My question is - Does anyone on here own one? and if so what sized travel crate do you use? I would opt for the easy option of a soft crate, but I think the pup may try to paw the windows. He seems happy in the space with the rear seats up, but I would prefer to keep the trim and the rear seats in best condition I can, I think if he got bored on a trip he may treat the car like he has one of the mats in the kitchen also the rear windows have printed heater elements on them and would easily be damaged. I have found a Three door dog crate on www.doggiesolutions.co.uk but I reckon the upper part may be to wide around the middle 36" depth by 36" wide by 27" high. Or do you think my money would be better spent making a bespoke crate to fit? |

The best place to buy a crate is from ebay. They are much, much cheaper, just check you are buying a premium product. We got ours on there and it is of a much higher quality than the ones in the pet stores, and we found a wider choice too. We started with a canvass one which Ru outgrew, now he has a metal galvanised one.
I take it the boot opens upwards? You can get the wire crates with a slanted edge so you can close the boot properly. There are a few local pet shops here where you can hire crates, by the week, maybe that would be worth a go, then you can be sure you get the best fit. Do you have a crate at home? Ours is the 42" and Ru is small, I think the slanted edge is probably your best option. Ru travels on the back seat with his seatbelt harness bought from Pets At Home. He either sleeps or looks out the back window at the cars. He barks and growls if trucks get too close |
Wire crates tend to rattle during travel and can scratch the interior of a car worse than a flailing dog. If you don't trust your dog in a cloth crate, a vari-kennnel (plastic) is another option.
If you can train your dog to be calm in the car, a barrier between the front seats and cargo area is a possibility. We've had good luck with car harnesses. Just depends on the dog. |
Cheers for the advice
Archie has a 42 inch crate (well the cats do!) which will fit when the rear seats are not required, but I am looking for something that can be more or less permenantly left in, so that whenever I have to pop out of town he can come with me, unless I need to use the car for more mundane human activities Seems a little judicious use of terms entered into google can do wonders http://www.hamsterbaskets.co.uk/dogcages.html More expensive than the generic cages etc but this will maximse the hounds comfort by providing maximum space, and importantly it will protect the inside of the car from those monster claws of his |
I don't get it. Is it just a weird shaped custom crate? |
Yes, but because the car is quite small compared to the likes of an SUV or large people carrier the internal dimensions limit what normal crates will fit and give plenty of room |
But why would you pay that much when you can get this one for £43? |
Very late update.
In the end I simply got the genuine A4 Dog guard off ebay 2nd hand and in new condition. Spending silly money, well was just silly, Archie seems to be happy in the back - so far he hasn't eaten any of the car trim! Only relatively short journies so far. Although I'll need a step to help him in and out, the back of the A4 is a little high. |
