Well, his elderliness has a new problem. Over the last few days, his eyes have fully dilated. FULLY. ..I mean really fully dilated . Wide open . It doesn't matter what light he's in, they are dilated . Does anyone have any idea why? He is acting perfectly normal. |
|
I'm sure you searched online and saw the different things that could cause
this. I'd schedule a vet appointment tomorrow... they should react to light. |
In reading up on what be wrong with my cat Bibbers, I came across mention of full dilation, and its relation to the sudden onset of blindness. Can your kitty still see? I'll see if I can find the online article i was reading, but I think it was in conjunction with diabetes, kidney failure, or liver disease ...at least that what I have been reading lately.
I found it: http://tlconline.org/sch/cba.html Hypertension and the related retina detachment. |
Definitely a vet check!
Add to the diabetes etc list - head trauma and brain stuff. Although I think that might be one eye not both. |
I have a 3 year old Siamese (Bronte) who has always had her pupils almost fully dilated because she is extremely short sighted. I would be worried about a bit of vision loss in your Khobi. I really hope he's OK
|
Thinking of you Deb....... |
As of this morning, he finally has a thin ring of blue showing. He is showing signs that he can, in fact, see. I think I'll give him another 24 before going to the Vet. It was a pretty tramatic holiday for him. Our niece and nephew (4 1/5 and 6) were in from St. Louis and they drove him crazy. He is not used to kids. He's a remarkable cat. Or perhaps, just very stubborn! |
Khobi has not improved. We truly feel that he is blind. I've been talking to Vet this week, and we'll be taking him in tomorrow afternoon. Wish us luck, please. This guy has used up most of his 9 lives. |

AW! Poor guy! If its related to hypertension, the articles I read say it can sometimes be reversed... good luck! |
Good Luck Khobi I hope the poor little guy is OK. All my thoughts are with you both |
Hopefully whatever caused this can be successfully treated. Please know
that many blind cats also do well in familiar environments with a little help from their families. Best wishes to Khobi. |
Ok, we're home. Khobi was really angry about having to leave ***HIS*** home. Dr. Jensen (whom we love) examined him. There is no question that his is now blind. Both of his retinas are "detached". It can be caused by several conditions. 1. Thyroid 2. Kidney failure 3. Liver problems 4. Heart problems 5. High Blood pressure. She did a totally comprensive blood test. We will get the results tomorrow. If it is thyroid, or blood pressure, well, those can be easily treated with meds. She didn't tell us about the others. To do the blood pressure test he has to stay there all day, so they can relax him and not get a false "nervous" reading. I don't know how they test the heart. Regardless of what caused his blindness, it is irreversable. But, as I stood there crying, they reassured me, cats adjust very well to blindness and function beautifully...AS LONG AS WE DON'T MOVE THE FURNITURE! I'm still very sad. It's another sign of his advancing age. I hoping for one of the easily treated aliments. Keep your fingers cross, and I'll up date you tomorrow, when I know more. Thanks for your prayers. Khobi is a good boy, and a very special friend. Oh yes! Pirate has become his seeing eye dog. He walks with Khobi..and helps guide him. He also is taking extra time to give Khobi licky kisses. Its sweet. |
Oh, bad news...but not that horrible.
It will be good to find the cause though, to prevent further health problems for the poor guy. Give him a hug, please |
I wish you the best of luck! Thyroid is really treatable; as are a couple of the possible liver ailments ( I know now first hand). Sending you positive thoughts for Kobi's diagnosis! |
Deb pets really adjust well to blindness and deafness... I am so sorry |
Poor little Khobi At least he has Pirate to help him out. Best of luck with the test results, I hope it's something easily treatable |
Oh, Deb, I'm so sorry. I hope the results you get are the good ones. |
I just talked to the vet. Khobi's kidney test show damage. I think the word she used was "Azotemia". She said blindness in cats is usually caused by high blood pressure, but she doesn't know if the HB is a result of the Kidney problems, or the kidney problems are a result of the high blood pressure. We have to take him in Monday. He'll be there all day, to get him calm and have his blood pressure taken. She has to prove it is high before he can get meds. She then said all sorts of things and options, but to tell the truth, I got confused. There was so much information coming my way. I just feel overwhelmed and need to let this all settle in, and I guess we now just wait til Monday. At least these things are treatable, and he really seems very happy. |
I wouldn't panic yet about the Kidney stuff; until they know the extent of the damage. Bibbers is 15, and her tests showed some small kidney damage; but they said thats typical in a cat her or Khobi's age, and not tosmething life threatening.
It might just be the blood pressure; keep your hopes up! Our fingers and paws are crossed for you and Khobi!! |
I'm glad you're getting some answers. Poor Kitty. Try not to worry over the weekend and wait until Monday and see what happens. |
