http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081129/ap_ ... N8kowDW7oF I don't understand this. Is human life so insignificant that buying a TV on sale is more important? A TV that you are likely only going to have a few years? I think that everyone who rushed into that store should be charged with something. Everyone who walked by, while the man was being worked on, intent on getting their sale crap before they closed the store should have their name published or something to make them feel embarrassment. What is the point of celebrating Thanksgiving when the next day you show your worst while shopping? |

I read that too. I agree 100%. Nothing should take the place of a human life. It makes me sick that the family now has do deal with a lost loved one. The memory will alwats be there. SHAME ON YOU SHOPPERS for what you did. BUT I bet no one even feels any guilt. |
I used to work retail management in a mall for many years. I promised myself that if I ever got out, that I would never shop on Black Friday weekend. Retail employees have such a hard time, because of thoughtless and inconsiderate shoppers those three days, and I never want to add to their misery.
But i always wondered; what was so important that it HAD to be bought the day after Thanksgiving at 6am? What's so important that you'd literally crush another human being to death in your pursuit of it? I cannot think of anything a Walmart (or any other retailer) has that i would ever want or need that badly. |
Mob mentality is a scary thing. Mob mentality at a Wal-Mart in a downturned economy is even scarier. Good people can do bad things in group situations. There's a sense of anonymity and a serious diffusion of responsibility so intelligent thinking goes out the window. Think of mobs after sporting events rioting. Normal people start doing very stupid things and things get destroyed and people get hurt.
As an aside, I LOVE shopping the day after Thanksgiving. It's a lot of fun to me and I do it every year. This year I didn't get up early but I have and would if I wanted anything. Most of the time I go alone since it's more efficient. I'm patient in lines and with sales people because I am fully aware of how bad these days are for them (my mom had to go to work at 3:30 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving ). I do find that some of the worst people on earth seem to come out on this day, too, though. I don't get it because you know it's going to be busy so why be cranky about it? A lot of places, in order to cut down on the mad morning rush, give out doorbuster tickets and you have to get one ahead of time to even be eligible to buy the item. I think letting people camp out is a horrible idea because they have all night to let that agitation build. They don't even let people do that for concert tickets anymore. |
Having worked retail (in a grocery store so not quite a bad as a dry goods store) for 12+ years I know how bad any holiday can be. The only time you find me out in the crowds is if my grandkids want to shop for their Christmas gifts with me rather than take the $$$$. And 1 thing I NEVER do is enter a store 1 hour before closing. I don't care what kind of store it is. I always remember the ladies who came in 15 minutes before closing & ordered 1/2 pounds of "shaved" turkey breast after we had everything cleaned up in the deli for the next mornings. And these same ladies would be in the next day at 1 PM because they forgot the bread for the sandwiches! |
The stores have brought on this mob mentality by promoting Black Friday and super sales. Year after year they pump up the public. I'm surprised this hasn't happened before. It's all about money.......... |

EXACTLY. I like having the freshest food possible on Thanksgiving. So I like to go and get everything from the farmers market, including my fresh turkey, the night before. OF COURSE the store is packed, with everyone else thinking the same way. So I can't understand why everyone is in such a bad mood. I smile and make a point of being patient, and saying please and thank you, to try and counter those people. Do people really think they will be the only ones in retail outlets on these high traffic days, and are surprised to learn otherwise?!? |
I agree w/everyone's statements. ...just wanted to say that we shook our heads here too when we heard what happened I just can't imagine stepping on anyone and not turning back....... |
It's such a horrible thing that a man is killed because of GREED, but it happens every day.
Although some people might not really care, I think the main reason that some people didn't stop to help him is because they were being shoved right over the top of him from the people behind them and they 'couldn't' stop. I think a lot of things have brought this on. Most of which could've been avoided,.......... but with our economy the was it is, I fear that it'll have a great impact on our behavior, and something like this is just the begining. |
I was really sad to read that story.Have you seen the tv show Jericho? Its an eye opener to human behaviour when things get tough. |
