I dont know whether to leave alone or try washing it she has made the pads sore by licking It doesn't worry her in the house but she favours it when she is running on it. |

It is better to keep the area between the pads free from fell as this matts very easily and will hurt the dog when walking, seems she has you where she wants you, it is better when you decide when you are finished and not summer.Cutting the fell between the pads does not hurt them at all but most sheepies have tickley feet or paws. |
I never thought about them being ticklish. Ok Summer look out am going to sort your paws out.... |
well just about got the matt out. she hated it, but it is really smelly don't know whether she has an infection. Put her whole paw in some warm salty water to clean it and most of it went over the kitchen floor. She has now gone off in a sulk! Is there an easy way of standing them or handling them when doing their underneath paws? Bearing in mind I dont have a grooming table? |
I think you did the right thing by washing in salt water, however, I would definitely take her to the vets to have it checked, it's amazing how vets can pull stuff out when you think there is nothing there, they will probably give her antibiotics too, it sounds like it might be infected if it smells.
Do you have a dining table? You can put a duvet or blankets on top to protect it and Summer. Get someone, preferably someone with dog experience, to help you hold Summer down on her side, gently but firmly. If you kind of spread yourself gently over her, and stroke her, she should relax. Be careful doing this though, as she may kick or try to bite. It's best if you have both hands free for trimming the hair between the pads, so having the extra person is ideal. Rufus' feet are very ticklish and he tries to pull his feet away, but I just don't let him by firmly holding on with one hand and trimming with the other while Greg holds him down. You will need scissors with a rounded end, for safety. Just cut the hair either so it is not sticking out between the pads, or you can cut it right back to the skin. I cut it right back, you will need to open the paws and get right in between the pads, a good time to check for nasties and matts. |
Thanks...I will have a go after dinner. Can use the dining table as long as she doesnt think it is an invitation to get up there! I have got some of those small round ended scissors its what I usually use.....will let you know what happens later |
She was so good. I layed her on her side in the front room on the carpet, and son stroked her head and she sort of went off in a trance. I got all the mucky hair out from the sore paw, and looked at it with a tiny powerful torch and I am sure it is just sore I couldnt see a seed or anything. I also did the other one and cut that much closer. I then put some antiseptic powder on for dogs. So keep your fingers crossed that it will be OK. Actually since I bathed it she wasn't licking it. Remind me not to where black fleecy trousers next time though they are covered in hair.. |
Great job! Sounds like she actually enjoyed it |
