American Temperament Test Society (ATTS)

Has anyone heard of this?

Here is their website:

http://www.atts.org/index.html

I was looking for information on this and there is a test coming up in our area. But one aspect of the test concerns me and I am not sure that too many dogs would pass this:

Reaction to Auditory Stimuli
Objective: To measure the dog's reaction to auditory stimuli and the dog's investigative behavior.

Subtest 4: Gunshots
The handler stops at a designated marker with his/her back towards a well hidden assistant. The assistant fires three shots using a .22 caliber starter pistol (SHOT-PAUSE-SHOT-SHOT).
The purpose of this subtest is to measure the dog's recovery response to a sudden noise.

Harry is afraid of loud noises like fireworks but takes his cue from me. But according to the website:

The handler is not allowed to talk to the dog, give commands, or give corrections. Failure on any part of the test is recognized when a dog shows: unprovoked aggression, panic without recovery or strong avoidance.

I just wanted some input before I delve too far into this. Thanks.

I read that 84% (I think ) of OES fail these types of temperment tests. they tend to be too busy and bouncy.
According to their statistics page, through 2007, only 78% of OES have passed - that is 35 out of 45 tested. I am thinking it is the noise - too skittish.

There is a test scheduled in my area on October 18th.

Can I ask why you are considering it? I would be afraid if they failed there could be insurance issues down the line

It is something I stumbled upon on the Dog Scout website and I thought that Harry would probably be able to pass it (except for the previous noted issue) since he passed his CGC and his therapy dog evaluation and test. I had never heard of it before today. It is something I am kicking around now.

I doubt it would affect our insurance if he failed since he works as a therapy dog, etc. Plus they would not know if he passed or failed.
See I am so cynical I would be afraid that it was recorded soemwhere and somewhere down the line some insurance issue might come up and they would balk becasue you knew you had a "dangerous" dog.

Hey I work in government what do you want from me- I don't trust anything

Yes but do you work for the DMV or Voter Registration because then they can't find anything on you when you want them to.

Tonks and Luna do just fine with things like Thunder and Lightening, and fireworks. Trains can rumble by, and they are un-phased. But I think three gunshots at close range like that would probably startle them. It would startle me!
I went to a mounted police event where they did this in a test all the Baltimore horses just stood there.......the canadian horses just about losttheir minds. Guess here in Baltimore we have a lot of bullets flying

If i can respond to this without being a member. My Standard Poodle took this test today and passed. They said each dog would be judged on this by their own breed standard. The gun shots weren't so bad, it was behind a blind with nothing else moving. My dog startled but quickly adjusted. They look at recovery time, not weather they panic or not.
It's expected that they have a reaction.
I have fired many a 22 in my life and if the test is outside the noise level will be minimal as compared to a large caliber or a shotgun. If indoors there will be a noticable difference, but outside a 22 makes a sound less than your average firecracker. Of course a lot depends on how close to the dog the gun is fired.
