Important message to people who involve in animal rescue
I am currently working with a local cat rescue group in fostering kitten before they are ready to be adopted. A lady from the rescue group just sent me this info about a person named Shon Rahrig who was convicted in Ohio for animal cruelty a few years ago and is now active in SoCal area. He is known to adopt animal to torture. There have been recent sightings of Shon Rahrig, an allegedly convicted animal abuser, at various adoption events in the SF valley lately. It is very important that everyone, especially those of you who are independent rescuers, are aware of him and have a basic idea of what he looks like. The picture of him in the link below was taken approximately 8 years ago. If you see him at our mobile adoptions, or any other adoption event, please let the rescue group or event coordinator know about his presence. His alleged crimes: http://www.petfbi.org/issuerahrig.htm Here is a copy and paste from PetFBI Background September 2000 Shon Rahrig, about 30 years old, of Sandbury Blvd, allegedly adopted 6 or 7 cats and a puppy from various local shelters and allegedly abused them horribly, broke their limbs, put their eyes out, etc. The alleged abuse became known when his girlfriend took one of the victims to a vet to be euthanized. In court he "copped a plea" to avoid the nasty publicity of a jury trial, and confessed to torturing one black and white cat, Misty, adopted from Citizens for Humane Action. Under the current statutes the most severe penalty for this man, if convicted, would be 90 days in jail and/or a fine of $750. Outcome Shon Rahrig's sentencing was well attended with representatives from CAHS, CHA, PET FBI, POET, COPA and some individuals. Channel 6 camera crew was there, the other stations were covering a school bus disaster. Rahrig did his best to look normal and innocuous, wore a jacket and tie, remained impervious to the glares of the people in attendance and leafed casually through an agenda. ( He will need to block out all of November.) After having plead guilty to one count he tried to say "it was a lie" but Kerri Manion presented the CAHS cruelty investigation team's findings which was difficult to listen to. The unfortunate cat really suffered. To get to the point: sentence was 45 days in jail, out of a maximum 90, the last 15 may be converted to work-release, by which he is free to leave during day but has to go back to jail to sleep and he has to pay for his incarceration. He has to reimburse CAHS $100 for the necropsy of the poor victim. No counseling was mandated but remains at discretion of his probation officer. Probation is 5 years during which he may not own any living thing and he is subject to check-up visits by CAHS. Judge Pfeiffer did his best, we think, to make him understand that he had committed a wanton act of cruelty against a defenseless animal and that nothing in his psychological study indicated a mental problem. "I am not crazy" said Shon. Mary Poliseno, President of CAHS, said she was concerned about what would happen if he moved outside the Franklin County jurisdiction and the Judge said he would extend his sentence to all of Central Ohio. There will probably be some protest demonstration soon to draw more attention to the case and to the sorry state of our animal protection laws here in Ohio, the Heart of it all. It is therefore hearsay, and may or may not be true. Our primary concern is to make people wary of Rahrig - he IS out there somewhere. People also need to be aware of the fact that there are other sickies like him. So BEWARE before you adopt out that helpless little animal. SPAY OR NEUTER your pets so that all pets may have a loving home and do not become treated like an excess commodity that can be discarded at will or treated like inert unfeeling "things". UPDATE!! (8/30/06): Convicted animal abuser Shon Rahrig has moved to Long Beach. He uses craigslist to find animals to torture, both posting and answering ads. He favors calico cats but will also take kittens, adult cats, puppies and older dogs instead. He tends to focus on 'free to good home' ads so he can get free victims. He is believed to post ads full of manipulative lies (see example at end). In addition to craigslist he attends adoption events and shelters and may use newspaper and bulletin board ads so please warn non-craigslist people you know. As of April 2006 he was known to live at: 5901 East Ocean Blvd, Unit D Long Beach, CA 90803 Shon Rahrig was spotted at an adoption event in the area. Keep in mind that a person who will repeatedly move to knew states in order to continue torturing animals will likely go to any length to acquire victims! He could show up anywhere. He has lived in a number of cities in California and elsewhere, including down in San Diego, so he is familiar with a range of places. Don't assume you won't encounter him! He used to have a real estate license and company and lived on Sunset Cliffs Blvd in San Diego so it is familiar territory for him. His license expired last year but may have been renewed. UPDATE June 29th: We now know from a neighbor who had been monitoring the situation that Rahrig has moved from the Long Beach address. There was a subsequent "sighting" in Columbus, Ohio. It was believed that he stopped in at Cat Welfare but that was DEFINITELY FALSE. At this time, we do not know where he is. Update, June 8 Another report suggests that Shon Rahrig is still living on Ocean Boulevard in Long Beach. Sorry about the conflicting information. Pet FBI is NOT a detective agency (FBI- Found By Internet, we have a database of lost and found Ohio Pets). We can only report second hand what has been reported to us. Update: June 5, 2006 A local resident reports the following: This morning I was reading our little paper, The Coast News, and came upon "Animal abuser in town". The APRL has sent an alert to San Diego animal shelters, pet shops and residents that he has moved to the San Diego area from Orange county. The article says that he is "reportedly living on Sunset Cliffs blvd. in La Jolla". Update: April 2006: Shon Rahrig currently resides in Long Beach California. Yes, he has moved back and the local authorities are aware of him and have paid him a visit so he knows they know. Let's hope this thwarts him and he gets tired of being chased from place to place and will settle down and overcome whatever it is that causes him to abuse animals. Being a pariah is no fun. But we like to think that people can change. February 14 2006: Just received the following message: Shon Rahrig called the Habersham Co, Clarkesville, GA. shelter today trying to get them to send a puppy to Boston! Update: February 2006 Rahrig has left the Bonita Springs area and there is no further information available Update: 11/29/2005 Rahrig reported living in Bonita Springs Florida. UPDATE: 12/28/2002 PETA's cruelty investigation team reports Shon Rahrig as now living in Fort Myers, Florida area. UPDATE: 7/23/2002: As of this date Rahrig is in the San Diego area, where he has a real estate license. UPDATE 4/17/2002: This man is reported as living in Southern California and Los Angeles area has been trying to adopt animals from numerous shelters. What a horrendous story and just shows you the evil in some people. I sent this story to several of my friends along the west coast but fortunately they were already aware of this person. That's a good thing as the more people that know of him the less chance of another innocent animal being harmed. Thank you for posting this as while it's hard to read - rescues and those involved with them need to know about him. Marianne |
