So - any good over the counter waterless shampoo recommendations. Makes me realized I should always keep a bottle of the good stuff at home. Vet said to just brush out but I am thinking he will stink. The poor guy is having a tuff go of it lately. Hernia repair, neuter, mirochipping, and then starting supplements for CHD. I think that is what caused the accident in the kennel. Becky - sorry I am not signed in. |

Dry it and brush it as recommended. A bit of corn starch or baby powder may help. The smell is reduced greatly when dry. Hang in there, he's got to heal first. Your worrying isn't helping. Be calm, he'll be calm. Extra lovin' never hurt either as long as you don't excite him. He's hurting, he needs compassion more than he needs to be perfectly clean. In a couple of weeks you can suds away. |
If the feces is in the wound I'd call the Vet back. It can't be good to have stool in an open wound. Even if you put him in the shower and gently rinse it off, and put an antibacterial over it.
How old is the wound? |
You can also try buying the doggie wipes. They are thicker than baby wipes. I use them regularly and they help so much with quick clean-ups. |
Thankks for the advice! I had asked the vet how to keep up the wound if when I asked it I could bath him.
He has been such a good boy about everything - he is just not himself yet. Pet store had a waterless shampoo by Pet Head - pet verison of Bead Head. It was the biggest bottle so I went with it. I am not sure how it works but it smells good. |
Sorry to hear, it's hard when you are not allowed to bath them yet and not so unusual the runs after an aneasthetic.
Get a bucket or container of warm water and just put a small dot of nice smelling shampoo init, get a flannel and wet it in the bucket and carefully sponge the area till all the goobies are out making sure not to get his surgical area wet, then get a towel and gently just towel off the back of him. Any area with muck still in the coat, take a comb and just run it through that area and it should release it from the coat then sponge again and rub gently with a towel. I would be wary of using powder or cornstarch as it might get into the surgery area so just a sponge bath to freshen him up till you can bath him properly. |

I thought about that when I wrote it but hoped she'd be careful. When my guys have surgery the vet instructs us to carefully clean the inscision and stitches with warm water, just dabbing and drying immediately. Keep it clean. On open wounds that will close by themselves (Like Harry was doing running thru the hedges) we had to put warm moist compresses on the wound to keep it soft.......somewhat different than surgical inscisions. |
