bad day, I have jury duty

I know, it's my civil duty and all that and it's only once a year that they call me, but what a pain in my butt. Sit and wait. I took the train in so I wouldn't have to find parking too.... It was really crowded, I could hardly find a parking spot at my station and stood the whole way in to Oakland. I couldn't bring my knitting and I'm not currently reading anything, so I lugged my laptop in...

:D I have my AAA bail certificate, I can come over and bail you out. :D

Had jury duty a few months ago, almost got picked-was in
the jury box. The lawyers got to ask questions of us and
next thing you know I am out of the box.

Guess they did not want a nurse on the trial,it was a medical
issue trial. Can not get recalled until 3 years from now.

Actually, I would not have minded a trial. Would have been
interesting.

Good luck today.
If I ever get picked for jury duty, it better be a juicy criminal case. No civil stuff for me. Fortunately the county courthouse is just around the corner from work. I think I'd leave the country if I got called for federal grand jury duty. Is that the one you have to go one day a week for a year?
Couple of years ago I went from Fed jury to Grand Jury then to Metro court, bam, bam bam. By far the best was Grand Jury, tho 3 months, a few days a week, we didn't have to decide guilt or innocence just if the case should go to trial. I hated having to be on a jury. First cased was a hung jury, another was a drug dealer just before Christmas, third was a case I wasn't in the majority with my fellow jurors. I came away with a bad feeling towards those on trial and qestions about some fellow jurors ability to think.
I am jealous.
I have never gotten called for jury duty. Never at all. Both my parents have - tons of times.
I think it would be kind of interesting. I would love a little time to read too!
I have never been called for Jury Duty either.

I am sorry Leslie. I know it is a LOT of sitting and waiting.
I've been called once, but I wasn't empanelled. We have a one day or one trial system here, so it was one day of waiting around until after lunch then we were outta there.

You'd think they'd provide for juror parking, y'know?
well, keep your fingers crossed that I make a lousy first impression on Wednesday. I am up for Jury selection and I hope they really don't like me......
I always get a notice for duty, but it goes to my mom's house for some reason, and its always from a state that we just moved from. I've gotten at least one every year, but never had to go, lol. One of these days it will catch up with me, probably the next time we move, since we will be in AZ for three years.
My mother is 87 and has NEVER been called for jury duty! Nobody has an answer as from where names are culled--could be driver's license or voter's registration or who know what. But she's lived in the same city all her life and never been called.
We were told the list iis made from driver's license, ID cards (in lieu of driver's license) AND voter registration. The age limit is 70, after that you have an automatic out, but you have to tell them and if you want, you can serve anyway. Seniors appreciate being able to still serve, if they can get to the court house. I served with a guy in a motorized cart and he'd take the bus. If we were running late, he'd put that cart into overdrive to get to the bus stop.

Husband and several friends have gotten out by telling them they had back surgery and cannot sit for long periods.......all true too.

What is this one time and you are off? Must be bigger population base. Metro Court we are on for 10 days, regardless whether you have been empanneled. I don't remember Federal Court.....also 10 days??? Grand Jury was 3 days a week for 3 months, but if they saw cases were slowing down, they'd have you call the night before to learn if your group would be needed. They usually had 2 groups working at a time. One country with lower population used to hold their Grand Jury at night, but they've grown rapidly lately, I suspect they are now daytime too.

In NY it used to be voter registration. some people actually did not register to vote to avoid jury duty. they expanded the pool a few years ago to dl, utility bills etc so more people would/could be called.
That stinks! Last time, I had school as my excuse. I wouldn't want it. Hope they don't pick you!

like voting - it is something we should (read that SHOULD) be happy to do. without the jury system where do we get a trial by a jury of our peers?

Not convenient, but worth the sacrifice maybe (says Kerry who for some reason never gets picked on a jury  )
I agree, it is our civil duty and I too would like to be tried by my peers. The reality is that I'm not sympathetic to some thug who shot and killed someone for his money or drugs. 8O 8O I don't know the facts of the case, I do know its murder, and not self defense.

So I ask? Am I truely his peer? I have a huge issue with the youth of the day, who think that if you have something that they want, it's quite alright to take it... Rather than work for what they want.

I really don't think this cat wants me on his jury, I have already drawn a conclusion, as he sat in the court room laughing and joking with his attorney, I thought to my self, if I was innocent, I would be so scared and serious and would not be joking around with my attorney but focused on what was going on. Besides the fact that due to a huge project at work, we are short handed and it is esssential that I'm there. I would not lie to get off of the jury, but I do hope they find someone else to serve.

stepping off of 8) my 8) soap box...

Next?
I also think it's a civil responsbility, and would gladly do it. The problem is I have a Judge Judy mentality, and an even worse sense of humor for thugs, rapist, drug dealers, murder's...etc...
You'd better have a REALLY good alibi

Maryland also used voter registration forms for their jury pool, until people stopped registering and contacted the registrar to remove their names. Now MD uses the driver's license rolls for the jury pool.
In Massachusetts they use the census which is conducted annually by cities and towns.
I've been called twice for jury duty. I went..but I didn't have to be happy about it.

The first time was reserve, the first time I called I was told to come in and I was picked for a jury for a criminal case first off and that lasted a week. The second was for three days and again I was picked for a jury right away and this one also lasted a week. This one was civil and BORING!

The only good thing about it is that my job pays me my regular wage when I'm there.
Re: Peers

They don't mean people of the same race, sex, economic level, etc tho that's what many media or civil right people want to you believe.

It is in opposition to a professional jury system where the jurors are trained in the law.........like a jury of attorneys and judges. Remember these laws were written not long after leaving the English system of the 1700's.

Peers simply means us commoners, not society equals.
woo hoo! they didn't pick me. Done for a year
Did they validate your parking?? Congrats, but I think you would have enjoyed it.
I was called for jury duty a few times. Most of the time I was a student and could get out of it, but I ended up going once. I was in the jury selection area and they were asking questions and telling the history of the case and one lawyer asked if anyone had anything to say and I raised my hand and said I already knew who I felt was guilty--I was NOT picked for that jury, lol
