Walking into things....

I was walking Maggie at 5:45 am 2 days ago, and although it was dark, I would have to say it wasn't anything different then walking at 10 PM. So when Maggie rammed her head into the light pole (and it sounded like someone flicked a hollow coconut....no lie!) I was a little concerned, but maybe she was just still a little sleepy. Then yesterday when I got home, Josh told me that she rammed her head into the baseball scoreboard earlier that afternoon. I had a worried look on my face and he laughed and said, "Look at her! Wouldn't you run into things if you had all that hair covering your eyes?!" Needless to say, I trimmed her face this morning before we left for a walk and we had a no-head-ramming walk!

I know, boring post, but I am bored at work and thought I would occupy.

Same thing at our house, except we need to pull it up, not cut it.
Chewie has run into open car doors, the hose reel, and the 1000 gallon LP tank!!
Marley is blind as a bat (without sonar) with her hair down. I think breeding for coat is getting a little out of hand when the dog stops where ever she thinks there might be an obstacle (or there ever was one) and then walks into the car when her hair is down! We are pulling it up when we go out - but at home she is forever pulling the elastics out and walking into things
Violet, even with her hair out of her eyes has run into many things. I think sometimes she forgets to put on the breaks. :D
Luna walked into the back of a parked car recently, and Tonks into a fence post. Their hair is still a bit too short to do a top knot, and Adam didn't want me to cut it. So I bought some thinning shears and trimmed out a decent amount. It now hangs in their faces, but they can see through better.
Sami has hit parked car, she droped rolled and snared. Blue just runs inti us or bulldozed over my moms schanuzers. And we wonder why one of the dogs are scared of him.
So next time at Westminster dog show when the question of all the hair in their eyes affecting their ability to see and David says, "No, they are far sighted" we can throw our popcorn at the tele and scream, "You are an idiot!"

Of course the hair obscures the vision. Either trim the hair or pull it back. Put it down for pictures, but otherwise let your poor friend see. The consequences can be awful......like poking out their eye! I had one damage an eye and lost sight in it because he couldn't see an obstruction.
Top knot, slide clip or cut it off, they do need to see, those alternatives or a white cane for them

What? This isn't already part of your annual ritual???

With Mace in showcoat I even need to tie up parts of her beard or it flies up as she's running/jumping/training for agility and can obstruct her vision that way. That's a first for me.

Co-breeder saw her at a sheepdog picnic today and complimented me on the condition of her coat (ALSO a first for me   ) I'm thinking maybe I'm doing too good a job. 8O

No kidding. How can anyone say these dogs can see with their hair in their eyes? I love the look, so Nigel has a top knot 24/7. Bella I keep shorter because I can't handle two in coat, and she has that really wavy English coat which always looks clumpy. She looks much nicer at around 2". She is also adamant about no rubber bands on her head...she hates them!
