My husband and I have decided that we want an old english sheepdog. BUT we do not know if we should get a dog or a bitch? My husband is in the Navy, and is due to go away to sea for 6months. Can you lovely people give me any advice and wise wisdom please? Many thanks |

A dog or a b?
Generally, people don't go out and buy *******. You run into enough of them in a day. Why torture yourself by bringing one home? You're better off finding one at the bar, and then tossing it out the next morning. A dog is man's best friend. Why would you have to think twice about this decision? ...esp. if you're considering an OES as the breed. Welcome to the board. I'm sure this will be deleted, but that was too hard to resist P.S. If I were to get one all over again, I'd get a male. My husband would get a female, which is what we currently have. He loves her in every way. |
there is another thread about this going on as well I wish I knew how to link to it from here..... |

I think you mean a male or female. A bitch is a dog, of the female persuasion. You will get alot of differing opinions on this. I prefer males. But a dogs personality is determined by far more than just sex. So, I say go with a pup you fall in love with from a reputable breeder and don't worry about sex. Unless you plan to show you will most likely nueter anyway. |
i love my independant and fiesty female! i have no seperation issues with her and she still a loving cuddle bunny (when SHE wants to).... |
Ive had both and love each. Each dog is so different.....no matter the sex. I agree, go with the pup you love and forget the sex. Chances are it will be spay/neutered anyway.
Generally, but not always, the girls end up being the boss.......but I've had plenty of boy bosses here. If they are onlies, that is just a single dog, I find the boys are more submissive to upright (us) authority than the girls.........but I've had some wilfull boys too. I guess the only way I'd make a decision is are you willing to have lawn spots or burned shrubs? Girls destroy the lawn, boys burn the shrubs. |
The original poster was correct.
Dog= male canine Bitch= female canine Dog has just become the generally used collective term for all canines, too. |
I have three females..2 aussies, one oes...I went with females because I didn't want to deal with the "leg lifting". If you aren't paticular, I would advise you to meet the pups and decide which one would fit into your family.
All three of my girls are wonderful affectionate pets. |

Either are great, bitches seem to be smarter dogs remedial to a degree but ever so sweet.
Bitches not so much equipment underneath to groom and keep clean, dainty little squat to pee, dogs, plenty of plumbing to work your way around and have a habit of peeing on their front legs till they learn to lift that darn back leg. Personality should be more important as to what best suits your family and lifestyle. |
My male is so loving and huggable and kissable. He is so laid back and has pretty much been since he was a pup. His personality is so different from our Sophie. She is well how do I put it. A HOLY TERROR!!! My dad says she is a typical female (and he was comparing her to me and my mom) SHe doesnt take any crap from the other dogs. We have said we've named her wrong. Her name should be TAZ. She whirls around here and you feel a tornado has hit the house. She gets the other two all stirred up.
That being said, I dont think being male of female has anything to do with my pups. I think it is all in their personality. SO I tell my dad he is oh so wrong. I think you should meet the pups and decide for yourself and judge by their personality traits. Meet both parents if you can. |
I'm kinda surprised that not everyone knew that term!
You guys must have really cracked up when they announced "Winner's Bitch" at the dog shows! |
