My girl Molly's coat is turning brown from the sun. Does anyone know of an ultra violet protection product that I can either add to her rinse water when I bathe her or add to a spray bottle and atomize onto her when grooming? Molly's mum. |

how old is she? puppy coats have more of a tendancy to turn brown in the sun |
Because we were taking Maggie out with us for all-day excursions on the boat and for baseball games (there were over 45!), the vet suggested UVet sunscreen, "clean and gentle protection." At first, I thought it would stay greasy, but after it was absorbed, it was like she didn't have anything on.
At first I wasn't really prepared for applying sunscreen to my dog, but once I got used to it, it wasn't so bad. And you are applying it to their skin AND fur. Now that her hair is longer, I think that it could be more difficult, but we will be taking on that task when we visit my parents in Florida for a week over Christmas. I am not going to lie, but I would have NEVER thought about putting sunscreen on my dog until a friend of mine had to put her their dog to sleep after 3 surgeries failed to remove an aggressive skin cancer. He was more susceptible because of his white fur and "fair" shin. Now, I am NOT saying that all dogs with white fur have fair skin and can get cancer, but it made me think about the type of humans that have to wear sunscreen and why wouldn't it be different for dogs that have lighter fur. There are also some pet bug-repellent that has SPF in it too. Whatever you choose, lotion or spray, I think it is a thing to sunscreen your dog! |
Hello both Wendy & Kerry,
Many thanks for your response. Firstly, Molly is 3 1/2 years old. This is the first summer that I have struck this problem. Thats what mystifies me. We live in a sub tropical climate and I keep Molly in full coat all year as I work her in obedience trials. Wendy. I liked your idea of the bug spray with a u v element to it. We are leaving thismorning for a weeks holiday at a seaside unit (who allow dogs inside) so will visit the local chemist up there to see which one has the strongest protection to it and give that a go. Couldn't even contemplate using a cream as she has a very profuse coat. I live in Queensland Australia, but imported Molly from New Zealand as its illegal to dock the tails here and I refuse to have one with a tail. Will get back with my success/failure for this problem when we get home again. Again. Many thanks. Cheers. Shirley (Mollys mum) |
I found a fun pleasant smelling bug spray with UV protection. It is a natural product called "Flea The Scene"
I really limit Chewie's sun time, but seeing he had a puppy coat that stuck around forever!!! I was trying to do everything I could. This is the product: http://www.happytailsspa.com/Flea-the-S ... ategory=16 I got the product locally, but it is available online. |
Hi Mollys mum welcome to the forum, here is a link to a product that you can order over the internet for delivery up in Queensland, scroll down till you see the spray can "Mr.Groom Show Groom" it has a built in sunscreen in it and should help to protect the ends of the coat from bronzing in the sun.
http://www.petnetwork.com.au/cgi-bin/sh ... t_id=98999 My Bries brother lives in Queensland now and they found this product really helpfull with there sheepie boy in full coat, I use it too, more so in summer here to help as well. |
Hi All,
Many thanks to got sheep and lisaoes for your help too. Thanks Lisa for the petnetwork link. I have been a regular customer with them for many years now, so will place an order for the Mr Groom Show Groom tomorrow. To tell the story of while I was away. My daughter had a spray bottle of 30+ sun block (Lisa. Amcal brand) for her children. It is a very thin white liquid. I put the nozzle onto the finest atomise and coated Molly each time we were going to be outside for quite a while. This seemed to work quite well, as she is no worse than when we went. This product also left no sticky residue. A swim in the ocean the day prior to coming home and a hydra bath tomorrow will leave her coat super clean again. Will also try to source the Flea-the-Scene locally, as I always bug spray Molly before going into groups in obedience trials. Thanks for the help. Shirley. Mollys mum. |
