I don't know that it is a matter of obedience training, though that is never a bad idea, here. My Guinevere is aggressive when she is walking and sees another dog, but seems to do ok if they come into her yard to play. Have you tried that? Maybe if Max sees the dog on his own turf he will be a bit less likely to "go off." You might try it, making sure that you take the lead, petting the other dog, while also petting Max, to let him know there is no threat to him or you. And maybe just let them "work it out" a bit - though I do understand your concern of a "big" dog hurting a "little dog" the little ones are pretty resiliant, and will only let things go so far before they run for shelter. Of course, the key is to get the other dog owner involved in this as well. Make sure you both have control over your dogs, and keep an eye on them the first meeting and see what happens.
Just some thoughts. Hope this helps in some way. Good luck! Cheers! Guinevere's Dad, Kevin Z. |
Kevin, thank you for your answer. But the neighbor and I have tried to introduce them slowly and on leads. They even begin to play, then out of nowhere Max will snap at the puppy. The neighbor and I like to go to the park together, but now are afraid to walk the dogs together. She says she is also concerned that Max will also turn on her children which he has never shown any agression too. Usually now when her dog is out mine in in just to ease the fears that have come up. |
