Though you might like to know that as of this coming wed we will be fostering a 1 year old sheepie abandoned by his owner. If he gets along with our girl Fanfan we might consider adopting him. Having said that, He is very small for a sheepie which lead us to wonder whether he is an undocked sheepie or a beardie (we have only seen pics of beardie so we don't know what they are like in real life). Although this should not affect our love for him but we have no idea what a beardie is like Can anyone give us some idea which is which.... We have just met him and he is very exubrant and friendly at the rescue, our girl was a little "psyched up" as she was rescued for the same shelter so she ignored him somewhat... fingers crossed.... We have lived with Tung Tung our late super Alpha oes and am worrying that the boy might behave similarily..how can one tell whether it is his "puppies" that makes him so bouncy and not his "top dog" personality? We are on one hand excited beyond belief, yet guarded on the other as we a not alpha people at all. thanks for all the help in advance! I will try to upload his pic somehow... |

To be honest he/she is more beardie than sheepie, i have had both breeds and it looks a definate beardie.
A good looking hound non the less so just have fun with him/her the cross between them is very fine so dont be dissapointed, a sheepy and Beardie....its all good, fine breeds and VERY loyal although the beardie tends to be more placid in the first 10 years...lol |
the pic you sent looks EXACTLY like my Merlin (OES) when he was shaved. I can see the white tip of his tail. Isnt that an OES trait? I do know that no matter what their body coloring all OES if the tail is not docked will have a white tip. I'm not sure about beardie tails, having only seen a beardie in pics and never in real life.
Just my .02, best of luck anyway, he looks like a beautiful dog! |
Looks like an OES to me too |
OH my!!! Is he ever CUTE!!! Congratulations to the both of you!!
I really hope it all works out and you may want to check out a recent post in Behavior called "How do you know you have an Alpha?' The only advice I can give you right now is be patient even if there are fights....don't panic..but give them a chance to sort it out. I don't mean you shouldn't let them know that it is not acceptable behavior but don't be quick to think it's not working out if they do get into a fight and want to return him thinking it's not working . Give it a while as they may just be trying to establish who is going to be the boss. If his activity level is more than hers so may growl at him to let him know to stop bugging her..perfectly acceptable behavior. We'd do the same thing if suddenly a whirl wind personality came into our homes...probably tell them to calm down and your girl may be doing the same with him. If there are two dogs or a hundred , one will always emerge as the Alpha. It's been my experience that it's usually an older female or one that was in the household the longest. Your girl may put him in his place even tho you mentioned in other post she's very passive. It's her house and he's the guest is the way she may look at it. Just don't feed them side by side place as this may definately be a trigger. I often wondered if Shaggy had Beardie in her due to her small size but dog experts told me often that was not the case. I think it's something to do with their hair? I can't remember why exactly but the personalities are so similar that it's so hard to tell. He definately looks like a keeper allright! I really hope it works out for you guys and please keep us posted as to how it's working out. Marianne and the boys Panda sends extra sloppy kisses your way! |
One way you may be able to tell the difference ....
OES apparantly have much longer tails (when they aren't docked) than a Beardie (that's what I've been told). Check out the Bearded Collie Club of America website http://beardie.net/bcca/ - they have a great page of pictures of "Beardies" for shelters to identify (under Rescue). I would go with Beardie on this one - particularly because of the coloring/markings (the "mask") and the color of her eyes (they appear to be very gray / matching her coat). Either way - I'm sure you'll be thrilled! She's adorable - good luck! Kristen |
Dear all,
Thank you all for your response. I am 99.9% convinced that he is a beardie, Elby is 60% convinced... Thanks again and will let you guys know once he's over... |
Even if it's a mix....they are fun too! I love my "somewhat" OES!! |
Tony came home yesterday! Will write more soon but things are summat chaotic right now as he has a bad case of jelly botty
Boy is he HYPER! industrial strength espresso runs in his veins! We walked for 2 hours and ran/played for another 30 mins, and by the time he's home he rested for 5 mins and is begging for more!!!!! He makes everybody dizzy with his muhammad ali fancy footwork! Fan Fan and Tony are still acclimatising to one another, Fan Fan is definitely not sure what to make of Tony's vocalisations during play -- during regular play, most of her friends vocalises only to intiate or stop playing, not during it, so she thinks that tony can't make up his mind on whether to play or not, she would walk away exasperated...poor sweetie.... Tony is definitely not used to other dogs, we think that he was raised alone and not really socialised. He will be desexed this weekend and the vet recommend that he should also be given a shot of testorstrone suppressant as he is "one randy dog" and one who only humps people not dogs! thnaks for all your help and encouragments, will keep y'all posted |
