My husband and I are in a process of making a huge transition soon but first we want to know where is the best place to live in Philadelphia (or outside)? We want to buy a place rather than renting and since Philly is such a big city - we're worried that spending a weekend there to find a place isnt enough time.... soooooooo... we're asking you guys for some ideas to narrow down some areas. We love Brownstones or a house that will give us a rowhouse feel. So far we like the Rittenhouse square area and the Washington Square area but we dont know much about the area... is it safe to live? We're guessing that most houses doesnt come with a backyard so being nearby to a green area is a must for our sheepies. any ideas? How about outside of Philadelphia - any area worth mentioning? Oh does anyone know how long it takes from the center city to newark, delaware by train? I know it's about a hour by car- but ive never taken the train. any recommendations? i know this is not sheepie related so thanks for bearing with me:) Thanks lore |

| Having lived there two years, I would say Philly is not very safe. I lived right near Rittenhouse. It is beautiful but you really have to be careful at all times, especially about mugging. I say this having lived in Washington DC for 10 years. DC was safer.
If you choose to live closer to Fitler Sq, you would be in walking distance to the train station and also a pretty decent dogpark and great restaurants too. There is also a great walking path along the river. Hi, Glad to hear that I'll have another sheepdog pal since Val moved away!!! 
We live in a great little river town in NJ, 15 minute drive to center city with no traffic. There is a light rail train that runs through our town that will get you to the city if you don't want to take your car in. Oops, just read that you will be commuting to Newark. That is where my husband works. Not sure if there is a direct train service to Newark though... You may want to look into a place in Wilmington, DE. Not too far of a drive to Center City Philly and lots of quaint neighborhoods. Please PM me if you would like more info on the area...  |
