does anyone have kids in college?

I have a question for those of you that do. I just found out from my daughter that she cant register for next semester's classes because the government hasnt released the standford loan monies yet. Are any of your kids having the same problems and what's going to happen. I just found out today and cant call anyone. THis has me very worried. She was told it had something to do with the whole bail out issue. AND to top it off, last year she needed a loan to cover what Stanford didnt and now that bank went belly up. What a mess. I'm worried she wont be able to finish her last two years of college  :x  This economy really sucks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

my part time assistant is having the same problems......i dont know what she found out.....
Have your daughter talk to the busar's office on Monday. She won't be the only one asking for help, so understand if it takes some time.

Have her email her advisor for any recommendations on what to do.

Worse case, she will have to drop out for a year and work to earn money to continue. Sh won't be the only one. Our local community college has a computer program that lets you know if the class you take there is accepted at any college and what it is considered equivalant to at the college. So she may be able to take a couple of classes at the college while saving money.

Many kids are taking more than four years to graduate. My oldest took 6 years to get his bachelors - while getting an associate degree in auto mechanics and working fulltime. He is working on his MBA now.
The middle child took 5 1/2 years to get a double major - the school messed up on what classes he had to have and it cost him an extra semester.
The youngest just got her bachelors last May, but is on her second year of grad school. They offered an option of the first year of PT school counting toward the senior year of college by taking some extra classes.
I can't wait for May 2010 when the oldest and youngest finish.

Just a word to the wise, only use something like that to get an idea of what's available. Always, always check with the school that you plan to transfer to confirm or to find out if there are any plans for changes in the department that may change requirements. I work at a university and I'd be rich if I had a nickel every time I heard a student say "They said it would transfer!"

My sister is actually a financial aid officer at the same university I work at so I'll try to see if she knows any insider tips. (I just tried calling her but she wasn't available.)
Thanks for your help. Any advice would be welcomed. I really dislike finding out something on a saturday and not being able to call until monday. It makes for a horrible weekend.
I suspect she is one of many thousands in the same boat. The colleges are going to have to make allowances for this.....or they should.....  What am I saying, since when did university policies make sense?
Financial aid issues arfe a college students biggest nightmare. My daughter is finally finished after 5 years and my son was in school the 5 years before that so I have had 10 nonstop years of dealing with this. I can't even count the mumber of times that loans and aid threw a monkey wrench into things.

You need to talk to the college and stay on top, usually it works out. There were some semesters when late, last nimute registration prevented my kids from getting the exact class or schedule they wanted but it usually works out.

Just heard on the news last night that it's going to get harder and harder to navigate the maze of financial aid and loans and that students are more frequently needing to take 5 or 6 years to get through college.

I'm glad I am at the end of it.

Very true. Our Community College is exceptional in updating the program every semester.
But my older son switched universities due to a health issue. He listened to the counselor at UTD on what classes would transfer in, figured out what classes he needed to basically repeat and started classes. Four weeks into the semester, after the add/drop period, the counselor told him that they made a mistake and the classes should have counted. So we were out 16 hours of classes and he was out the time and effort.
Even getting it in writing from the counselor does nothing to protect you. My younger son got the list of classes he needed to take his final semester and had the counselor sign off on it. It was not correct and meant he graduated 7 months late since the class wasn't offered in the summer.
My daughter is still waiting (5 weeks into school) for her scholarship money to come thru. We are uncertain what will be happening in the near future. Hopefully she can continue on to achieve her dream job, but I'm not so sure anymore.

I know how you feel.. I thought we had "all our ducks in a row" but its not so. On a side note, I heard that because there is such a nursing shortage, the government is trying to pass a law to make it easier for foriegn nurses to come into the country. Sorry if this sounds horrible but why not help the people here trying to get financing etc and educate them. There are a lot of people trying ot get into nursing schools but it is made more and more difficult for them each and every year. Ok Off my soap box now.

I can only speak for our university, but our nursing program is limited in its spaces for students because they're having a hard time getting nurses to teach. Our nursing liaison said that this is a growing problem in schools. Nursing faculty make less than a nurse will working in the field so the draw isn't there. Class sizes can only be so big. We have a huge waiting list to get in the program. Some nurses also teach in our medical school and, again, med school can afford to may them more money so some end up educating potential doctors rather than nurses.
The university that I attended now has a class of 300, three times the size of my graduating class.

Very true, and you find out the hard way. That happened to Brendan when he went to MI State and took summer classes at Oakland, not one credit transferred . He didn't even know until the end of the following semester when he finally got his transcripts.
