Jasper Has Hip Dysplasia

Jasper was to the vets today for neuter and repair of his hernia. We had noticed that Jasper just walked differently than Miley. We were not sure if he was just clumsy or if something else was wrong.

So while Jasper was under anesthesia we had early x-rays done. The results were not good. While he is young the vet thinks there is a high probably he will have server hip dysplasia.

I will be doing lots of reading of old posts but right now I feel sad for him. He is such a sweet happy little guy. My hubby picked him up from the vets and was the first to get the news. When I got home I knew the results without asking. Randy was only the floor just snuggling him. The hard part is we put our Max down 2 years ago because of serve arthritis. Max was falling down and in lots of pain before we help him to the bridge. So we have an idea of the pain Jasper will have. This is going to be hard to do emotionally.

I know that there is a lot of excellent advice here and I will be doing my share of research. But today I just want to say – Oh crap!

Oh crap is right! I am so sorry. Still, there is loads that can be done to help your youngster and sadly many people on the forum can tell you all about it. . .
Aw, I'm sorry to hear that :( . Lots of great advice here from many who have dealt with it, I wish you luck!
Aw that is too bad. Sorry about that.
Sorry to hear about Jasper and the HD. :(
I am so sorry about Jasper....
I would like to share that we have a foster/lifer
Paddington...
We have had him for 2 1/5 years and he has severe hip
dysplasia at the age of 13~

Thank you for having Jasper in your care.....
I am sure he will surprise you!
Bum thats bad news. At least you are prepared and he is in a good home where he will be loved...xx
So sorry .....poor Jasper!!!!
I'm so very sorry that Jasper has HD. But since he was diagnosed at a young age so there are more preventative things you can do. Keep him lean so no extra weight pressure on his hip joints, keep him exercised so that the muscles surrounding the hip joint can support him when his hips get worse. This will also help if he ever has to have surgery - the muscles will already be toned enough to help him recuperate. Swimming is an EXCELLENT exercise for that. Start him on a chondroitin/glucosamine supplement.

I feel for you. Our Drez wasn't diagnosed until she was almost 12 and although we did what we could, including surgery, she spent the last year or so of her life in pain. Good luck, and give that little boy a big hug from me.
Sorry to hear about Jasper.
oh so very sorry
I'm really sorry to hear that. Like Chris said, at least you know and you can work on things to make his life easier and more comfortable. Maybe he'll be a good candidate for surgery?
Poor Jasper. Barney too was diagnosed while being neutered, and it's been very helpful to us to know what we should be doing to ensure he stays as healthy as long as he can, before having to resort to more invasive medical procedures. Good luck to you guys, and hopefully he'll be slow to progress...
Hugs :ghug: Sorry to hear the news. :(

Google there is a lot of info here to read through to hopefully help jasper & you cope with a good management plan for the future.
I am sorry to hear about Jasper. Guinness was just diagnosed maybe we can learn together. Hugs to you both.
Oh Becky, I'm sorry to hear about Jasper. There is lots of good info out there and good info given here.

Take him to the teaching vet school in Madison, close to you. They can evalulate him and give the best advice on what to do. I was there with Taylor years ago and though they were a bit pushy I found there advice very helpful.
Thanks for your support!

When we meet with the vet to have stiches removed I want to go with my list of questions and ideas for supplements. So today I started researching. First item on the list was nutritional supplements - there are lots to choose from. I need to find one that is okay for pups as Jasper is 6 months (we think). If anyone has recommendations for a really young dog please let me know.

Next on my list to research is food. He is a really hungry puppy but we want to keep the weight off. So I was thinking about adding fresh veggies (I thought it was beans) to his diet to fill him up but keep calories down. My vet wants to stay on puppy food but I think we should swithch to a good adult verison. I was planning on feeding the same as Miley - but her food has a high caloried content (salmon and sweet potatoe due to her allergies), which probably would not be the best. So we will have separate dog food - no big deal.

We walk morning and night so I think that should be good on the exercise department.

Good news is Jasper does not show any signs except a very clumbsy gait. He will happly rough house with Miley. They tend to jump the steps to the yard so I will have to put a stop to that.

I was wondering if in the future sits and downs will become more difficult for him. We are in basic training mode with him so I was thinking of really working on a stand stay. It is not a command I use very much but I am thinking it might come in hand with him. I want to set the long term ground rules now for things that will help him later in life. Like and controlled way on to/ off of the grooming table.

I was really sad yesterday. Today I am much better. I think it is good that we know now so we can help with preventative measures.
