Macy 7/14/93 - 12/2/08

Today it was finally time. I had my chocolate lab Macy put to sleep.

She was 15 1/2 yrs old and just doing so poorly. I had waited and waited, but I realized I was being selfish and she was suffering.

Macy was my graduation present to myself when I graduated with my RN. I had lost my GSD a few years earlier, but knew I didn't really have the time needed for a new puppy. The thought of getting a puppy got me through the last few semesters. I was not sure what breed I wanted, I just knew I would know the one when it was time.

In town there was a sign - chocolate lab puppies for sale. I checked it out, and they had one female left. She was actually the pick of the litter, but the purchaser backed out and they had her left. They bred strictly hunting labs, and they were out of the calmer, stockier, canadian breeding. She was 3 months old and I fell in love. Her puppy name was Macy, and I kept it. I registered her as Maxi's Touch of Class. They were very interested that I was going to do obedience and therapy dog work with her, as well as hunting.

We had fun doing our stuff, and Todd hunted with her. A sweeter, gentler lab was never to be. :) She was my classroom dog for all my obedience classes and tolerant of all the rowdy puppies. She trained numerous other dogs to the fine art of pheasant and duck hunting. She was my faithful therapy dog until I retired her at age 12. Her senior years were spent hanging out and doing the genteel sport of dove hunting with Todd.

Macy May - rest in peace.

I am so sorry Dawn. Macy looks like she was a wonderful pup.
Oh Dawn, I'm so sorry. It's so hard, especially when they're with you for such a long time and you've got that kind of significance with getting her, too. It's such a crappy decision to have to make but you know when the time is right. :ghug:
So sorry for your loss :( She looks and sounds like she was an amazing dog :)
I'm so sorry for your loss. :( :ghug:
I'm glad you had so many happy years together.
She sounds like she was an amazing dog.
My heart goes out to you on the loss of Macy. It is truly the hardest decision we ever make, but you know she is now at peace and healthy and running around at the bridge with all our other dogs, just waiting to see us again. :ghug: :ghug:
I'm sorry for this new hole in your heart.

Macy enjoyed a perfect Lab life with you.
Dawn

Sorry for your loss. A friend put his lab down last Friday.
Dawn sorry to hear of your loss of your darling Macy, what a lovely, special sweetie she was, 15 1/2 fantastic age too, I know the decision is hard and I am going through this at the moment, know we are thinking of you and bless your darling macy for being there for you through all those special years.. May the memories flow and she will always be there watching over you, they never really leave us :ghug:
Dawn, So sorry to hear of Macy's going to the bridge. She sounds like she had one great life and was luck to have found you for a mom. Chin up, she would have wanted it that way.
Dawn: So sorry to hear about Macy. We've all been there one time or another. It is the down side of owning dogs. But when you think of all the wonderful memories in 15-1/2 years I'm sure you wouldn't have passed those up. The hurt is worth it. :ghug:

What a beautiful girl. Saying goodbye is so hard. My heart goes out to you.
Oh...Dawn...I am so sorry. Your Macy is with all of our forever puppies waiting at the Bridge for us.

I know how hard it is to have to make that decision, but we all do it because there is no greater unselfish act as the one to let them go.

You will always have Macy in your heart and the wonderful memories in your soul. We are here for you.

:ghug: :ghug:

Dawn, I'm so sorry for you loss of Macy. She looks like she was a great companion and friend.
I'm so sorry Dawn. She's a pretty girl, and I wish all dogs could live the life I'm sure she did.
Dawn,

I am so sorry of the loss of your much loved macy. Ask anyone I have such a soft spot for labs. I have always said nothing beats the heart of a lab, they are just such wonderful dogs. I know she is missed, saying goodbye to unconditional labby love is so hard and my thoughts are with you. Maybe she and Savannah are retrieving balls thrown by my father.

hugs
Cindy
Sorry to hear of your loss.
She had the best possible life for a Lab - especially with you as her Mom. :) I'm so sorry for your loss, Dawn.

Our thoughts are with you, Dawn. She sounds wonderful!
Dawn I am so sorry for your loss.

How lucky you both were to have each other. I bet she has lots of doves in heaven to hunt.

Hugs to you and Todd.

:ghug:
I'm sorry for your loss Dawn. 15 1/2 is quite a feat though, and the grey in her beard shows it... obviously a well loved and happy girl.
aww dawn, im so sorry to hear about macy....what a beautiful dog! all of my thoughts are with you.
Oh Dawn,
She was so beautiful. I know how much you'll miss her. But we both know you did the right thing.

And we know, she'll be waiting for you at the bridge.

I'm sorry.
Thanks, everyone. :ghug:

After a few days, letting the emotions start to settle, I feel a lot better. I was so stressed, worried, guilty, and all that. Now I feel more at peace, no second thoughts (unless you count as Troy was injecting the medicine in her veins and I wanted to shout "suck it back out!"). But really, I feel so much better, and I know she is a better place.

As a nurse, I am so grateful we have this choice to let our pets die in a somewhat dignified manner.

I know Macy had a good, long life, thankfully. Not all dogs are that lucky. She lived through pyo at age 10, cancerous tumor removal at age 12. And still had 3 more years of lab fun!

You guys are the best. :)
So very sorry...
Saying a prayer for you and your family so that you may get through this tough time.
Dawn, I am sorry for your loss. It is so hard isn't it. I think your Macy is playing with my Einstein. He is probably trying to herd her right now.

Take care. Aimee
Much love to you.
She knows you did right by her, that's what matters.
Love is eternal.
*Big hug*
