my 10 year old OES is starting to hang his head and also isn't barking. He ate his dinner ok and took a treat ok, but usually he barks when this happens.

Does anyone think this is just old age setting in. I am worried and of course my vet isn't in tonight.

Wondering if he might be in pain.
Can you speak with the vet on-call?

I hope he'll be back to normal soon.
Is there a "head tilt"?
Leaning to one side could be Vertigo(basically inner ear
problems.)
A 10 y/o OES probably has something going on other than age to
cause what you are describing.
Are there any other issues?
If he is in pain that would certainly explain the reluctance in
his normal behaviour.
I would call the vet first thing in the morning if you can't reach an
emergency vet.
Good Luck!
thanks,

if he isn't any different in the morning am definitely calling the vet

will let you know what happens
I'd check the ears first.

Our Portage will walk with his head lower when he's in pain. He had been doing it for a few weeks (seemed okay otherwise) when our vet put him on a mild pain med, tramadol (sp?) Within a day or two he was back to his old self. He's almost eleven years old now.

He's on a low dose of metacam for inflamation, but it seems he has a little pain/stiffness. With both meds he's back to romping around the house.

Yesterday the head was back down and I checked his ears. One was really red and sore. I've treated it with panalog (we always have some on hand) and he'll probably be better by his morning walk today.

Good luck.

Definitely see your vet as soon as you can.
Gus is much better today. His head is up and his is back to barking. I think with the rain and dampness we had yesterday, it must have been pain.

Of course my vet isn't in today, so will call him tomorrow and see if they can give him something new for the pain.

Thanks for all answers, they helped keep me sane.

Glad to hear Gus is feeling better today....
dampness can sure make those joints
ache!
Paige would hang her head and sorta limp, favoring one front leg. She had a "pinched nerve" or some other neck issue that flared up from time to time. She was in such pain! (but so stoic, no whimpering) I'd massage the neck and shoulder and would ever so carefully try to stretch the neck a bit. She'd even let me use a power massager on her. After a good massage or two and sleep, she'd usually be fine the next day.

Could be the old guy is getting a touch of arthritis in the neck or shoulder area.
I agree, I think Gus is getting arthritis in the neck and shoulders, causing a limp in the leg when it is damp out.

will ask the vet for something stronger to help when those days happen.

thanks for all the advice and for keeping Gus in your prayers.

He is much better!!!!!!!
