So - Which is the best? Dremel with interchangeable filing bands? If so, which Dremel? Pedi-Paws? Peticure? Since this is going to cost $50+ by the time it's all said and done, I'd rather get it right the first time. Help please! |

I think the best nail trimmer is the vet. |
dremels get too hot, if you do insist on using them use straight after a bath so the nail is a little softer but i wouldnt recomend it, there are many nail grinders on the market, designed for nails! failing that a good pair of nail clippers
or of course like butterscotch said the vet or a groomer! |
I am terrified of using the 'traditional' nail clippers... I cut our beagle's nails ONCE and got a little too close... that was the first and only time I ever did it!!
I usually have the vet or the groomer do it. My hubby bought me the Pedi-Paws. I use it now. I love it. I am just always super careful. i am a big wuss when it comes to accidentally hurting them! |
My husband has a dremel, so I ordered the Peticure Safe Guard attachment. Today was the first time I used it on Pepsi. He fought a bit, like he normally would with the regular nail clippers. The end result was perfectly groomed nails with no rough edges.
I had used it on both Rags and Lacey when I first got it. But Pepsi was the ultimate test for me, since he loves pawing me. I will never used regular nail clippers again. |
i will keep an eye on this post and start doing some research, as i'm going to invest in something similar to clip Obe's nails. |
We just picked up the Pedi-Paws at B.J.'s for about $20, but it makes so much noise I can't get near any of the dogs with it. Are the others noisy, too? |
I like use standard nail clippers then finish up using the Peticure attachment on a Dremel tool. I sometimes follow this up with just a standard cardboard nail file.
When using a Dremel tool or other electric nail grinder, you need to use it on a lower speed... from 5,000 but no more than 10,000 RPM. And don't apply much pressure or it may cause the dog pain if the nail to gets hot due to friction... allow the grinder to do the work. Grind one nail for a just a few seconds then go on to the next until you've done all 8 or 10 front nails. Then go back to the first one an repeat until the nails are to the appropriate length. When the front nails are done, move on to the back ones. One person recommends grinding continuously for no more than 3 seconds per nail... the Peticure site says from 3-5 seconds per nail http://www.peticure.com/demos.html . I do the 3-5 seconds and it works fine... some of mine will doze off during the process. |
I use the battery operated dremel when they are in full coat, when they are shaved down I cheat and use my regular dremel. they are used to the sound since we have used it since they were puppies - they still don't like having their nails done but they are used to the sound |

that is my husband's approach |
I actually have to say that I wasn't sure about Pedi Paws when I bought it, but I absolutely love it and it does the job very nicely and I don't have to worry about hurting Jenny. |
