I GUESS MY QUESTIONS ARE THESE: DO THEY ALL HAVE A SENSE OF HUMOR?? WILL HE EVER "HEEL"?? HE COMES AND HEELS BUT DOESN'T STAY ON HEEL. I KNOW ITS NOT IN HIS INSTINCT, BUT WOULD BE NICE. I HAVE FALLEN IN LOVE AGAIN |
|
congrats on your new dog!!
they do have a sense of humor, don't they. they can and do learn to heel, not so much mine bit I have seen them do so |
THE FUNNIEST THING I'VE SEEN HIM DO IS; HIS 'SIGNIFICANT OTHER" IS A MINI SCHNAUZER. WHEN WE BROUGHT HIM HOME IN MARCH THEY WERE THE SAME SIZE. WE HAVE A GROUND LEVEL BIRD BATH THE SCHNAUZER WOULD DRINK OUT OF UNTIL RALPH LEARNED HOW TO SCARE HER AND MAKE HER FALL INTO THE WATER AND HE WOULD PRANCE BACK TO THE HOUSE ALL PROUD OF HIMSELF. |
Congratulations...YES!! They have a great sense of humor and are full of joy!!! Alot of us can't stop at just one!!!! I love your pictures of Ralphie!!! He is a cutie!!! |
Congrats on your new boy the pics are great. Like the muddy pic, it doesn't take them long at all to muddy. A sense of humor like no other dog I've been around. |
Welcome to the wonderful world of Sheepdog ownership (if you can call it that). And yes, they are all that funny and wonderful. At least, all the ones I've met. I even had some aggression issues with mine, and they are STILL that funny sweet and loving. I think its part of the breeds nature.
Heeling. Wooo was that tough for us. My Luna took to it right away, once I showed her properly how to do it, and she understood. As a result; our walks are some of my favorite time spent with her. Her sister Tonks, on the other hand, is still a bit of a heeling challenge. She'd rather "lead" than "heel". But she's doing better at it now than she was 8 months ago when we started working on it. I would suggest trying several different approaches. The first way we were shown to teach our girls to Heel simply didn't work. They didn't understand what we wanted from them. Can anyone offer up some variations on instruction? Our first trainers had us hold the girls on a short leash, at our side, with a tasty treat dangling above their noses. But not being all that treat-driven, my girls really didn't care much for this method. I know someone at one point recommended a book specifically on heeling. Can anyone recall what it was? Was it this one link edit: I checked out your photos... YOUR RALPH LOOKS JUST LIKE MY TONKS!!!! |
HaHa! Welcome!
Ralph sounds like a typical jokester Sheepie! |
So happy for you and your first sheepie ...... mine is 12 weeks and has such a character inbetween the biting barking and jumping ..like a split personality when the puppy mood sets in. She is my third dog and I loved them all but I am also in love again. Muffy just drops on the floor to have tummy rubs and my heart melts!! jan xx |
Welcome! Ralph sounds like a great sheepie! |
Congrats on your new found friend. Sheepies definitely have their own personalities. They are great dogs. |
Be prepared to laugh so hard you almost (or do) cry! Our big-little girl is the goofiest dog we have ever had or seen. I am amazed every time I am stressed out and I pull-up to our house seeing Maggie in her usual look-out spot on the couch.
She is also EXTREMELY stubborn, the "heel" command is the hardest one for her to learn....and she hasn't quite got it yet, we aren't sure she ever will. Congratulations on finding your new love and the OES forum! Enjoy the butt wiggles!!! |
Congratulations , Ralphie looks like a regular OES guy |
What a handsome fellow ( esp. the mud pic ), we all love those.
He sounds like he has a perfect, honery personality....which we all love, if we'll admit to it. Sounds like you found a purr-fect friend. BYW: Chauncey doesn't heal, but he more than makes up for it by being a goof. |
Heel
is that the thing at the back of a shoe at the bottom? Archie will heel for all of 3 seconds, he comes to heel I say good boy and off he goes again! They are indeed big softies |
Archies Slave wrote: Archie will heel for all of 3 seconds, he comes to heel I say good boy and off he goes again! Thats my bad girl Tonks too! Its like the minute I praise her, it means she accomplished it successfully, so doesn't have to do it anymore. It kills me, but once she heels, I learned I can't praise her for it, or she'll break the heel!!! |
THANKS TO ALL FOR YOUR THOUGHTS AND WELL WISHES FOR THE 'BOY"..
HE FOUND HIS 'BIG BOY' VOICE LAST NIGHT WHEN A DEER WANTED TO COME THRU THE YARD. IT SCARED EVEN HIM. THANKS AGAIN RALPH AND HIS FAMILY |
Congrats on the new addition. We are now on #4, Hannah, 10 months old. They all have their own personalties, and I don't think I EVER got one to heel yet. Oh well, I'll keep trying |
after the holidays would you be interested in a play date?? i see you live in clark, we're in fair haven ( near red bank)
ralph and family |
