training. Our next option is to try clicker training. If you have used clicker training, have you found it effective for your OES? Would appreciate you sharing your experiences with this training method... (We have a 9 month old OES) |

I love clicker training along with positive reinforcement, it gives you some time to get the food into his/her mouth while being able to tell the dog exactly when it has done what you want. Henry and I used it exclusively for quite a while and I also used a verbal cue. The trainer recommended anything but "good dog" just because they hear that too often. I have switched to just using the verbal cue (after months of clicker use) and it still works, but the clicker was great when I was learning how to train the dog -- never forget, training is about getting YOU trained to give your dog the right commands. My trainer said something I will never forget: Henry knows how to walk quietly, to be quiet and not to jump. The training is for YOU to tell him that it is time to do those things. Good luck and let us know how things are working out for you. |
Thank you to Henry's mom for the encouraging words on clicker
training... Our OES is eager to learn and has 1000 watts of energy ! The method is new to us, but friends have had wonderful success training horses with this technique. It sounds like Henry enjoyed learning, and it was fun too! We will update you on our progress.... |
I haven't used Clicker training - but know of several who have with success. I use something similar with Sydney - but because she is deaf - the clicker isn't useful - so instead of a "click" - I give her "Thumbs Up". She's not an obedience genious by any means - but that's more MY fault not hers! Consistency is the key - and something I am ashamed to admit I lack!
Good Luck! Kristen, Presley & Sydney |
I have a clicker and tried clicker training many years ago, I don't like it, to me it makes no sense... but it does work for many people.... the whole pavlov theory... I thought about trying it with Dancer since she is not a food motivated dog.... but didn't end up bothering with it, since Dancer responds so well to a simple good girl or a pat.... |
I continue to use this clicker w/Abigail and it has worked for me. I use it when I'm cooking in the kitchen and I don't want her to come in. I click it and tell her to stay and lay. When she obeys I always give her a treat, when she comes up again I tell her the same thing and give her a treat. She's getting use to not getting up and her reward is treats. |
Clicker training is really cool- I am rarely impressed by this kind of thing - and I was/ and still am- give it a real good try- you may get amazing results.
Careful though- everytime I open a can of soda (clicking noise) she either comes running or if she is right at hand she immediately sits and looks at me for a treat (! ) What a good girl. Up. |
Thank you to everyone for your support and comments on
clicker training. We have started our training and it is going well. Our pup seems to respond to this positive reinforcement training. We sure have a way to go, but have made progress in a short time. For those interested, there is a good discussion on clicker training and theory on this site www.wagntrain.com |
