How would you react to this.

I just recieved an email from a friend, Her whole family, all the inlaws and their children plus ma and pa in law are planning a group vacation. They are raising money to go on this vacation by soliciting members of our church. They want to take orders for pumpkin pies. She is in charge of one of the organizations in our church and I feel she is using this position to send out emails and etc for this endeavor. IMO I feel this is very wrong. I feel the whole thing is wrong. When we arrange vacations we dont sell things and get orders from people, friends etc. I just feel it would be wrong. Especially in this economy. Who wouldnt want to take a vacation but geez... Am I being stingy or down right rude. What would you all think if approached by someone selling things for a vacation in that manner.. I just feel like omg the nerve. Am I wrong???

absolutely not.
That is audacity

While we are at it, I've not had a holiday for 6 years, please send me money via my Paypal account. Oh, and a new wardrobe for Greg & I would be great too
If they're taking advantage of the church email list ...I think that's wrong. I think church has always been a great place to "advertise" but the correct way (doing the leg work to talk to everyone, maybe put a bulletin up in the designated place, or even a small announcement if you go to a small bible study, etc)

Other than that, I actually think it's a clever way to raise money for a vacation. It's not like they're asking for money for their "personal" trip w/o giving something back. They're selling pies ...as I would tell my kid to sell lemonade if he wants money for his bike (example). I wouldn't mind if he did the leg work to leave flyer at everyone's house either.

I don't think "how the economy is now" is a reason not to do this either. You either have the money to buy their pie or don't. :)

Again, for me.. it's just sending the mass spam email to people who probably didn't sign up for mail other than "church news" that would upset me.
it could very well also be illegal depending ont he privacy policy of the church and could open up th echurch and the "friend" to large law suits. Privacy is a big issue these days.
Using e-mail lists or contact information that does not belong to her is wrong. It is a huge privacy issue and, to be honest, I'd be irate to see a solicitation for someone's private vacation in my inbox. Plus, they would have to 100% up front about what the money is going for and I hope that it's very clear to everyone who got it that this isn't church related.

I don't think the idea of raising money is a bad one, and I think selling pies is just fine. Being invasive about it is another issue.

They're going to need to sell A LOT of pies, lol.
I feel it is in very poor taste to email everyone and solicit them for a private vacation. If it was for a fund raiser for kids going on a trip or something like that, hang a poster ask privately but dont email everyone on the list. I agree with bgirl. I want a vacation too. All donations can be made to the Europeon vacation!!! :D:D:D j/k I think the funds for a vacation should be a privately earned thing. There's almost 20 people going on this vacation most of which are adults that can work and earn money. For me there is a big difference between kids and a lemonade stand and adults baking pies for a family vacation.

You have to also understand that this is one of many emails asking for money in one way or another. First it was tastefully simple, then the one family member sells pampered chef and constantly wants hosts for parties, then just last week was the tupperware party. Frankly I have had enough of the hand out looking for money. I'm broke trying to get a kid through college.............. hmmmmm now theres an idea........... just kidding again.
starting a home business - for whatever reason is one thing (unfortunately being pies it does evoke the bake sale image doesn't it?). using privledged information to do so is another. someone in the church hieracrchy should be made aware of the privacy issue! and sorry I can't contribute to your european vacation fund, but if you want to contribute to my caribean relocation fund ....
If they are sending emails from a personal email I would say it's a bit odd but ok. If they are using a church email then it is just plain wrong. That they came by the list through the church is not really significant, people get emails all different kinds of ways.

I'd just file it in the spam folder and let it go.
I'd probably get all righteous about it at first, then say "whatever"; Joan would buy the pie. She loves pumpkin pie.

so funny and so true

We ran a military email thingy. This was obviously to keep family members informed about their soldier, so very official business and the families who signed up only had one interest.

I got emails all the time of people frustrated b/c sam sent a forward with jokes or what not. I'd get furious too b/c some people are just knuckleheads and don't "get it" even after telling them. One day someone used it to say their church friend had to get rid of their kitty fast b/c they needed to move to Seattle for surgery they didn't offer in Alaska. Guess who took the kitty?
Our dentist sends out periodic informational emails to his patients, as well as using them as a reminder for appointments. A patient used the list to troll for business. The denstist was furious and the patient sent out an apology and promised not to do it again or use our info.

Similar thing in that the list was used in a way not intended when the member signed up.

legally if she got the emaillist through her position on a church organization she is probably using it against their privacy policy and someone could sue - I believe internet privacy is actually a federal set of laws.
Maybe you can tell the appropriate person at the church and ask to remain anonymous?? I'm SURE she wouldn't continue this if she (or family) was told people had complained. It's a legit reason. You gave your email address to hear about CHURCH announcements. You aren't the only one irritated by this, I'm sure.
Tacky
I'd tell them what they can do with their pumpkin pies (Oooooh Pie fight, watch out, flying pies    )

Different if the money was being raised for the church or a church charity, then I would have no problems buying one, but what they are doing for their own benefit AINT RIGHT>>>>>>>>Pie fight YAY 8)
I'd MAKE SURE it doesn't seem as though the church is involved, more for "safety" reasons. If someone was to get sick, you definately don't want that the church liable for that!

I see no problem with raising the money from selling pies, but IF they don't make enough to go on the trip, since they're using the church folks, they should donate whatever money they raised to the church.........
Maybe because I am from the sticks but I never heard of a church email privacy policy!!! I suppose it could be, I just never heard of it. Email addys are gleaned from a wide variety of sources, evidenced by the amount of SPAM we all receive.

I only wish I could sue someone for giving out mine!!!
Just delete this piece of spam, and get on with your day.
