a rock in our shoe??? Anyways the ruff wear had the sole I figured it would help with traction as well as the snow. The were pricey...but if they work and last then it doesn't matter. There will be snow for the next 5 months @ my house, no way around it. |
I have the kind real mushers have......
Actually, I really do. They use the ones that are made of thick polar fleece, with velcro closures. The dog still can feel the ground, use their nails, and be safe on rough terrain. It keeps the snow from packing in the pads, and also keeps the rough snow and ice from cutting and wearing away at the pads (think - sandpaper). The ones I have are from Kondos Outdoors, and are very reasonably priced. They are a northen MN company that is great to work with. http://www.kondosoutdoors.com/mm5/merch ... y_Code=DB7 I have the tall single layer booties - with 2 strips of velcro and are made of fleece. Get them really snug with the velcro - then they will stay on. I do have the elephant hide, but we use them only for shows - they are slippery on the snow. We just use them for trips off the table to potty and get to ringside in bad weather to keep the hair clean and dry. Otherwise they are worthless! |
Oscar wears Muttluks. I think they sell them at PetSmart except that they never have XL in stock, which is what I need for the moose. Oscar goes through them at a pretty good clip as we walk daily on pavement, but when he just wears them in the snow in the yard, they seem to hold up well and dry quickly.
Laurie and Oscar |
Beau & Genny wear Muttluks, too. I like them. They work well and stay on good. They've played in them all afternoon many times, running and chasing each other around - doesn't slow them down at all, so they must be somewhat comfortable. |

I have pretty girl quilted ones for Marley that match her doggles but I usually end up going out in the yard and look for them |
Harry got the Muttluks last Christmas.
I cannot say that he likes them when I first put them on. He does a "high step" if he hasn't worn them in a while since boots feel foreign to him. For the most part they stay on - unless I didn't fasten them good enough. Here he is playing in them last March. Notice that one fell off before he started playing but the rest stayed on - and Harry, as you can see, plays wild. |
I ordered boots for Obe yesterday. I went with the ones Dawn suggested from Kondo's Outdoor (the ones the mushers use). Now lets get Obe to wear/use them!!! |
Shon- I got those last year after Dawn suggested them and I couldn't be happier! I think Walter actually likes wearing them

I did a little un planned boot experiment yesterday. Since I always forget to use the wax on their feet before they go out (and it doesn't work on wet paws) yesterday I called them back in to put on boots and couldn't find Morgan's muttlaks. I did find a brand new pair of pet store purchased cheap boots in his size in a drawer and put those on him.. Marley had the same kind on - she LOVES the snow and went out the door - sort of like "I can fly!!!" Morgan went out and laid down on the porch. this went on for about 15 minutes - him laying down her trying to tempt him to play - me trying to push him off the porch
I finally found his Mutlaks (in a mesh bag hanging up by the door of all places ) and switched his boots. he got up and they played for a good half hour and then I went out and we all played for another hour or more. For him the difference in the boot made a HUGE difference. Now if I could just find his xback harness which I KNOW was hanging on the hook by the back door all summer...... |
Poor Morgan, how stressful not to have the right boots on.
I am glad you found the "right" ones Kerry so he could play. |
i cant believe you would do something like that to poor morgan.
obe cant even use his winter boots. |
