Thanksgiving Supper or Dinner?
 or just not used to terms used in the South.
Is your Thanksgiving meal in the afternoon or in the evening? I was curious to see if there were regional differences. We are having both!! |

| I hope a true Southerner chimes in and corrects me. I "think" if your biggest meal is before dark it is Supper, if it is after dark and it is your biggest meal it is dinner. However, you could have your main meal at lunch or so (supper) and then have a lighter meal that evening (dinner). I may still have this backwards.
I was flabergasted (MSP?) the first time I made my husband our biggest meal at lunch and later that evening he asked, "what's for dinner?" That was when we were young and could eat two big meals.

| Ha ha ha--to me, supper in general sounds antiquated. It's either a late lunch, or dinner (at dinnertime!)
I hate eating a big meal early in the day, so whenever I'm in charge I try and make T-day or Christmas DINNER as late as possible. It usually ends up between 5 and 7. I'm just not one for starving myself all day and gorging later on, so I eat regularly all day (and at T-day dinner too--I know, I'm no fun!). My dad, from the Midwest, I think had his mom call things supper, but he doesn't... |
| its okay I told them they were responsible for hors d'houvres so as lonmg as theya rrive before dinner it should be okay.
I always call our evening meal supper. my sister says we are old fashioend. no one else in the family does that - I am not sure when I started....... |

And you live in Virginia? That's where I went to college and fell in love with Southerners. I like the terms lunch and dinner better myself. Oops not logged in...Dee and Abi |
| Well, I won't get into the Supper/Dinner/Lunch debate. But, I am cooking two Thanksgiving meals this year. I will have one at my house around noon and as soon as we are through there, it is off to the hunting camp to cook for the guys. We will be eating there a little after dark. |
We are having Dinner. Why ? My daughter is going to her boyfriends parents to eat at noon (about 2.5 hrs away) she likes my cooking so begged me to have dinner late so she ould nibble there and eat here. So we are having dinner. again I am stuck with the whole meal but it will just be 5 so I guess thats not too bad  |
| When it gets done.......probably just before sundown, whenever that is.
I made gravlox the other day so he's in 7th heaven right now and I can keep him sated until turkey is done...as long as the bagels, cream cheese and capers last.....  |
| When I was little, grandparents had:
Breakfast: extremely early, still dark Lunch: coffee or tea with cookies. Mid morning Dinner: noon time meal, at noon Lunch: coffee or tea with a something like 1/2 sandwich. mid afternoon. Supper: evening meal usually after dark. That was confusing trying to set up family meals. As far as Thanksgiving goes. We have the grazing approach. Actual time for eating is set around noonish. But that is just the sit down part of the meal. But with the pre snacking food and the post snacking food we pretty much graze all day. |
| Protea that sounds like a lot of dishes! But probably healthier.
I'm in the same boat as Cindy...one of the boys is eating earlier with the girlfriend's family and he will be hungry again so we are eating in the evening as long as noone interferes with football everything is OK. We basically will be grazing also. |
| Ok- we used to always say Breakfast - Dinner - Supper.
Now we are more likely to refer to Breakfast- Lunch- Supper. We eat at 1:00--- and then graze while we play cards until 8 or 9ish.... |

We do breakfast, lunch and supper for everyday meals. Dinner is the big "special occasion meal", whatever time it is! |
| Supper is a word my dad uses but none of the rest of us ever picked it up.
We're eating at 3:30 so I guess that's more like "linner" than "dinner" though. |

| I grew up with Supper and Dinner..... My hubby had not heard of this till we were dating... he was soo sheltered. He never knew a pancake was a flapjack either...
We usually have supper... then seconds (or thirds) later in the day for dinner.... |

I've always called the evening meal supper, mid day meal lunch. The only time I used to refer to anything as dinner was thanksgiving or christmas dinner. LOL Maybe because normally "supper" was around 7pm or so. Holiday "dinners" are always served much earlier, around 4 or 5pm. Weird. |
