Has anyone else had success teaching their OES to catch things mid-air? My last OES could never do it either, although both he and Frank were/are great at chasing a ball and retrieving it. I'm just wondering if it's an OES trait to not be able to do that. |

My last post I was heading to bed, but this one caught me and I have lots to add.
Jack learned to catch a ball with his I CUBE balls too. It took about 2 weeks of practicing. Have you tried a short distance between you and him? Jack will bring the ball and place it in my lap and stare at me, and then I give him the back command....LOL, he thinks he has to turn in circles to go back...it is so funny! When he gets back far enough, I will tell him "ready to catch" and then toss it gently. He gets it most of the time now. Once he figures out the "timing", then he will start catching them more. I have posted more than once about Jacks love of a ball. He loves fetching and having me hide it and him find it too. Annie will fetch, but she doesn't catch it. She also isn't fond of ball hide and seek, but loves finding the kids. Keep trying, he will get it. When he does, tell us about his new milestone.! Stormi and co. |
I tried teaching Max to catch when I first got him. But after awhile I gave up. But believe it or not, he now catches a soccer ball (somewhat deflated and torn up) in his mouth when I kick it up in the air. He gets at least a foot or so off the ground and jumps way up in the air. Its amazing because its pretty heavy too. He loves it though. Even if the ball doesn't get off the ground, he leaps up in the air to get it. Its pretty amazing to watch. |
Here's what I've been doing with Lennon and Sofa to teach them to catch balls and frisbees in the air:
First you may want to get your sheepie close to you and start teaching him to catch things, sit your dog, then pretend the ball flies and put it in their mouth and have them bite it, or encourage them to take it from your hand when it's about waist level or so. When you get that one done, start with a very short distance and something that will fit well in their mouths, like a tennis ball. Start increasing the distance and make a huge fuss when they catch it. Lennon catches his big tennis ball most of the times if you throw it right. Lennon & Sofa already chase the frisbee and Lennon can catch in mid air sometimes, he even jumps in the air and catches it 4 legs in the air (Like 1 on every 20 tries... but it's a start ). For that I used the same ideas, first I hold the frisbee to my chest level and encourage them to jump to bite it, then when they are used to it, throw it close and they'll fetch it, start increasing the distance. Lennon likes to run ahead and then stop 30 feet from you to wait until you throw it, so it makes it easier, but it's more training for you because you have to learn to throw it steady. If you want them to chase frisbees, I reccomend the old navy soft ones, almost indestructible and easy for them to pick up. Good Luck! |
Our first boy was a major ball catcher. It takes practice over and over again, one time he was watching the ball come down he was outside and the tennis ball hit him right on top of his head we played about an hour every day even when he was old he could catch potato chips as they went by him. Oreo is better at it but he will run and spit the ball our. Try bouncing the ball and let the dog catch it that way. Some dogs just could care less my Oliver was like after a few catches he would just stop. Good luck and have fun! |
My girls won't catch or fetch a ball when I throw it to them, but they will catch them if they throw it themselves or to each other. They throw it up in the air above their heads and catch it, or they will fling it to each other... it is so funny to watch.... |
That's good to know you guys have had success and thanks for the tips to start out closer, I was about 15 feet away. Frank definitely gets the idea that I'm trying to get him to catch the ball, but he hasn't quite gotten down the "mouth-eye" coordination. He does catch toys occasionally but it's purely by accident. |
Woof's very much like a cat in this respect. He looks up at me and says "you chucked the ball - you go get it...."
He is, however, mad for torch beams - if i take him out at night he'll dash all over the place hoping to catch a spot of light on the ground.... |
