I use to put it up right after Thanksgiving. I think this year I will wait but start to do the other decorations. I am worried that Snowy might take the tree down. I plan on stringing it to the ceiling. IN A CORNOR TOO. |
|
we wait to put it up - but mostly becasue we cut a fresh one and like it to be really fresh on christmas. but now that you mention it I am not sure I want to deal with the dogs and the tree for longer than I need to |
We'll wait....we get a real tree and I am always afraid the tree will get too dry.. This year we will go back to our 8 ft tree!!! Last year this was our tree.......................
It was Heart's first Christmas and I really didn't want her knocking the tree down and breaking all my special ornaments. But this year I have to put up a great tree since we host Christmas for all of the family, about 25 people---and I just can't see me doing the tiny shabby tree again.... I just hope little Heart is old enough to do a LEAVE IT!!! with the tree......... |
I had a little table top tree for the last two years, this year it's a 7 ft artificial one.
I put it up yesterday but will not decorate it for a week or so in hopes that Dutch will become used to it and leave it alone before the decos go on. So far all she seems to want to do is lay beside it, but time will tell |

Jean...she might be waiting for the right moment... |
I decorate an x-pen and put it around the tree. I have a fake flocked tree and I don't want them eating the white stuff. Worked great last year...and I am trying to get the house cleaned so we can decorate. |
I start decorating the house the day after Thanskgiving.....if I'm not at a dog show! The tree goes up last. It is huge & a couple of years ago when I counted, there were 527 ornaments (big, medium & small) on it. If I decorated it first, I'd be too pooped to do any other decorating. A lot of times Jim puts the tree up & we put the lights on it the day after Thanksgiving but I just leave it until last to decorate. |

Hm...maybe if I slap a harness on Sybil and hoist her to the ceiling in a corner I could have a tree.... Every year I have this brief flash of wanting to decorate for Christmas and every year I take one look at whomever the resident "puppy" is and manage to overcome the urge. Now....here's the challenge for you domestic diva and/or creative types: Sybil is entered at an agility trial called Hounds for the Holidays. Evidently, within limits, you are encouraged to decorate your "set-up". Limited space, so think one large soft sided crate. Since they are only allowed to run with a buckle collar at most, no battery packs can be attached to the dog so you can string lights on her to express your holiday spirit while she's running (don't think I didn't consider it though). However, since this is my favorite trial of the year, it's been three years since I could enter, and it really is filled with holiday spirit, I'd like to decorate her crate in some way and I'd especially like to emphasize the OES holiday spirit... Any thoughts? Kristine |
Sybil herself decorated?? Interesting thought.
Spray her with glitter paint? One of those jester collar type decorations? Have her pull her crate and supplies in on a sled, dressed like a reindeer. Make a crate cover that looks like a giant present. Or like a gingerbread house. Hmm, I will have to think a bit. I am assuming it is an area with no electricity? |
I have a pair of reindeer antlers with blinking red lights I bought one year for the dogs to wear to the nursing home! They fit on like a headband. Mariah looks totally embarrassed when I make her wear them. |
We always put our tree in front of our french doors and that's Chauncey's, ( AKA, nosey neighbor ) favorite spot. He doesn't seen too bothered other than laying under it to keep an eye on the neighbors. We have made all our decorations over the years and most are dog proof or dog friendly. He does occasionally knock off a rag ball and bat it around, but nothing too destructive. We will put our tree up on Sunday. |
You're correct, no electricity.
And no reindeer antlers permitted while running, but I suppose it would be fine for lounging and shopping purposes . I presume she can run with her usual horns. Nothing in the breed standard that says they have to be dehorned... I do think the AKC frowns upon dogs being run with foreign substances in their coat...I'm guessing glitter would apply, though it would look cute...(and this is why non-AKC Halloweeen trials are much more fun ) That brings us back to crate decorations... If I was really ambitious I could get some large pieces of thin cardboard this weekend and paint two of them to look like a 2 dimensional santa's sleighs and attach to either side of her crate. I have plenty of harnesses. Attach some bells to them and slap some reindeer horns on her...? Hm. Interesting.... Kristine |
We had our first tree this year (since I moved out of home)! The last few years the house has been too small or we've been in the middle of moving.
I've already had it up for about 2 weeks now, was WAY too excited. |
My tree has steadily gotten smaller over the years. The last 10 yrs or so it sits on top of a steamer trunk in the livingroom.
It came about from dogs snooping, and a couple Min Pins spiking the presents. Yuck! I put it up after Thanksgiving, when I have the time and get ambitious enough to go up in the attic and get the stuff. I do leave it up well into January though. This was last year's, the tiniest yet. |
I refuse to put my tree up until after my B-day. I'll be 29+ AGAIN on Dec. 5th. Its usually around the 15th and its a crapshoot if the ornaments get on. |

OH! Another sagittarius! Sunny too! I quite honestly can't remember how old I'm going to be (I think that's a bad sign...?),but I remember what year I was born and I can still add and subtract if I really need to know. Kristine |

Kristine Here's pictures of Mariah looking disgusted wearing her reindeer antlers. She's constantly letting me know she's a beauty queen & shouldn't be doing obedience & visiting nursing home. But she slips up when her face lights up when the residents & employees at the nursing home make a fuss over her! Come on! She's a singleton! We all know singletons will do anything to be the center of attention! Sure you don't want to borrow them Kristine? I can overnight them |

I'm sure someone here had a tree suspended from the ceiling.. or maybe I imagined it?
We are putting up the tree around the 7th. I'm reinforcing leave it now, in preparation Last year: THWACK!! "I didn't touch it mum" "HAHA this ball is funny" "Thank you for my new toy mummy" "Oooh I want this one!" |
I remember those pictures, Cassie.
They were some of my favorite Christmas pics! |
OMG!!! Cassie; I love those photos!!!!
I haven't had a tree in a couple of years. As we've outgrown the house we are in, we lost the place to put it. And of course, last year we had 2 puppies, so it was impossible. But if theres a Christmas miracle, and we are in a new house in the next 30 days (yeah right)... well the only thing we might have unpacked is the Christmas Stuff!!! |
Last year was Baloo's first Christmas and I was SURE Baloo would get into the tree. Boy were we (happily) surprised when he never even paid attention to the tree except on the day we put it up. I was all prepared to loose a few ornaments and clean up a mess... NOPE. Not once did he even make a move for it.
He did love the wrapping paper when we were opening gifts Christmas morning!!!! My hubby loves to put the tree up the Saturday after Thanksgiving... I however grow tired of it after a while and am ready to get it down before christmas actually gets here. I am trying to talk him into putting up all the other decorations first and waiting on the tree a little while longer. We'll see how that goes!!! |
Those pics are hilarious... lol, love the captions too
No idea when I'll put a tree up this year. I used to always do it the first weekend in December. Not sure about this year. |
ditto what Stacey said |

Much appreciated, but thanks to the pics, I can probably find something equivalent locally. And, yeah, Mariah does look a bit disgusted I can only imagine what Sybil will do to them if I stick something like that on her head Kristine |

Also, I need to do the "I was born in ____ and it is 2008 now, so I am ____ yrs old"! That's right! Your birthday does fall on that side of the cut-off. HORRORS! It's not us I concerned about. It's the havoc we can wreak on the rest of the world Still haven't made up my mind on the tree situation this year. Sybil is being all lovey-dovey perfect, but just had to remove the resident foster dog off the kitchen table, so methinks she has merely taken on an apprentice. It continues to surprise me that they let me foster, what, with her bad influence and all. Kristine |
i think i may have a little tree this year. |
I will start putting up decorations and the three artificial trees on Sunday night. I hope to put up the live tree by the following Sunday.
I am in a terrible funk right now and need to cocoon myself up in the house with lots of Christmas. |
Quote: Its usually around the 15th and its a crapshoot if the ornaments get on. sounds too familiar. If it were up to me, no tree, just decorator stuff. Already had started......but.........
Just had our first holiday mishap. I bought a tree top angel from Michaels for a separate function. After use brought it home and set atop a glass floral cylinder for "stability." Put two white rose and alstromeria arrangements on either side. All atop diningroom table. Well, the angel was top heavy on vase, Glacier got under table to scratch her spine, angel toppled onto an arrangement, vase fell over and spilled water onto table and chair. Didn't notice for at least an hour later |

One tree up and a second tree going up tomorrow. We have a new pup, Asia, with us this year, but so far she hasn't touched the tree. We'll see what happens when we put the tree up in the piano room. cross fingers. lol |
Just got home from getting ours. 11 foot Frazier Fir. Now the fun begins. |
