How do you deal with a puppy jumping on people?

Barkley, our 3 year OES has never been much of a jumper. WE have had him since he was an 8 week old puppy.
Our new 17 month old Wrigley is a huge jumper, mostly when people come in the house. I'm a bit worried only b/c my mom and mother in law are both little women and are over a lot.
I know this behavior can be corrected with a little work. I would just like to hear of all of the different strategies from this wonderfully talented forum. Thanks in advance.
Doreen

We redirect. Our Barkley has a bed near the door, and we send him to it whenever people come over. Withonly a couple of exceptions (his breeder, my dad), he stays there until released. Usually, I release him once the people are in and have their shoes off, and then do a few quick training exercises to distract him from the people. Once they're in and settled, we don't seem to have much of a problem.

Our issue is a little different though - he jumps into people with his hips/sides, not on them with his feet. We trained that out of him when he was younger by teaching him the "off" command and completely ignoring him when he jumped on us. Took a while (and it's hard not to push them off, or pet that loveable head that's nearly at eye level), but it seemed to work for us.

Another option (yup, used this one too) is to have him on a leash if you're expecting people so that you can control him and keep him from jumping. This is less of a training solution and more of an interim control solution until the training starts to take hold.
I have the same problem with Holly! She seems to greet EVERYONE with a jump and I have elderly people in my family and I am so afraid she is going to hurt them. I plan on working with her more than I have been and I like the idea of off and wait by the door. I also have a problem with her when I go to bed at night she will jump up on the bed and tackle me when I get in rubbing all over me and pushing on me how do I stop that????
yup i'm gonna "jump" on board with this one to. Beckett is pretty much an angel OTHER than his jumping. It's hard for me bc he doesn't jump on me...even when i first arrive home. But as far as everyone else goes as soon as they walk in the house he's all over them. we're at 10mon now...i thought once we hit puppy school that might help but.... who knows. i try to be consistant with the "back turn" (ignore him) or a knee up to deflect the pounce... but its hard when its only on other people bc they don't always follow your directions when a cutie boy jumps up to see them. any other ideas are incouraged - lord knows we've ALL been through this in the "teenage" years. stubborn sheepies 8)
I never thought I would say this - but its soooo upsetting. both my guys will normally jump up on me and stop when told to. I noticed the other day Morgan is n't doing it anymor e- and not because he has finally learned - he actually looks like he is trying too and just can't do it because of his hips. it make me sad, I didn't want to have a well behaved sheepie this much
We would leave Barney in the kitchen when we knew people we coming over. Not only did he like to jump on people (not majorly, more like knocking into them), he also peed from excitement. So we would leave him in the kitchen for a few minutes and then once everyone was settled, he was fine to come in. It was only when they were at the door that it seemed to be a problem.
Summer does this when we are out if anyone speaks to us or says "lovely dog" so regretably we now ask them not to stroke her as she is still in training! She thrives on fuss....
He just gets put behind the gate away from people who don't like it.

I am probably not the best owner in the world from a dog training angle, as I quite like his bouncy happy nature, he is just trying to do what comes natural - say hello to an upright two legged animal in a two legged way, and as long as it isn't aggressive I don't try and suppress these behaviors.

We always warn people who come to our house about him.
Ok, I'll probably get slammed but I use the knee. I don't slam my knee into the chest but put my knee up and they hit that. Its not pleasant for the dog but neither is getting knocked over for us.
Laika isn't too bad with me because she is usually with me all the time. but when my boyfriend comes over she can become very bouncy. What he does is turns his back on her; it works. She settles right down.
