Quote: I asked my vet about the hips the other day and she told me they can take Prelim x-rays at 6 months. The final x-rays are taken at age 2 and if those are good you can be reasonably certain your dog will not have hip displasia. Then your dog can be called OFC certified. You may want to check to see if the parents where certified.
My question is, we have a rescue dog with no past history, although I don't need to get her certified, would it still be useful to get some x-rays at about age 2, even though we don't have any at 6-months? We think she is about 2 and I would like to know if we could potentially have a problem.... She doesn't have any issues, but I just got a bug in my head and am curious. Thanks in advance! |

You don't need a premlim x-ray for comparison or anything like that. You can x-ray her at any time and even though she is a rescue dog your vet can still send her x-rays to OFA and for a relatively modest fee (comparatively) you get the collective opinion of three radiologists who have seen (one presumes) more OES hip x-rays than most.
CHD can show up after 24 mos of age by the way. But usually mild, often unilateral, generally not dehabilitating. Is it still genetic? Hm. Probably on some level. Anyway, by all means, go ahead and have her x-rayed if you want to put your mind to rest. But try to find a vet who does lots of OFA x-rays without putting dogs under. Having almost lost one of my girls during routine OFA x-rays, I won't put any of them under anymore and there a number of vets who are very good at getting good radiographs without having to do so. We usually only x-ray rescue dogs if we're suspicious that there may be a problem. We had two last year who were moderately dysplastic, one unlilateral, both under the age of one. In more severe cases you usually have some clue that all is not well in the world and usually at a younger age. Kristine |
Thanks Kristine! I will keep that in mind and ask the next time we venture off to the place that Maggie licks the walls.
The vet mentioned that he didn't notice anything that would indicate HP when we first got her and had "all her parts" checked...and pretty much in his words, "and that is something we will have to keep an eye on, as it is common in OES." So I am pretty confident in our vet. I just don't want to "be that mommy." |
I've had all my dogs tested just for piece of mind. I'm actually behind on getting Bear done-- coincidentally, I made the appointment yesterday! |
