So...I always put my purse in the same place. Last night in the middle of the night, Lizzie started barking. She's never done that. It was sort of a mean bark. The other two dogs were quiet. The barking only went on for a few minutes...followed by softer barking. We figured she had a nightmare. This morning I was getting ready for work, and guess what? My purse was nowhere to be found! We searched the house, and I cannot find it. I searched my car...the refridge (don't laugh) the closets, the pantry. I cannot find my purse! So, I decided to call my cell phone (which is always on) so I could listen for the ringing in the house. It went right to voicemail, as though it was turned off. I think someone broke in our house last night. Probably into the kitchen (although none of the doors seem tampered with) and they woke Liz and she started barking and scared them. So they quickly grabbed my purse (which would have been right there in the kitchen) and left. Now I don't know what to do!!! Tony is going home a bit later this am to double check everything. Keep your fingers crossed he finds it. I'm leaving town friday, so I need my drivers license and my credit cards!!! I am totally freaked out. |
|
First and foremost call the police, then call bank accounts, credit cards etc if only to put a hold on the accounts and see if anyone tried to use them. My daughter just had her wallet stolen at work. Its very important to call about your cards. Do you have any idea where they came in your house? I'm so sorry this happened. Dont forget to call you cell phone company does your phone have GPS? some do Dont know if that would help. |
Best of luck Deborah. And I agree--call the police. If your purse was stolen, you need to call the credit card companies ASAP. Call them this morning and explain what happened. Even if you left your purse in the fridge, better safe than sorry. |
OMG - thats awful especially as you don't know really whats happened.
Yes - I would call the Police and stop all of your cards. I hope that it turns up! |
Oh my goodness!!
Definitely, call the police first and file a report. Call the bank and the credit card companies and your cell phone company (since your phone is gone, too). Better safe than sorry - right? Keep us posted. I'm hoping you find it, though. |
I will be waiting to hear was has happened. Hopefully it was left somewhere, instead of stolen. Get holds on all the cards in the meantime. I will be praying all goes well. |
OMG, Deb, how scary!!!!!!!! I agree with everyone else - call the police and stop those cards! Someone told me once that to make sure you know everything that's in your wallet, you should photocopy every credit card, front and back, medical insurance cards, driver's license, car insurance cards, etc., and keep them in a safe place just in case of something like this.
Hopefully it turns up, and soon! |
the credit card compoanies and your stat can both (the State for a fee) fedex new cards/license so you are not delayed on your trip.
DOn't ask me how I know!!! and hugs to Liz!!!! |
Well, its pretty much confirmed, we were robbed. Another house on our cul-de-sac was robbed Friday night. Tony is at the house with the police now. OY! I've been on the phone with credit cards companies (who are NOT as nice in real life, as they are in commercials when you lose your cards), cell company, my bank and a varity of others. I just want to go home, get in bed and cry for about an hour. This is incredibly stressful. I guess we are lucky Lizzie has a big mouth! What a good girl...the other two were too busy sleeping to help. We will be extra diligent with our locks from now on, and I think the dogs should sleep in the kitchen. I'll update when I know more. |
Oh no Deb, I am so sorry.
Glad Lizzie scared them off and they weren't able to get anything else. |
I'm so sorry I'm SO GLAD you weren't hurt or anyone else. That is the scariest part to me. I hope this never happens again, and they catch this/these jerks.
Did you have anything important (other than the cards which you will get back and can cancel) in your purse? I always like to know if I'm not the only one who keeps their life in there. |
That is crappy!
I hang my purse on a coat hook - about 10 feet into our house. Thankfully, I have Chewie and Riley on the porch that they would have to get past 1st! Then Simon on the couch..... I misplace mine too - that is why it always goes on the hook. Jo - yes, my life is in my purse. I don't have an office or desk or any spot all mine at work; so I carry everything with me. |
Been there, and you really feel violated knowing someone has been in the house. Hugs to you and cookies for Lizzie. |
Deborah, I'll be blunt--credit card companies are@ssholes and think YOU are guilty. You'll be making more than one phone call to each company, trust me. Also notify the 3 credit bureaus of the theft and have them put "watches" on your credit rating. That means you will be notified and must give permission if anyone tries to open credit in your name.
Keep a copy of the police report and be prepared to fax it to the credit card companies, banks, etc. Change the locks on your doors and put on deadbolts (or whatever they are called these days). And an alarm system. And give Lizzie a cookie. She's a good watch dog. |
my experience with credit card companies has been so good when reported lost/stolen cards. and I lost the same card three times in two weeks |

Me, too. I had a harder time getting them to change my name when I got married! Do you guys know how they got in? |
A Detective from our local police department just called me. Apparently there have been several of these "break ins" in our neighborhood. "They" have gotten away with alot more stuff other places, laptops, wallets, purses, some art pieces, jewelry. Lizzie is my hero! She scared them away, and all they got from us was my purse - which was right out in plain view!!! We think they got in through the backdoor...that is apparently how they've gotten into most of the homes. |
Deb,
I am so sorry... I hope this doesn't ruin your trip |

Lizzie is my hero! She scared them away, and all they got from us was my purse - which was right out in plain view!!! We think they got in through the backdoor...that is apparently how they've gotten into most of the homes. Did they jimmy it or was it open? I'm surprised all the dogs didn't go insane. That sucks they got your purse. To be honest, I'd rather lose anything in the house except for my purse. Everything's in there! I hope they catch who did it. I hate the idea of someone breaking into someone's home. It's less about the stuff than feeling invaded. |
Ok...he will kill me if he knows that I told you. Tony said because I came home late (9pm) from my WW meeting, and asked him to stay up with me while I ate dinner, it threw his routine off, and he doesn't think he locked the backdoor. It happens. But we are all safe. I agree about losing my purse...it had my world in it!!!! |
I have dog doors into my garage and into my house and they are probably big enough for me to crawl through. I would hope someone would think before trying to come in. I do think Bella would go after an unannounced stranger, but it also would scare her. I know her happy greetings scare my friends...so I know she is definately a burglar alarm.
Good job Lizzie for at least barking!!! |
Deb I am so sorry. You don't need this stress right before going off to visit your son.
Not that there is ever a good time to be robbed but getting ready to travel adds to the stress. |
Oh my goodness. I am so sorry this had to happen--- Good luck in getting everything taken care of before your leave for CA.
(((hugs))) |
Sorry to hear that you were robbed. Thank goodness that Lizzie barked. I thought the criminals stayed away from the houses with the dogs!! You're making me rethink where I put my purse too. We've had some break-ins in our neighborhood recently. Very scary to think that people are so brazen to violate your personal property. |
Back in hs, I remember it being very common in our area for kids to go window hopping. If they saw something within reach, they'd go into your window ..grab the purse...and leave. |
ohhhhhh i've been there, 4 times now over the years. I remember when we were burglered in Durango. (one of my ex's clients) and i remember coming home from work and thinking "now why are all of these doors open? and Drawers opened?" Thinking my ex was being so sloppy and then not thinking more of it until about a week went by and i couldn't find my new camera bag and camera that were missing. My x just called me forgetful of where i had put it. Until we started missing a couple of things, like his 357 mag., my elk hunting rifle, and a specific sweater I loved. That is when we knew we had been burgled.
Then there was the time my mom told me not to wear any of my diamonds to Mexico. so i took them off and left them in my jewlery box in my apt. , the guy i had been seeing knew i was going to be gone..... came in thru the window and all was gone. He was a jockey and a drug addict to delotid..... (didn't know at the time). or in April, when my housekeeper of 6 months and pet sitter stole my new computer out of the box and returned the box to the top shelf in my bedroom closet. I know to the minute when i put it there on what day and when i returned from the wedding in Mexico i had gone to and it was missing. She was the only one with access to my house... have the police done anything? NO......... Norm and i will be going to the pd tomorrow to find out WHY they have never done anything........ I'm so sorry. Please get your locks changed. Put a bell on the inside of the door. And try not to feel so violated I know it's hard........ |
We had a bunch of police here tonight. They gave us a "to do" list..changing all the locks, re-keying the locks on my car (they got my car keys and remote start), all the credit card and bank calls, which I had already completed. They also said, I should call AT&T and see if any calls were made between 10pm and 10 am, when I froze my service. No one has tried to use my cards...good. I went and got a new drivers license tonight (Tuesday is the only night the DMV is open until 7:00), so I'll be able to fly Friday. I had to find a sub for my WW meeting...but it will be worth it. I am freaked out. First the big accident in August, now this. Where is this Karma coming from? I am a good person. Any ideas how to "cleanse" my Karma????? I'm serious. The police were really great. There have been 3 of these in our hood...and while they were here, another neighbor came over and reported that his car was broken into last week, but never called the police, because HE THOUGHT HE HAD JUST MISPLACED ALL THE MISSING STUFF FROM HIS CAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We think so little of ourselves! I know you won't believe this, but we live in a really nice neighborhood! What the heck is going on???? Thanks for your support today. It's been a b*tch!!! Love ya all! PS...the police said they would let us know if they catch the perps and that they've had good luck with this sort of thing, cuz the crooks get sloppy. |
Deb, I'm really sorry to hear that this happened to you. Give Lizzy a big belly rub for being such a good guard dog! I know this is going to sound like a weird suggestion - if you have any big trash cans or dumpsters around (behind a nearby store or in a park), you might want to check them out. Since the thief didn't try to use any of your cards, he (or she) probably just took any cash and dumped your purse as quickly as possible. I was having lunch in Chicago with a friend one day who had her purse stolen from under the table. It was found in the ladies room of the same restaurant, in the trash, less the cash. This summer a girlfriend had her briefcase stolen from her car (Scottsdale this time). She got a call a week later - someone found the briefcase in a dumpster. The thief had taken about $200 in cash out of the briefcase but left a bunch of checks and all of her paperwork. So, you might get lucky and find all of your stuff. |
Several years ago, I got a call at work from the police that someone had broken into the house.
A guy was going door to door in our neighborhood. He rang the door of the neighbor across the street, gave her a strange story and left. she watched him ring our doorbell and then go to the back of the house. so she called the police (We sent her flowers). By the time the police arrive, he had entered the house through a door the kids had left unlocked (and the alarm off). He went upstairs, grabbing hockey jerseys from the bos closet (cheapo kids jerseys, not the expensive ones), then into my daughter's room where he dumped all of her drawers (he may have thought it was the master bedroom). He next went into our bathroom and the police arrived to wrestle him to the ground as he came out of the bathroom. They emptied his pockets of my prescription allergy meds, some gold coins, a twenty and a hundred. The gold coins belonged to my husband from a bad investment, the twenty we thought might belong to one of our kids and my husband laid claim to the hundred (counterfeit that someone tried to pass at work - I had no idea and worried that the treasury department would show up on our doorstep - he just thought it was interesting). Turned out the twenty wasn't ours, it belonged to the thief. When we told the police, the guy laughed and said the thief told them the twenty was his, but that we would try to claim it. Rats! We could of made money on being robbed! Deb, it takes some time to get comfortable in your house again. I am so glad that everyone is okay! |
I know exactly how you feel. Back in 2006 we had our home broken into 4 times in one month! The last time it happened we figured out who the guilty party was. We knew it had to be someone that knew us fairly well because each time they would lock SamSun and my other babies in our bedroom.
Although it's very hard, in time it will all work out for you. |
Sorry to read about this.
They picked your street precisely because you were a soft target, any odd vans or cars in the street in the preceeding days? They were probably watching your security measures. |
Last night my hubby went to the homeowners association meeting. In the meeting they mentioned that one of the homeowners, in our gated community, had their house robbed during the day...just down the street from us.
Well, the other day, two "20" something girls knocked at my door, during the day, and asked if I wanted my carpet cleaned for free. They had a bottle of Ajax Dishwashing liquid and a card with no phn number or company name on it. The deal for the free gift of Ajax was only good for that minute and there was no name or phn number to call to set up an appointment for another time. I told the girls that I had just cleaned my carpet a week ago...and the dogs where barking at the door next to me. They then asked if I wanted my couches cleaned for free. That is when I took the card to look for a name of a company or a phn number. I felt it was a scam and now wish I had called the police. We are in a gated community and so these girls should not have been able to get in to solicite or they live here. Anyway, good luck Deb and I'm sorry you had to go through this. |
Deb, how scary! I'm so glad that your purse was the only casualty. I've always heard that a lot of times thieves who break in will only grab what they can see from the outside of the house from a window so they know exactly where to go and don't waste time. That's why my purse sleeps with me at night...out of sight, and past Barney!
I think this bad economy will be bringing out more petty thieves like this, so everyone should be extra vigilant about locking their doors and windows... |

It totally ruined my day yesterday, but I decided it stops there. I won't let it ruin my trip. The police were over last night, and did say, since the credit cards and phone have not been used, chances are just the cash was taken, and maybe the phone (to sell), and that my purse is laying around with everthing else in it. They said they are going to be walking the area. We'll see. Maybe it will turn up, but I truly doubt it. I refuse to let this get me down, its just "stuff" that I lost...nothing more. |
Good for you!! |
Deb, good attitude!!!
Like some of the others, been there done that, except the thieves DID NOT get in. This happened during the day, Randy was out of town and it was me and the dogs. We have a breezeway that leads into the house and garage. One of the breezeway doors only has a hook and eye on the top. Thats the only lock for that door. The thieves couldn't get through that!!! The only way we knew that someone tried to get in was that the door was not shutting right, it was sticking. Randy fixed it and we went to the police(they are close) and told them. They said 1) They like to "see" the evidence before the homeowners fix it and 2) were surprised that it happened in our area. |
Our car was "broken into" once here... I put it in quotes because we never used to lock the car doors befoer This Incident.
They were breaking into (opening the unlocked doors of) all the cars on the street, stealing mostly change kept by nearly everyone for the nearby toll road. They took the dollar or two in change, a couple of cassettes (it was the early 90's) and Joan's trenchcoat -- the cassettes and trenchcoat were found lying on the street about 1 house away. Not their music, not their style, I guess. Phil Collins, anyone? |
My car was also recently "broken into" in the same way as Ron's. We were in and out of the house as we were putting the cabinets from Ikea together. in and out we were, my car was parked on the other side of the street and they got in, went through my glove box, left CD's some dollar bills and took Lee's bowling bag that he kept his check book in???? We cancelled the account and Lee pulled out an old bowling ball and bag, but his new bowling shoes were in that bag, darn.... why would he keep a check book in a bowling bag? you will have to ask him. I see he has new place for his new (new checking account) check book and it's not near his bowling bag... thankfully This on top of my ID theft two weeks prior... and all the other bad karma we suffered...
I will have good thoughts about all my fellow humans, I will think kind things of my fellow humans..., ooooop's my new mantra...... working on the good karma thing. Sure hope it works it's magic.... |
OMG! This is so scary and I'm so sorry this happened to you. How awful! Glad Lizzie scared them away. |
deb, here is just another small step you should take....you must remember what other cards were in your wallet..ie: blockbuster ect..
when my purse was stolen, they didnt use the credit cards BUT they did go to blockbuster, ''rent'' several movies, vcr and ninentendo....when they were due, i got the call....so just make sure that you cancel or notify EVERYONE that had a card from you. xo |
