Kitchen remodel update

I was perusing Craigslist (thanks Mrs J) and I was looking for mosaic tile deals. I wanted to put in a tile back splash, but didn't really want to have to rent and use a tile saw. So I wanted to do glass mosaic tiles. So the object was to find the best deal I could on mosaic tiles........

TA DAAAAAAAA! What do you think?

Image

First, the texture you see is the back of the tile, the front is paper so I can't show you that side, just check out the color. They are white, light grey and dark grey so I'm thinking of a mid grey grout

We are have a great deal of difficulty in getting the plumbing in and not leaking..... hence I still don't have a kitchen sink. Anyone have any suggestions besides get a plumber?????????

OMG.... I have running water, a dishwasher, a garbage disposal, plumbing and a working stove.... not to mention that I have doors on all my lower cabinets and counter tops........ I have been a busy little girl. I had a three day weekend and I worked until my fingers were very sore not to mention the muscles that I didn't realize I had.....

Here are a few photos to update you on the progress;

Image
sink, faucet and the back side of the tile to see what it will look like on the wall. My mom is not fond of it... I think it's too busy for her taste. I like it and I couldn't beat the price.

Image
Faucet with no tile in the background so you can see the beauty that is our Delta faucet.... I love it.

Image
A working stove.... and cabinets with doors. The cabinet to the right of the stove is one of those pantry shelving units, it's really cool.

Image
All the doors on the lower cabinets are on and so are all the counter tops....

Image
Dishwasher is installed.... Lee and I did the water, dishwasher, faucet, Garbage disposal and gas lines to the stove.........

Tonight we are going to work on the knobs and handles.... and the upper cabinet doors.... I'm also thinking of puck lights... what do you all think?
I am so impressed! I think it looks great. What all do you have left to do?
That looks wonderful, you have been VERY busy!!

I love the mosiac tiles. :D
Cool! It reminds me of Jil's bathroom tile, but the kitchen version. ;)
I LOVE mosaic tiles!!! We use them to make trivets back in the day, and they're still my mom's favorite. I love it. Makes a HUGE difference! :D
Nice! Is that wood counter tops?
It looks great Leslie. I like your floor.
Judy, Thanks for the floor comment. I'm also pretty pleased with how it came out. It is a sheet product and not real slate tile. It looks pretty real in person too, that is until you step on it and it's not cold... It would have been less expensive to go with real slate than with this product, but I cook alot and standing on tile does not thrill me.

Crusty.... Yep, it's wood, solid wood butcher block.... I installed them myself.... with minimum help with carting them around. They are from Ikea and it cost a total of $277.00 for my counter tops. They have a new style of solid wood that would have run me just over 500 dollars, but they still have some of the older style, called Pronomen... So if you are interested, I suggest you hit the local Ikea and ask if they have any left, that is if you are looking for a bargin. I wanted to go with granite and had it all selected, but once Kiera got sick the money for my granite went out the window. I'm so proud of my self with all that I have been able to do.

Joahaeyo, I love mosaic too and thanks to you, I got the idea to prowl through all the craigs list postings and I found this tile for a bargin at 2 bucks a sheet.... I also wanted glass mosaic because I could cut them with a nipper and not have to rent a tile cutter.

Thanks for all the positive comments... We finally feel like we are nearing the end... the punch list is getting shorter. In fact I actually steamed some veggies on the stove and heated up some fish sticks in the oven.

The contractor is going to come on Saturday and connect the hood and finish a couple of last items, I just can't wait....... At least I will be able to cook my turkey dinner in a new kitchen.....
I am soooo impressed with everything you've done!
Thanks Ron... I'm pretty please with what we have been able to do. It's hard work and you really have to think of all the steps, be realistic as to what you can and cannot do. What you are willing to do and what you would rather pay to have someone else do. I'm eyeing the bathroom as the next big task. I want to move the door over, retile the entire surround, have the tub refinished, install a double vanity and put in a heated floor.... Oh do I have ideas... 5 star spa bath here I come.. :)

Hey Jill, I forgot to mention, that they are glass mosaic much like Jil's but her's are really beautiful translucent tiles with much more depth of color and I'm sure a tad more expensive than what we purchased. These are solid glass and not at all translucent. I was looking for something that remained in the neutral color way and was really lucky to find this deal. Mosaic can run upward of $9.00 for a square foot for pretty basic tile. Stone will run you a bit higher, but can be used as a feature strip and the kind that Jil put down are a little harder to do because you have to smooth the mastic so no lines show through... The glass that I bought are a little easier to install, or at least I hope so. I will let you know once I actually get the time to install them.

Last night we pulled the Dishwasher out again and connected the plugs for the heating element. We discovered that it was on a show room floor and while it was not connected to water, as a precaution, they unpluged the heating elements. I remember seeing two plugs not connected and pulling it out half way, I was able to reach under and connect the plugs. We ran another load of dishes and they dried this time...

I have not had a dishwasher in a very long time. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for products; soap, rinse aides and such?????? What works the best? Anyone....?
very nice - we used glass masaic tiles on our backsplasha s well. hubby thought I was crazy but everyon who walks into the kistchen does the - I love the backsplash! thing.

as for dw soap. I only use cascade complete. I can't use liquid or the cubes in the drawer dishwasher and the cascade complete works really well - especially since hubby doesn't believe in rinsing
I used to use Cascade Gel, it was wonderful. The newish dishwasher doesn't have a heater for the dry "cycle", and it requires both powder and a liquid rinse agent (to aid in drying), so we use Trader Joes' powder and Jet Dry as the rinse agent.
so on the Jet dry thing, do you just pour the liquid stuff in each time, or does it last for a while, like a measured dispenser thing.???

What does the heating element have to do with what cleaning agent you use?

The dishwasher that we got is a Maytag Steam Dishwasher, and it came with samples of the jet dry in a bottle and little hard soap things with like a pearl in the middle.... will these work...? I have misplaced the bag of samples in order to try them...

So Kerry, you have drawer style dishwasher and that limits what you use for cleaning??? I had no idea that would limit what you use... thanks for the tips

Many of the new dishwashers say that you don't have to rinse first... what's up with that? Also, in my search for the best product and price, I found that the European made dishwashers, ie ASKO and Bosch do not come with what is called a food grinder... where as the American made ones do.... you have to empty out the food trap thing on the European ones or they will get smelly.

Any dishwasher protocol and tips are greatly appreciated. I have not had a dishwasher since the late 70's and I'm not kidding. and I have not had a garbage disposal since before that....... Next I will be telling you about walking in 6 feet of snow, up hill both ways to get to school... oh, that was my mom's story... heheeh

Yes. In my Kenmore Elite (really a Bosch under the label) model, the Jet Dry goes into a Rinse Agent dispenser and is dispensed automagically, and it gives a lit warning when it needs to be refilled.

I worded that a bit clumsily, the heating element is an issue for the drying cycle and rinse agent, not the cleaning agent.

BTW, I was very concerned about the lack of a dryer in the dishwasher. I had always been told that the drying cycle was when the dishes got really hot and sanitized, and I had read online some horror stories about brown flatware.

We have been VERY plased with the dishwasher. It is almost completely silent, and the water gets heated automatically to 161 degrees to sanitize and the dishes are hot and after the dry cycle are bone dry (except for any pools of water on cup bottoms, as usual). Occasionally a piece of flatware has a brown waterspot on it, but it scrapes right off with a fingernail and goes back into the basket.
