Snowy has been very BAD

Yes she has counter surfed, so we keep everything push back. Yesterday she got up on the kitchen table ( I was in a different room) she was on all 4's and had managed to puch my GLASS lazy susan off and it broke all over. Today I was watching the news and I heard clicking  I rushed in the kitchen and she had managed to turn the gas stove on. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR, she could have killed us and the pups with the gas not lighting. What do I do. I know there is something to put on the front of my stove to stop anyone from useing it by accident. Does anyone know who sells them. I called the place we got our stove and they have nothing there.

a gate to keep her out of the klitchen unless you are there?
Wow, that is scary. I agree with the gate idea to keep her out of the kitchen unless she is supervised.
Can you take the knobs off the stove? We had to do that with our old stove and barney...
You'd think the manufacturer (if it is a relatively newish stove) would have a solution to lock knobs that are on the front of the stove so that they are not able to be turned by dogs (or children).

Or not.
Look in children's stores - babiesrus would have something like this:

Dutch is the worst surfer and will steal any and every thing. I put a metal cake pan over my gas stove knobs just in case she decided to try and get at them.
Baby gate is definately the way to go then no worries, only time allowed in that area is under supervision while you are in there.

Easy fixed then, also a tired snowy is a good snowy so outside and throw a ball outside, more exercising and wear her out then she will not be looking to do anything involving mischief.
When Simon was younger we took the knobs off the stove because he turned the gas on. All but two are still off. Brings a new defination(sp) to "gassey dog"
Oes Mommy,

Yes Holly also turned on the gas stove and I was at work and I had the fire department call me!!! ( This was b4 the house fire ) When I raced home the fire dept and the gas company were there and it took 4 HOURS to clear the house of fumes!!!!!!! If I had walked in a switched on the light KABOOM!! I would not be posting this ... Please take your knobs of the stove!!! The fire dept would not let me back in until I had a plan so I kept the knobs in a drawer next to the stove...... Good Luck!!!
i am soooo confused by these postings. you owe it to your dogs to keep them safe. that means if there is something they can get into (and obviouslly do) they should not be left unsupervised with access to it. Simple. if a dog is prone to counter surf and left in a kitchen alone its likely they will get into something they shouldn't at some time - didn't we have a dog die recently on this forum because they did just that?

a baby gate is like $10 and although annoying at times (men hate having to move them I know), they can save your dogs life - and maybe your house from burning down.
personally speaking I did not think Holly would have turned on the stove by accident. I am aware she can do it now and I take precautions..... I guess it is hard sometimes to think like they do.......... :?
wow something I never would have thought of. There has to be something out there. I was going to buy one like that, now I do not think so. Blue is our counter surfer and I have found him on my counter helping him self to his treats (all 4) by climbing on a chair left out.
It's not going to solve your counter surfing dudette, but on the gas stove front, can I suggest you look for a stove that does not let the gas run unless it is lit, this is not just for dogs but people too.

I would fashion a metal box to fix over the knobs, you could attach it with self adhesive Velco , if the pup knocks the cover off it would make a clang on the floor and frighten the pup off maybe?
When we bought the stove just 11 months ago we never thought of it either.

First this stove is a slide-in. it is in the center of my island. It is a GE Profile. dual fuel. I have never had the knobs lower in the front.
NO EXCUSE!! but right next to it is my prep area and my roll out garbage pail. I think that is way she is smelling around. I will get a guard for it!!!.
Been looking for one. I never let her in the kitchen alone now.
How do you get your dogs to not follow you into whatever room you're in? Normally I can't lose the dogs if I try.
they do follow me - unless they are in their space becasue I am doing something I don't need them underfoot with.

when we are in the kitchen together they know they need to stay away from the stove and the sink etc. we worked on sit stays at the right distance when they were puppies - now they have no interest in being under foot. and we do still do obedience work in the kitchen while i am cooking - so many distractions. Morgna does love to lay up against the fridge and since it has the freezer on the bottom he isn't usually in my way and I never thought to train him not to do it - I spend ALOT of time cleaning the bottom of the fridge.

notice I did say when we are together - occassionally Marley will try to go solo and explore the counter top - so doesn't happen. she is either with me - or in the breakfast room gated off (they can't get into anything there). If there is any possibility I may get distracted I throw a baby gate across the kitchen doorway. we ave four of them two on each floor and I use them all the time to keep them in, or out.
^ That was meant to be facetious since our dogs can be so velcro-y. :)
I know it was for you, but we have people rebuilding their stoves instead of using a gate to keep their dogs out of a space where they will not be supervised and in danger - figured it was a good idea to review some basics

LOL. "We have people rebuilding their stoves here." You're right but you have to admit that's funny.
Kerry, Was that ment for me? I don't understand

just a general statement, if you look back I have already said I am the one who doesn't understand why people would put their dogs at risk by allowing them to be unsupervised in an area with so many potential problems.

I am going to go get a cup of tea.

I think, in general, she's just saying it's easier (and safer) to just supervise your dog rather than reinventing the wheel to keep him or her out of trouble.
My 4 are never in a room by themselves , Murphy Loves to counter surf!!!! When I am downstairs, they are with me if I have to go upstairs they go into the grooming room with the gate shut. I have always done this, because Murphy is soooooooo very nosey. If I cannot keep them in eyes range they have to be gated. If we go out someplace Murphy and Bella are in the grooming room, and Elliott and Jazz are crated. I just feel more comfortable with their safety and the safety of my house doing this. :)
