tumors in lymph notes elevation of the trachea

This problem with my sheepdog Alex has been going on for approx. the last month. at first they thought he had a bacterial infection or upper respiratory infection. He was put on an antibiotic which didn't help. I took him in for x-rays last Monday and they found 2 nodules enlargements ventral to trachea. I was told that this was the reason that Alex continues to vomit mostly water right after he drinks. He has been choking, coughing and gagging which makes him vomit. I'm concern, of course, that he will develop kidney problems as well as dehydration if this continues.I started him on Prednisone last Monday to shrink the tumors in hopes that this would help him to be able to keep water down and comfort him. There suspicious of cancer.I haven't made any decisions as of yet and I'm hoping for some feed back maybe some one has experienced this before. Tomorrow will be day 7 on the prednisone which he takes 40 mg twice a day and I'm really not seeing a good response that we had hoped for.I have always gave Alex refrigerated water which now he only gets room temperature water.

when I worked with an internal medicine specialist at my last day practice we saw a lot of cancer. Yes lymph nodes can indicate cancer and especially if they arent responsive to antibiotics. The prednisone could help decrease their size but they wont go away. If they arent decreasing in size the next step will probably be an ultrasound of your pets abdomen to see if other internal lmph nodes are affected as well and to see if there are any masses in there. If that reveals nothing then an endoscopy of the upper and lower GI tract may be needed and from there they may be able to determine if it is cancer and what type. If it is lymphoma, the most common kind, then you knwo what it is at least. there are many treatment protocols for cancer theses days and most dogs respond to them very well and can live for years afterwards. I highly recommend looking into diagnostics. Treatment will be frequent, at least once a week for several weeks and then it tapers down depending on your pets responce to the protocol. If you opt not to treat and just want to keep him comfortable, there are other medications that may work better than prednosole. I recommoned at least having a consult and ultrasound with an internist. your regular vet can refer you to one in your area. good luck and I hope this helps a little
