Found Fleas on Farley. My vet gave me a capstar pill that killed them all. He is getting a shampoo in the morning. I have a 3 mo baby at home so can't use any chemicals at home for the carpet. Hopefully we caught this early on as we just started to see him itch. Some have suggested Boric Acid dusted and vacuumed. I worry about the side effects. I saw sentry carpet powder at the pet store - all natural. Looks to use Silica and salt which I know the silica is found in DE which some people like to use in place of Boric Acid. Anyone have suggestions on what to do in addition to vacuming the carpet and getting the dog cared for. Kory |

I am not a big fan of capstar, but I would suggest you just use a topical on the dog when you can. then the fleas will die off because the right topical attacks the entire cycle. shouldn't affect the baby becasue he is too young to interact with the dog anyway.
the borax/diadematus earth etc etc really does little. |
Check out our page on how to get rid of fleas on your dog |
Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. And throw out the vacuum bag often, before it gets full. This gets any fleas that are not on the dog at the moment. Does your dog get on the furniture? If so that also needs to be vacuumed as often as the floor. That includes the cushions, taking them off and doing all sides.
Flea eggs can lie dormant for a little while so keep at it and keep treating the dog for at least six months. Fleas are a fact of life when you have dogs and once they get a foot in the door its hard to get rid of the little buggers. We, in my previous life had a flea infestation. At the time we had three dogs and four cats. One of the dogs was allergic to fleas. We bombed the house then went through it room by room and sprayed flea killer. Turned the couches upside down, took the mattresses off the bed and then one by one we brought the dogs in and gave them a flea killer bath and then the cats one by one and put flea killer on them(oh what fun we had with that). We were good to go...for about three months when it started up again because we didn't keep on top of it. |
Thanks Ron and others.
Got Farley a Capstar, he got trimmed, flea shampoo, we vacuumed the entire house, did a Sentry natural carpet powder treatment (smells like Spice - yuck) laundered his dog blankets. So far after carefully searching him tonight I found only one flea that got back on him somehow. He gets the advantage stuff in the morning - let's hope that keeps things in check. |
I'd go for the Lufernon(spelling?) in his heartowrm meds... they break the cycle, so if any that do get back on him get a blood meal, their eggs will not hatch.
Good luck! |
Our girl, Bailey (5 months) didn't have a single flea until she started her puppy/obedience classes! I saw a flea on her and panicked!
Our vet recommended Promeris- (topical like Frontline). I have to say I'm partial to the stuff! I haven't seen her scratch at herself once since she started on the stuff. And of course, vaccuming, washing all linens in HOT water, etc. Real fun! But it's helped, so I'm happy! |
