I would like to open this up for discussion. What I am thinking is it might not be appropriate to re-list CraigsList listings as I am not prepared to perform due dilligence on the lister and/or each situation. What I am thinking might be appropriate are relistings of "certified"(?) rescue groups and petfinder (who does some certification, I believe). While I am empathetic towards individuals who have authentic reasons to try to re-home a dog on their own, I don't want our forum to be used as a classifieds section for BYBs, millers or others selling dogs, and I don't have the ability to check out all of the situations, nor would I know where to draw the line. Please take the discussion anywhere you like. |

I've been hoping for some guidance on this.
Basically, in the course of searching for "my" next beloved, I've obviously come across sheepies who are not him/her but who are looking for a home. The intent of my reposting here is to facilitate them being saved and (or) someone finding their next furbaby here. As is, I've been spending a phenomenal amount of time hunting on various search engines, through shelters, and under other breeds (as some are mislabeled). Most people here know about petfinder, and I usually don't repost the ones who are with a rescue as they are already safe. I was even wondering whether reposting petfinder pups listed as Old English Sheepdog was redundant, whereas posting a mislabeled pup might actually be helpful. I have become familiar (through extensive searches on various puppy sites, most of which allow you to view the poster's other listing s, as well as general searches)with some of the most egregious puppy millers, and I never repost any pups which seem to come from them. Seeing a constant supply coming from location x, either with repetitive phrasing or sorry looking pups, is a sure sign. I have previously reposted a couple of pups before I realized what their intended 'rehoming' fee was (too steep in my estimation; perhaps a gambit for profit). Also, anything that looks like a BYB, I will not repost. Craigslist or kijiji or oodle, etc. I repost when it seems legit. Cl in particular is trickier to get good search results (sheepdog vs "sheep dog" vs "English Sheepdog" vs "old english sheepdog" +"needs home" vs +"free to good home" +"can't keep" point being, all these bring up different results. Listpic.com (visual cl browser) searches also yield differently. Since I get the impression this is a fairly ethical community of enthusiasts, I thought that it might be helpful... not only to the sheepies, but to people searching. It only occurred to me fairly recently to pass them along rather than just passing them by. And then sometimes wondering what became of them. It seems that sometimes the finding of a home is put off til the last moment. From there, perhaps a shelter (many of which don't post on petfinder). From there.... sometimes bad things happen to pups, that's all. So, apologies if it's a bit much... my intent is motivated by my love of OESies. And, in response to my query whether it was better to post them singly or groups of 3, someone said it would be clearer to people if it was singly and that it would also help the rescue pup's info come up in web searches. I'm absolutely willing to abide by whatever parameters are decided to be useful and in the spirit of the site (which I love, Thanks Ron). -Is there a better place to list these guys? -Which pups belong here? (I don't have a phone plan that would allow me to check each individually.) -Is there a petfinder -like site where it would be appropriate to disseminate the info? -An appropriate way to make short lists and make those available? -Any other thoughts/suggestions would be cool... I've asked for input in the text of several of my posts. So, yay I'm standing by for further instructions. Cheers |
by the way,
myspace classifieds seem to yield really good across the board results, including petfinder. If you don't mind sifting, just use sheepdog or "sheep dog". (i'm furry. yay!) |

Please take the discussion anywhere you like. Thanks Ron. I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this. I would hate to see the forum spammed with "Needs a good home - Generous 'donation' required" ads from the unscrupulous. However, I am uncomfortable limiting the sources where one finds dogs in need. I understand that CL can be anyone, legitimate or not. And certainly CL has become the resource for online classifieds (akin to Google as a search engine) providing more opportunity for those dishonest folks with very black hearts. However, as adults, we exercise caution, judgment and discretion in deciding to pursue a rescue/adoption. I have read many threads about people who have come here to post a "must surrender my dog" tale and ultimately do not. It doesn't mean that they intended to mislead folks, but sometimes when it comes down to it, they discover they don't really want to give up their dog. And worse, I have read a couple of threads regarding those who come to OES.org and bait forum members with an elusive dog that never gets re-homed, despite the extraordinary attempts by so many. That said, I would like to make a brief comment about rescue groups on Petfinder. There are a few "Rescues" that are not valid 501c3 organizations, but people in the recycling business. They are there to make a profit on the dogs they place. This is not something that bothers me especially, because once again, the fundamental issue is that the dog lives another day and has a chance for a loving home. So, really, is the source the issue? Having spent my lifetime doing rescues, I sure would hate for a dog in trouble to be overlooked simply because their idiot owner didn't know any better than to not list them on CL (like an old bookcase, they wish to have hauled away) instead of finding a reputable rescue organization. That's my opinion. Bear in mind I am one of those people who doesn't comprehend the concept of giving my dog away - under any circumstance. I will be most interested in others take on this. This is a wonderful place in both spirit and content. Ron, I respect any decision you make on this matter and want to thank you and the Mods for the very wonderful resource you provide. I learn so much here. Thank you. |
Dear Ron and everyone else,
OK, so I just came upon several owner surrenders during the course of my search. I don't want to just leave them as-is... what should I do? For example: 4 year old Old English Sheepdog Reply to: comm-897147250@craigslist.org [?] Date: 2008-10-28, 4:36PM EDT http://nh.craigslist.org/pet/897147250.html Looking for a loving home for our 4 yr.old neutered OES. Needs plenty of space to run and lots of attention. He loves to spend time outside no matter what the weather and especially likes to play in water and snow. Has been good with children, cats and other dogs. Please email with any questions ~ will send pictures upon request. ----- Can I... post this as shown? post a several word summary in Rescuing and ask people to PM me? post summary of several at once: location and url of original only? (more time consuming and rather round about, my job is not office based) ummm, other? I don't know... none of the above? I have no contact w/ the person, nor is my phone plan kind in terms of minutes/ I realize about contacting rescue, but that gets kind of complicated since I'm coming up with results that are (really) all over the map. I know; I need new hobbies. I'm sure as soon as my new sheepie comes along he/she will take a dim view of all this e-stuff. Then I'll be at the park or doing something else. I can't wait In the meantime... I want to do the right thing here on oes.org. Thank you!! |
thanks ron - I have found the volume of the posts in the last month or so to be overwhelming. particularly when many of the dogs were not so much in trouble, but in transition. The OES L already has people who scour craigs list and I am not sure how helpful that really is either. |
Ron, thanks for opening up the discussion.
My suggestion would be that rather than posting dogs from craigslist or other non-rescue sources, maybe it would be a good idea for anyone who finds one of those to e-mail the rescue responsible for that area and they can make the decision whether or not to get involved. For anyone who needs a refresher, the list is here: http://www.oes.org/html/oes_rescue.shtml That way, each dog could be dealt with my an experienced person in that area. It is a bit overwhelming to have so many listed on the forum at once and I worry that if there are too many, we may lose some dogs that really do need help in the shuffle. Ultimately most of us are on this forum because we already have OES and I would guess that the number of us looking for a dog right now is pretty small. Though we're always willing to help a with transport or donations to help a needy dog, we may not be the best audience for adoptions. |
I agree with ButtersStotch post. Inform the OES rescue in the appropriate area and let them decide. We don't need an OES classified section. Nor do I need to know about every dog in the country/world that needs a home.
I do agree with posting to help an "OES" that is in need, (in a kill shelter) and we need to help get him out. Helping with transport or making a donation. I know a lot of the members here work with OES rescue's so if information was e-mailed to the appropriate rescue and help was needed we would find out. It is with great pride that I can say when a situation arises, we here at oes.org do step up to the plate in helping with transport or donations. |
Yes, i can see how someone would use this as a place to advertise or sell but if it really dogs in trouble to prevent death and are free for some to want them would that be ok? Where i live the shelter has a 3 day ruling and get put down and i would be willing to take them till i find a home but i would need to use the as a way due to the great response. It would cost me the time and food but noing they will be saved means alot to me. I wish i could save them all but we know all dogs are cute as puppies then they grow up or miss behave and be come abanded or killed. I have 2 dogs which are not oes dogs that some came to me cuz they know i will get them a good home but not shure if i should post it so can i 1 is a perbreed pug and i need to see the other. Very well behaved and up to date on shots please let me know. Last i got sttic but many people gave me # and e-mails to call them next anoes comes up. I have american bull dogs and labs and shelties many that get killed cuz no claims them or wants them out here. Please asap me. thanks Debbie Moon rays mom |
Yes of course. If you have a dog that you've rescued and he or she needs a new home, that's a dog in trouble and belongs as a posting here.
The discussion came up because we were starting to repost lots of listings that were in craigslist where there are lots of unscrupulous people selling dogs and pretending that they are rescuing them. I still think that the best course of action is to work with the local OES rescues, but sometimes that just isn't possible, so a listing here is very appropriate. |
Thank u Ron I will post the 3 to amada so people can call her to give the info while i'm at work |
