Slightly morbid OES age poll.

I know the average lifespan for OES is 10-13 years. It seems like quite a few here have had OES that have lived 13+. I'm just curious what the average is. OES poll only please.

Thanks! :D

I voted in the 9-10 range, but sadly, that was an accidental death. :(
Not due to old age or disease.
Tyler was just shy of his 13th birthday. His last year was a steady decline in body, but his mind and spirit was not in agreement.
Maggie died suddenly at 10--she was fine one day and gone the next--no decline or anything
Flash died in May, he would have been 15 the following December. Dasiy and Beau were both 8 when they died :(
It is a very sad topic :(

I hate the thought of them getting old.

Me too Stacey, with an 11y/o and a 10y/o I'm relieved every morning when they get up.
It is a sad topic having to deal with one that is nearly 14 and having golden oldie issues at the moment, will she make 14 well I am hoping so. :plead:

Then we look at Champas who reached 18 years and 1 week old before her passing so there is hope, most of mine have seem to be around the 13-14 year old mark when they leave. :(

Wish the time span was longer, you never get over it, but time lessens the loss and memories are forever of how much they impact on ones life and love.
I wanted to see the results of the poll, but the results don't show unless you vote and THANK GOD Tasker is still with me. But as his 14th B'day approached it is a subject I become more and more concerned with.

As his health fails I find myself starting to grieve prematurely and wonder just how long he's going to be with me. But then he has a good day and I thhink he'll be around forever!!

There's a little link under the poll's "submit vote" button that says: "View Results".

 ahhhhhhhhhhhh
I'm sorry, didn't mean to bum anyone out.

What prompted the poll was an email that I received from someone who lost their OES from cancer at 2 or 3 years old and they were wondering how long OES were supposed to live to. I was just curious...

Same with Shaggy. We always thought he was 12 too until we pulled out his papers a few years later, he was actually 11. Still miss him!

Just a baby. I hope you told them about the vet cancer registry?

Kristine
I'm glad you made this topic! I was wondering the same thing too because you always want to hear it may be possible for your dog to live forever ;)
I have alwayss "heard" that the life span of an oes was 10-12 years.
Ellie my 1st sheepie was 13, And Amie my next girl was 10 I was so sad when amie left us, as I thought she would still be with us till around 13 :( As ellie was :(
Mine seem to average around the 11-12 year mark. I am hoping for longer with the 3 I have now. Cathy had a girl that made it to 16 a few years back. My father/son duo down here......their father/grandfather made it to 14. My vet always says anything over 10 years is a a blessing in the larger dogs.
Tasker is going to live to be 100....... I hope.
My first boy, Buford, lived until 2 months shy of his 16th birthday. And Drez was 3 months shy of her 15th. Granted, their last year of life was not their true, younger personality, but I was SO glad for that extra time!
My first sheepie was 12 1/2 and my second was 13. I hate when they get up in age.

What's your longevity secret? or is it something in the air/water there?
I am way behind on this but, just noticed it.
Paddy is soon to be 14 and foster Lulu is now 13.
They are both rescues but, I have thier history so,
that is actual age...
Wilby, we also knew his birthdate and he was 11 1/2
when he passed.
BRANDON, our first, was fine one day, whimpered the next, and was gone right after. He was six years old, and had a very aggressive cancer that started on his bladder. It was devastating.

ThePas had many health obstacles to overcome his whole life, but was strong in spirit and had ten great years. I noticed problems. No one believed me. We lost him to kidney failure at the age of ten. Our vet says it must have been chronic and undetected but I don't believe that. We tested him all the time, and had just changed meds. I was against it, and believe that pushed him over the edge and will never be able to let go of that guilt. Logically I know I shouldn't feel that way, but my heart is one hundred percent against me.

Portage is nearly eleven and was healthy and wonderful and a giant puppy for the first ten years. Right around the time we lost Theeps (his littermate) Portage turned into an old man. It was like a switch had been turned on.

I'm having a really hard time looking at him and not falling apart. Hopefully he's got five or six more years ahead, but that sinking feeling is hard to let go of.

Hudson is nine and a half months old, and already I'm starting to think about the end of his life in the back of my mind. I know it's ridiculous. but with the pain of losing Theeps so strong still, and watching Portage age so rapidly, it's hard not to.

Portage and ThePas came from a mom who lived to sixteen, and a grandfather who lived to fourteen.

The world would be a much better place if sheepies lived forever. (Or at least if we all went quietly in our sleep, at the age of 99, together.)
