Anyway, I ended up making contact with this breeder and we made a time to meet and for me to get the 2 month old pup.I was freaked out thinking I would get some bad bred dog, or whatever. Well the lady showed up in a nice truck with Abbey. She is beautiful and 13 months old now. We are working toward Therapy dog training. I lost touch with the breeder, she never called me back. She did give me info aboutt he parents, shots (verified by the vet), etc. Any chance to get these papers from AKC? What do you think? She has not returned any of my calls. Abbey has been fixed, so it is not for the breeding. I have just never had a papered dog and thought it would be neat to look up and know the history of her. This is Abbey in all my pictures. She's great! |

If you have the parents' names, that's all you need to start looking up the history. There are a few web sites that trace pedigrees back pretty well. I had a lot of luck using this one:
http://edoes.gbwebs.com/stamidx.htm Papers are really just that-- papers. It's the pedigree that matters. |
you can also probably get an ILP if you want to compete in AKC performance events at anytime - like agility, rally etc |
color me ignorant: what is an ILP? |

ILP stands for Indefinite Listing Privelege. It is a version of a limited registration through AKC. It is used when you have a purebred (or looks close enough to pass!) and allows you to do every AKC dog sport and title - except conformation. Very handy for rescues! My basset Simon has an ILP. I am pretty sure he was registered, but our rescue does not pass that info along. For confidentiality to the previous owners, as well as giving the dog a fresh new start in life. The ILP is now being transitioned into PAL...the exact wording of the acronym escapes me, and the AKC site seems to be down at the moment. But you get the idea! edit - the site is working now! it stands for Purebred Alternative Listing. It also includes some purebreds that aren't AKC registerable now too. Like my rat terrier Riley! Here is a link to some of the PAL registerable breeds: http://www.akc.org/reg/fss_companion_events.cfm |
thanks Dawn - I knew there was some transition going on but I am currently fighting bronchitis so not thinking quite so clearly. |

Jill - Eduardo adds dogs (US ones at least) based on their being publicly listed for some reason (they finished a title, usually, or were listed in show results, perhaps) Probably not the best source in this specific case since Abbey's parents probably wouldn't have shown up on his radar. She can try www.furcertain.com because I've added some US dogs outside of the show lines thanks to the help (often) of people on this forum. Still a long shot though since there aren't that many. What she needs to know is the parents' registered names or registration numbers. Then she can go to the AKC site and request copies of their respective pedigrees if it's pedigree into she wants: Got to www.akc.org - click on Store - create an account, and she can save herself some $$ and time and merely request the online research pedigrees instead of the certified ones, since it's just info she needs. Without a registration slip from the breeder - assuming Abby was never individually registered but the breeder may have applied for litter registrations - it's unlikely she can get her AKC registered, but as already noted, she can get her ILP/PAL # if she wants to compete in performance events: http://www.akc.org/reg/ilpex.cfm I've helped a couple of people do so with rescue dogs. Not hard at all. Kristine |
