Rude, Rude, Rude.....

Pointless story but I'll tell it anyways really quick......I had both of the fur children with me on a car ride. Naturally they like to stick their heads out of the window. Some guy came up to the truck (while I'm parked in a spot) with his child and said look at that big ugly dog in the window knowing I was looking at him. Then the guy started talking to me and he asked what breed it was. This guy had the nerve to start petting Cozette by putting his hand into my truck window. He said damn they are ugly dogs, and I told him to get the hell away from my truck and that he had no taste and was rude.....lol

   Boy that felt good...

Did anyone ever encounter someone just so blatently rude that you are ALMOST surprised???

I was at the vet's one day and had both my sheepies. This guy was sitting there with his dog, a shorthaired mid sized breed. The guy was sprawled out across the entire bench, and had this air of "I own the place" oozing out of him.

The guy was beyond meticulously groomed. It was absurd. Despite being sprawled, he was clearly self posed as well. His dog sat perfectly still (to the extreme) and it was clear that it was all about appearances for him (the guy...I just felt sorry for the dog).

He looked at me, and slowly looked at each of my dogs. Then he sat up, pulled his arms and legs in (as if my furry beasts were contagious) and said loudly, "So, like, do those dogs shed?"

I said, "Yes, of course they do. All living things shed."

"My dog doesn't."

There was no point in debating it. I said something like, "That's nice."

He stretched back out and looked away. Clearly I had been dismissed. As I walked away, thinking, what a jerk, he said (to the room not to me), "Why would anyone want a dog like that? Her house must be covered with fur. Gross."

I didn't go back and say anything of course, but I was fuming. Luckily, we're very well loved at our clinic, and about ten vet techs came flying out from behind the desk to explain to him how my dogs were about the nicest dogs in the world and that good people don't sweat a few hairs.

Clearly, he wasn't "good people."

Yep, he caught me off guard with his rudeness, but the good part was that others took him down for me. Our vet had heard this, and said to me (when I met him in the exam room). "Well, remember, I've told you before, you guys are in the top three percent of pet owners. Clearly many others aren't." (Referring to the level of care our dogs get.)

We smiled and let it go. I still think he was a flaming jerk though.
My story is about my 2 legged kids.Having more boys than most people, before my daughter,I was always copping rudeness about how bad my life must be,cursed with all those boys, one day I was just over it and a "friend" loudly said,in a party in front of 50 people,"You poor thing,I would kill myself if I had gotten more than one boy" so I just couldnt let it go,I said "Yes,I've met your son,I am not surprised".
I was walking Ru one day and happened to pass some builders working on a house. They had a young boy with them which I took to be the son of one of them. "Eeurgh! Look at that dog!" shouted the boy. I thought much the same about the brat. The father figure came forward and started asking questions about him.. annoying questions.. first up was "How much was that?" to which I said he was a present, I didn't want to tell them because I felt they might follow me and steal him, their attitude was giving me very bad vibes. The boy laughed and sneered. The man then said "where did you get it from?" I replied I didn't know as "it", who in fact is a "he", was a present.
The boy squealed out "What's it mixed with?" I said "Nothing, he's a pure breed" To which both of them burst into cackles of laughter.
I walked away, taking a very indirect route home hoping I hadn't been followed and locked all the doors when I got there

Yes, my MIL heard that alot.
My husband's family consists of 8 kids - 7 boys and one girl!
There were 5 boys, then the girl, then 2 more boys. :D

Very good response!
The guy was obviously an idiot redneck. Forget the incident.

As OES owners, we're all so accustomed to people saying nice things about our dogs. Still, there was one event where I did threaten to strangle a kid for continuously calling Nelson a name I didn't like...
I've only had good remarks re my OES but once in a hockey rink I was sitting beside this horrible woman and all she could do was to knock the other young boys on our sons team, her son was the best, her son was the whole team according to her ,and her son thought he was the be all end all of the team, got the attitude from his mom I guess when up this young fellow came to tell his mom he had forgotten his jock, Being the nasty person I am I reached into my pocket handed him a dime and said ... this should do, Oh and I was wearing lipstick :D

Way to go!!!!!!!! Some people have NO taste and NO tact. I am glad you got a zinger off and it made you feel better!!!! What a complete JERK!!!!

(not to digress...but one time a parking attendant approached my car while I was parking to go to a Therapy event...he was about to put his hand through the back window to pet Pearl and before I could say anything...shelunged, growled and barked...He backed off real FAST!!!! NEVER before or since has she ever done THAT!!

I sure wish you had Pearl with you!!!!!   )
Geez!! Some people!!

Thankfully, I've never had that happen to me. I did have a little boy, about five years old, dressed in overalls, say to me once, after looking them over carefully and in a tone that showed he'd given it great consideration for a five year old, that my dogs just had "too much hair". He clearly was unimpressed and his mom was embarassed by his comment as she was ohhing and ahhing over them. I found it amusing.
only in fla 8)

Now I just MUST know!
He called him "Gigantor" because he's a big dog. I politely told the kid that his name was Nelson and that I'd have to strangle him with the leash if he didn't shut up.

Guess I'm showing my age because I had no clue what Gigantor was until later. The kid was just annoying so it didn't really matter what he called him, I would have still wanted to strangle him.
(no, I don't have kids, thank God!)
I'm sure the guy was ugly himself.

I love that you're still bummed about Gigantor, lol!

Yeah, I remember stuff like that. Grrrrrrrrrrr!

Thanks for explaining what a Gigantor is. You're like the kid I never had.
okay so give....what the heck is a gigantor????????
.....what is it?????

I would have cracked up if someone called my dog Gigantor, I love robots!!

I met someone once with my first OES and she called him Chewbacca.

Chewbacca must come to mind frequently for people, since a friend did painting of Frank as Chewbacca years later -

But I would much prefer them to be Abominable Snowmen or Yeti's. :D

Sorry M, about your run in with the rude people. We need to train them to bite on command!
No, I don't have kids either, and I probably would have said the same thing Nita....gggrrrr...... I don't like when kids drag things onnn and onnnn to the point where it's like ENOUGH!!! I completely understand how you felt....

LOL @ the redneck and "only in florida" comment....
All hail the 'no kids' ethic. Although I know the people who have kids on here would never let them get like that, being lovely people AND sheepie lovers.

OK so wth is a Giganticthingymejig? Must be a dinosaur or something?

I'm glad I just finished my coffee in time for the abominable snowsheepie pic
Well I LOVE the Chewbacca!!
:clappurple: :clappurple:

For obvious reasons........
I am confused - we have this topic where we are insulted because a person who was rude, said he didn't admire our dogs and we have the puppy for Obamas topic where we are cringing at the thought that the dogs might be discovered as desirable? can't have it both ways people.

I personally don't care what other people think about my dogs - I don't choose family members based on popularity.
I think it was the fact that he was a surprise a-hole. Like he acted like he was going to be nice and then BOOM, a-hole.

We're talking about two totally different things here. A person with rude remarks to say about anything, especially to a total stranger, is out of line.

Not promoting an OES as the "presidential puppy pick" keeps the uneducated public from buying up dogs that they have no business with. How many times have you been approached by people who only care how much OES eat or do they shed? Or, how much did you pay for your dog? These aren't the people I encourage to get an Old English Sheepdog. Rarely do these people ask important questions about the breed, such as what the grooming requirements, are they difficult to train, etc..

I'm with you. And in my case any rudeness comes from family. The last time Sybil visited my folks (note: almost 2 years passed until she was invited again...  8) ), my father, taking note that her sister's name is Macy, "renamed" her K-Mart.

For two years now I've had to listen to "So, how's K-mart doing these days?" :P

I've never had anyone non-family say anything rude about my dogs, but my "pet-peeve" is having to listen to the endless gushing. Usually from other (non-OES  ) dog people and then you have to try to say something nice in return about their dogs, and really, I don't much care what they think about my dogs and I don't think it's relevant what I think about theirs.

Now, if their dog is very well-trained we at least have something to talk about. Rarely do I see a dog I think is cute that isn't an OES and, frankly, not all OES are all that cute either when you get right down to it, but who cares?

It's like they say at dog shows: no matter what, you always go home with the best dog there: yours!!

Kristine,
You've seen an OES that wasn't cute.......IMPOSSIBLE !!8) :hearts: :hearts: :aww:

I've seem some who were so ugly they were cute. In fact, I bred one  (He has rosebud ears which I cannot stand - ugh!) Never mind, grow some hair on his head and focus on his better attributes like his big, happy grin and his butt tucking enthusiatsic figure eight happy runs 8) People who don't know the breed well all adore him 8O

After we depelted a certain rescue I told my vet i was going to drive home and apologize to Che for calling him the ugliest OES ever born. Rescue had airplane ears attached to virtually no head and looked like he was ready for take off at any minute

Cute is relative I guess

having been there - asking stupid questions - I think people may not know what to ask. lets be a little more generous with others and perhaps we can find some great new OES owners.

I agree stupid is stupid and rude is rude, but a lot of this post was morphing into a "how can anybody think my dog isn't adorable" thread.

I mentioned somewhere that this topic (first dog) got ugly on the Lagotto list and two people went to moderated status. The Newf list had a similar conversation going. there is a commonality emerging, breed pepole are beginning to act like they can and should control who gets to own their breed, and the list of potential owners is shrinking. this approach only encourages more BYBs and puppy mills. if a person is afraid to ask a stupid question from a "good" breeder they are going to go somewhere they are more comfortable.
There was a lady who in a mean tone said, I bet your dog sheds a lot. I just replied, yes he has hair just like you and smiled.

**** :? I'd like to be perfectly clear and state I started this thread because I had an altercation with a rude man....a very rude man. The thread was about "rude people." It did have to do with my dogs, but I don't care what the man thought about my dogs. I take it with a grain of salt. I just thought he had absolutely no manners and was really obnoxious sticking his hand into my truck. His behavior was way out of line with a little child with him. Cussing and all..... What in the heck does that have to do with the Obama's picking a puppy??? :? ******

Michelina~ (I Dream of Sheepie) for some reason my cookies aren't working at the moment...sorry

Thanks for getting things back on track, Michelina :) It didn't make sense to me why the two topics were brought up here in the first place. That other stuff was an entirely different thread.

I don't care what people say about me or my dogs but civilized people don't go sticking their hands into cars without the owner's permission. The kid that was badgering Nelson and I came by his rudeness naturally. His mother was even worse than he was.
