My sad day

I went on an ambulance call yesterday. Not much I could do, a women (about my age) died in her sleep. The family discovered her and there wasn't much for me to do but confirm death and wait for the Coroner.

What was sad was that the women raised Shih-Tuz's (sp?) and when I arrived at the home the humans were in another room, unable to bear being in the same room with the body. But the 6 puppies (of various ages) were up on the bed sitting guard with their owner.

Often when I have a patient with dogs the dogs will bark and growl and try to protect their owner. It was as if these pups KNEW she was gone, not one of them made a single sound but sat on the bed watching me do what I needed to do in absolute silence looking so sad, it was heartbreaking. It was as if they knew!!

I've always thought they knew those type of things. It just seems like they can read all of our emotions and know how to react to them. Which is why I think they make such good 'therapy' dogs. They're amazing ceatures!
Sorry you lost a patient.
That would completely break my heart to see. I don't know how you do it! Mr. J is looking at being a volunteer EMT, and I don't think he could handle it!!!
Oh, that is sad. :(
It's bittersweet--their master died, yet they remain loyal. Do you know what will happen to the dogs?
Actually, before the end of the day I had received a forwarded email from the family saying they were looking for homes for the animals. The women was quite an animal lover and there are cows, horses, dogs, cats and even a parrott that need a home.
A client told me when her husband died in his sleep their poodle started barking. This woke the lady to find her husband dead. She said the dog's actions more difficult to handle than her ailing husband's passing. To say the least the dog had a hard time with his master's passing.

Why did the dog bark........did he no longer hear his master's breathing or heart beat? Or was it something else?
:(

I haven't often wondered what a dog does when their owner dies away from home. Do they just keep waiting for them to come home? I realize after time they forget about them but I always wondered about those days following death.
I will never forget the sad face of one of the dogs in paticular, he was a little brown pup with big brown eyes who just sat there by his masters head looking at me as if to say DO SOMETHING.
That is just too sad
How sad for you I know it will stay embedded in your heart and mind. When my dad died they had an airdale (He died at the hospital) she looked and waited for him. She actually pushed the mattress off the boxspring looking for him because his scent was on the mattress and she could not find him She looked for him till the day she died. I hope all the animals find good homes.
How sad
Just remember what dog spelled backwards is.
I have asthma and sometimes don't breathe properly at night (I can sleep through anything). I can't tell you how many times I have woken up to a cold nose in my face and later my husband will say - yeah you were breathing awfully last night. I think they do get attuned to your breathing.
That is so sad...............
My Dad used to come down my house 3 times a week to see the children after school. He used to stay a coup;e of hours and then I would nip him home in the car. It was a Wednesday he came down as usual, and the dogs (2 yorkies) always sat with him. My eldest dog sat on his lap and kept looking at him and licking him. I remember saying to Dad she wont leave you alone today. When I took Dad home (only a couple of streets away) he said as he got out of my car something to the effect that this isn't much of a life being old and tired. He died next morning. I am sure my dog could sense something.
